Abstract: the degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthrosis affects to 10% of elderlies aged 60. it is mainly characterized by pain in the involved joint, crepitation, morning stiff and a progressive limitation of movement of that joint leading to a partial or total wear of articular cartilage. the treatment of the knee osteoarthrosis is a great challenge. the recent advances in use of regenerative medicine suggest that adult stem cells could represent a promisor alternative in the treatment of this entity. in a female patient aged 61 presenting with knee osteoarthrosis authors placed a percutaneous implant of autologous mononuclear cells mobilized to peripheral blood by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor achieving a fast clinical and radiological improvement. this result suggests that the procedure used is a feasible, simple, safe and less expensive method for treatment of articular degenerative lesions.

A 27 year old woman was given to the emergency department with mild, acute onset of right side abdominal pain. Clinical examination revealed firm masses bilaterally occupying almost the entire abdomen. Because the presence of bilateral angiomyolipomas, subependymal tuberous and adenoma sebaceum of the skin the patient was diagnosed as having a case of tuberous sclerosis . TS is a neurocutaneous disease characterized by hamartomatous changes in the lungs, brain, kidneys, skin, heart and others organs. The diagnostic criteria consisted of a set of major and minor diagnostic features. The imagenology plays a very important role.

Materials Research , 2003,
Abstract: A new hydrothermal route for preparing biphasic calcium phosphate monoliths is proposed. Firstly, a slurry of beta-tricalcium phosphate/ortho-phosphoric acid (b-TCP/H3PO4) is cast into the desired final shape and size to obtain a block composed of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) and b-TCP. This block is then treated in 1.0 M Na2HPO4 at 60 °C in order to hydrolyze the DCPD into Ca10-x(HPO4)x(PO4) 6-x(OH)2-x (CDHA) and Ca8H2(PO4)6 .5H2O (OCP). The result is a monolithic piece which preserves the initial shape and size, but which is composed instead of CDHA, OCP, and b-TCP. During the initial stage, when the pH is slightly alkaline, the product of DCPD hydrolysis is CDHA. However, when a neutral or slightly acidic pH is reached OCP is formed. Test samples processed by this method showed complete conversion of DCPD into CDHA and OCP after 112 h of hydrolysis, and with a compressive strength of 16.2 MPa, similar to cancellous bone.

Abstract: In this work the influence of the sintering environment in the thermal stability of the hydroxyapatite ceramics (HA) reforced with magnesia-partially-stabilized-zirconia (Mg-PSZ) particles is studied. The green bodies were prepared by uniaxial pressing and the sintering as carried out both in air and humid oxygen. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns and infrared spectroscopy spectra showed that the humid environment sintering avoids the decomposition of HA. On the contrary, when the sintering is done in air the calcium zirconate (CZ) appears owing to reaction between the zirconia and calcium oxide released due to transformation of HA. The grain growth in the sintered materials was confirmed by Scanning Electronic Microscopy. The mechanical behavior was studied by indentation methods and the results obtained revealed an increase in the fracture toughness of the materials reinforced with Mg-PSZ respect to HA.

Abstract: the effect of the method of sterilization on the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of a new bone repairing material was studied. the material was obtained by thermal hydrolysis of b-tricalcium phosphate/orthophosphoric acid cement and was composed of calcium deficient hydroxyapatite, octacalcium phosphate (ocp), and b-tricalcium phosphate. partial decomposition of the ocp was observed after sterilization for the three methods. decomposition increased to the following sequence of sterilization methods: ethylene oxide; autoclaving; dry oven. on the other hand, mechanical strength decreased with regard to non sterilized material in the sterilization sequence: ethylene oxide; dry oven; autoclaving. the compressive strength was 8.5 ± 1.0; 9.0 ± 1.2; 8.2 ± 0.8 and 6.5 ± 1.0 mpa, whereas diametral tensile strength was 2.1 ± 0.3; 2.5 ± 0.1; 1.9 ± 0.9 and 1.6 ± 0.3 for the material sterilized by ethylene oxide, dry oven, and autoclaving, respectively. several compositional and microstuctural changes were detected after dry heat and autoclave sterilization. ethylene oxide sterilization had lesser effect on the chemical composition and strength than dry heat and autoclaving.

Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia is a rare cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and Argon Plasma ablation is its current first line treatment. The aim of this paper is to analyze the effectiveness and safety of argon plasma coagulation in the treatment of this syndrome in a sample of patients treated at the National Center for Minimal Access Surgery. We present a retrospective series of cases of 11 patients with female predominance (8 patients) and age range between 28 and 81 years who received APC ablations sessions with subsequent follow up within 12 months. Hepatic cirrhosis predominated among the personal pathological antecedents, anemia was the most common clinical presentation followed by a wide variety of symptoms. The number of sessions with argon fluctuated between one and four for a 2.5 average and with recurrence during the follow up period. There were not major secondary complications to endoscopy therapy.
