Abstract: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that affects mainly women, presents several clinical manifestations and has no known exact cause. The skin is one of the organs that can be affected, with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) being one of the classifications according to cutaneous lupus erythematosus lesions. SCLE is commonly found in young to middle age women and carries characteristics related to sun exposure. In this report, there is a rare case of a male and elderly patient that presents SCLE subgroup initially asymptomatic, with subsequent appearance of macular skin lesions and vitiligo appearance. This is an important case to alert health professionals that the disease can manifest itself and open its clinical profile even in patients of sex and unusual ages.

Journal of Applied Oral Science , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-77572009000200012
Abstract: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the masticatory function of subjects with cleft lip and palate by analyzing the bite force developed by these individuals. bite force was evaluated in a group of 27 individuals with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (14 males and 13 females - aged 18-26 years) and compared to the data achieved from a group of 20 noncleft subjects (10 males and 10 females - aged 18-26 years). measurement was achieved on three positions within the dental arch (incisors, right molars and left molars), three times at each position considering the highest value for each one. statistical analysis was performed by anova and mann-whitney test ( α = 5%). there was a significant deficit in bite force in male individuals with cleft lip and palate compared to the male control group (p=0.02, p=0.004, p=0.003 for incisors, right and left molars, respectively). for the female group, the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.79, p=0.06, p=0.47). in the group of individuals with clefts, 92.6% were under orthodontic treatment, which could be a reason for the present findings, since it can decrease the bite force more remarkably in males than in females. in conclusion, the bite force is significantly reduced in men when comparing the cleft group to the noncleft group. in females, this reduction was not significant in the same way. however, the main reason for this reduction and for the different behavior between genders should be further investigated.

Psicologia, Saúde & Doen?as , 2007,
Abstract: having a premature baby interned in a neonatal icu is generally considere d a difficult and unexpected moment for many women. to understand such an experience, the present work attempted to apprehend the social representations of mother hood and fatherhood among mothers with interned premature baby in a neonatal intensive care unit (nicu). semi-structured interviews with seven mothers in a public hospital in state of espírito santo (brazil) were conducted, and then submitted to content analysis. the results indicated the recurrence to traditional models of the parental roles, which contributed to an overburden of responsibility for the mothers. it was, though, observed, that the attempt by some fathers for a closer relation with the child was discouraged by some mothers. this study highlights the need to rescue and understand the psychological universe of the mothers, inserting the fathers in this context, since little is known about how fathers understand and cope this delicate period. the results evidenced also the need for new assistance models, sustained by constant critical reflection by the professionals about their own representation s and practices in this context, in order not to direct care and responsibilities solely to the mothers.

Parental Care, Children’s Cognitive Abilities and Economic Growth: The Role of Fathers  [PDF]
Debora Di Gioacchino
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2012.23046
Abstract: Human capital is a key determinant of economic growth. Parents’ involvement during childhood is a predictor of educational attainment later in life. Thus, time devoted by parents to childcare is an important productive activity for society. This paper presents a model in which parental childcare is a key factor in determining children’s cognitive abilities. Parents’ must allocate their time between paid job and childcare. Because of diminishing return, the optimal allocation of parents’ time requires both parents to spend some time in childcare. Since a suboptimal allocation of time has implications both for children's cognitive abilities and for economic growth, our result has important policy implications.
