Influence of Changes in Hot Water Consumption on the DHS Development
Z. Budjko, V. Zēbergs
Latvian Journal of Physics and Technical Sciences , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10047-011-0018-5
Abstract: The methodology proposed in the paper is based on the concept of Energy Efficiency Uninterrupted Development Cycle (EEUDC). The goal of the authors was to clarify how the district heating system (DHS) development is affected by the heat consumption. The primary emphasis was given to the hot water consumption, with its noticeable daily fluctuations as well as changes caused by those in the inhabitants' way of life. The methodology, which is in good agreement with the ideology of advanced management of DHS development, employs the ISO 14000 series of standards (widely applied in the sphere of environment management). In the work, experimental results are presented that have been obtained through monitoring the hot water consumption. The results evidence that this consumption and its usage indices correspond to the level achieved by Western (in particular, North-European) countries. This circumstance changes considerably the input data for calculation of DHS elements, making it possible to work out appropriate measures in order to improve the DHS efficiency through step-by-step replacement of the elements with high energy loss.
Evaluaciones económicas en salud: Conceptos básicos y clasificación
Revista médica de Chile , 2010, DOI: 10.4067/S0034-98872010001000007
Abstract: the growing burden of healthcare costs has created an urgent need to econo-mically appraise health interventions in order to prioritise those which offer better value for money in the local context. the aim of this article is to provide some basic principles of economic evaluations which will improve physicians? understanding of the methodology involved in this type of analysis and will also help to show how their clinical practice relates to the economics of healthcare financing. some of the main concepts describe is this paper include the definition and classification of economic evaluations in healthcare (i.e. cost-minimization, cost-effectiveness, cost-utility and cost-beneft) and a brief description of a cost-effectiveness plane.
Magnetic reconnection associated fluctuations in the deep magnetotail: ARTEMIS results
Z. V r s
Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics (NPG) , 2011,
Abstract: On the basis of ARTEMIS two-probe mission magnetic reconnection (MR) outflow associated magnetic fluctuations and turbulence are analyzed on 19 February 2011. In the deep-tail, at distances between X = 45 – 51 RE, evidence for reconnection associated plasma sheet thinning was found, accompanied by heating of the plasma sheet. Correlated flow and field reversals and the large-scale Hall-effect signatures indicated the presence of the reconnection X-line. Within fast reconnection plasma outflows, magnetic fluctuations exhibit the same spectral scaling features and kinked spectra as magnetic fluctuations in the solar wind or in various parts of geospace. It was shown that the proton scale magnetic fluctuations are constrained by oblique firehose, proton cyclotron and mirror instability thresholds. For parallel plasma β|| > 1, where the thresholds converge, perpendicular magnetic fluctuations are enhanced. Magnetic compressibility decreases with the distance to the neutral sheet, however, near the instability thresholds it is comparable to the values obtained in the solar wind.

ADPCM Using a Second-order Switched Predictor and Adaptive Quantizer
Advances in Electrical and Computer Engineering , 2011, DOI: 10.4316/aece.2011.03010
Abstract: Adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM) with forward gain-adaptive quantizer and second-order switched predictor based on correlation is presented in this article. Predictor consists of a bank of predetermined predictors for each block of speech samples, avoiding the need to solve, or quantize predictor coefficients during the coding process. The adaptation consists of switching to one of this predictors based on the values of the first and second order correlation coefficients. The theoretical model is generalization of the DPCM with the first order switched predictor for an arbitrary prediction order. Experimental results for ADPCM with the second-order four/eight state switched prediction based on correlation are provided.
