Parental Care, Children’s Cognitive Abilities and Economic Growth: The Role of Fathers  [PDF]
Debora Di Gioacchino
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2012.23046
Abstract: Human capital is a key determinant of economic growth. Parents’ involvement during childhood is a predictor of educational attainment later in life. Thus, time devoted by parents to childcare is an important productive activity for society. This paper presents a model in which parental childcare is a key factor in determining children’s cognitive abilities. Parents’ must allocate their time between paid job and childcare. Because of diminishing return, the optimal allocation of parents’ time requires both parents to spend some time in childcare. Since a suboptimal allocation of time has implications both for children's cognitive abilities and for economic growth, our result has important policy implications.
Tax Compliance, Income Distribution and Social Norms  [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2017.73044
Abstract: This paper studies the effect of income inequality on tax evasion. To discuss the topic, we present a simple model, based on Benabouand Tirole [1], that incorporates incentives for tax compliance such as punishment and fines, intrinsic motivation and social norms. Since we consider a regressive system of incentives to comply, income inequality increases the value of tax evasion although overall propensity to comply is unaffected. In this framework, we consider the hypothesis that social norms are group specific as in the case of social segregation or status related networks. We show that all the negative effects of inequalities are amplified: the difference between the tax compliance of the income groups and the value of tax evasion increase.

Diniz, Debora;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2006000800023
Abstract: this paper analyzes a court case involving parents' refusal of life support measures for an 8-month-old infant with spinal muscular atrophy type i, a fatal degenerative genetic disease. the parents filed for a court injunction to ensure that the infant would not be submitted to mechanical ventilation in case of respiratory distress. the brazilian courts recognized the parents' right to refuse life support measures, and the infant died a week after the ruling. the parents' request was to guarantee their right to avoid medical procedures that would not alter the infant's clinical prognosis. the author of this paper was called on to provide expert ethical counsel in this case, and the article is a modified and condensed version of the author's report to the presiding judge.

Diniz, Debora;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1996000300008
Abstract: this study deals with the ethical premises of medical treatment for children with serious cerebral palsy. eight months of ethnographic research were carried out with patients at the cerebral palsy center in the sarah hospital in salvador, bahia, brazil. observation of treatment for these children, who displayed limited clinical change, led to the following question, as suggested by discussions from medical deontology: what is the purpose of medical treatment for children with serious cerebral palsy? the results of our research point to social and humanist explanations going beyond the official medical scientific explanation, which limits treatment to corporal mechanicism.
Autonomia reprodutiva: um estudo de caso sobre a surdez
Diniz, Debora;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2003000100019
Abstract: the ethical principle of reproductive autonomy is one of the cornerstones of bioethical theories. prenatal diagnostic techniques and advances in genetics have broadened the spectrum of possibilities for reproductive choice. consequently, they allow for selection in diagnosed cases of fetal malformation, for instance. this article analyzes the case of deafness, in particular the argument from the deaf community that supports the birth of deaf children as a way of maintaining its cultural identity. the article discusses the community's culturalist argument that deafness should not be considered a disability. furthermore, the article considers the extent to which reproductive decisions by potential parents could limit the development of their future children.
Aborto e inviabilidad fetal: el debate brasile?o
Diniz, Debora;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2005000200032
Abstract: the case against non-compliance with the fundamental principle concerning anencephaly, under review by the brazilian supreme court, is a milestone in the debate on abortion in latin america. since the currently prevailing version of the brazilian penal code was enacted in 1940, there has been fierce resistance to any change in the country's abortion policy. this article discusses the arguments and political strategies used in the anencephaly suit brought before the supreme court, particularly the ethical and legal position that interruption of pregnancy in cases of anencephaly does not constitute abortion, but should be considered a therapeutic anticipation of delivery.

ética na pesquisa em ciências humanas: novos desafios
Diniz,Debora;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232008000200017
Abstract: this paper aims to discuss how already established principles of research ethics can be incorporated to the ethical review of research projects in social sciences, particularly ethnographic studies or studies using the techniques of participant observation and open interviews. the discussion is guided by an analysis of the methodological and ethical procedures used in the production of the ethnographic documentary "severina's story". the analysis of the film shows the urgent need to expand the horizons of the debate around research ethics beyond the biomedical fundaments of this field.
