Abstract: Aim: The purpose of this study was to understand the mechanism of nicotine mediated addiction and the role of oligoelements in reducing its effect. Methods: Male Wistar rats (weight 80 g) were treated with single and repeated doses of nicotine and/or oligoelements as follows: group 1 (control) NaCl 0.9%; group 2, nicotine (1 mg/kg); group 3, oligoelements (50 μl/rat); and group 4, nicotine (1 mg/kg) + oligoelements (50 μl/rat). All drugs were intraperitoneally administered for 4 days. Blood for the measurement of glucose was obtained from all the animals. Samples of the brain regions (cortex, hemispheres and cerebellum + medulla oblongata) of each rat were obtained and used to measure the concentrations of dopamine, GSH levels, and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) using fluorescence and spectrophotometric methods. Results: Glucose level increased in rats treated with nicotine and oligoelements (p < 0.05), while GSH level decreased in cerebellum/medulla oblongata and hemispheres (p < 0.05) of the same animals. TBARS levels increased in cerebellum/medulla oblongata and hemispheres of animals treated with nicotine and oligoelements, but decreased in the same regions (p < 0.05) in rats treated only with oligoelements. The levels of dopamine decreased in cortex and hemispheres, but increased in cerebellum/medulla and oblongata regions of rats treated with both compounds (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Nicotine and oligoelements are associated with increase in the level of glucose, an effect that was more pronounced in the group treated with both drugs. Reduction of oxidative stress and dopamine metabolism may be involved in this effect.

Abstract: Background: Cardioxane has been probed in patients with advanced malignancies to protect the heart. Selenium, an essential micronutrient exerts varieties of functions such as antioxidant. The aim of this study was to test if cardioxane (CDX) and selenium (Se) have additive antioxidant protective effect on brain and heart, and their relation with dopamine levels. Methods: Thirty-six male Wistar rats divided in groups of 6 animals each, were treated as follows: G1, saline solution 0.9% (control); G2, 100 mg/kg of CDX; G3, 60 μg/kg of Se; G4, 20 mg/kg of 3-nitropropionic acid (3NP); G5, 3NP + CDX and G6, 3NP + Se. 3NP was used as an oxidative stress inducer. Drugs were administered intraperitoneally for 5 days. The animals were sacrificed on the last day of treatment and the brain and heart were extracted and used to measure lipid peroxidation, dopamine, glutathione (GSH), ATPase, calcium, and H2O2. Results: In G2 and G5, dopamine decreased in cortex and striatum while GSH increased in heart, cortex and cerebellum/medulla oblongata. ATPase activity increased in heart and cortex of groups 2, 3, 5 and 6. Lipoperoxidation and H2O2 increased in cortex of animals treated with 3NP. Conclusion: These results suggest that CDX increases antioxidant capacity in the brain and heart while selenium promotes alteration in dopamine metabolism in view of the capacity of 3NP to generate free radicals.
Australian Expatriates: Who Are They?
David Calderón Prada
Coolabah , 2007,
Abstract: Australia is made up of 20 million people and, interestingly enough, overone million of the total population live overseas. Australians living abroadare known as `expatriates′ and they have a particular profile: highlyeducated and better skilled than their counterparts at home. Thus, on theone hand, a general division may be established between expatriates andAustralians living at home; on the other, a particular division betweenexpatriates themselves, which depends on the individual reasons that pushthem to leave Australia. At this point, it is important to outline the generalreasons that lead expatriates to go overseas. To begin with, in terms ofmigration, Australia is both historically and contemporarily linked to othercountries. Secondly, Australia is geographically isolated and, therefore, faraway from the main global markets. Finally, it is quite right to concludethat although the logical assumption of expatriation is distance, expatriatesare mentally, and often emotionally, linked to Australia and, therefore, theunderstanding of their situation is more positive than negative.
?CONQUISTAR INDIOS O EVANGELIZAR ALMAS?: POLíTICAS DE SOMETIMIENTO EN LAS PROVINCIAS DE LAS TIERRAS BAJAS DEL PACíFICO (1560-1680)
Montoya Guzmán,Juan David;
Historia Crítica , 2011,
Abstract: this article analyzes how changes in subjugation policy impacted the different indigenous nations inhabiting the pacific lowlands and under the judicial jurrisdiction of santafe, quito, and panama. in their eagerness to obtain riches, colonial authorities, along with the vecinos (neighbours) of andean urban centers, constructed a series of negative discourses about the indians that legitimized a brutal war lasting almost a century. the failure of this policy in the mid-seventeenth century permited the establishment of a series of missions in this territory that sought to dominate the indigenous population, but now through evangelization, a seemingly "softer" technique. despite the differences between these two policies of subjugation, both sought to include indigenous peoples in part of the colonial economic system.

From graphs to tensegrity structures: Geometric and symbolic approaches
Miguel de Guzmán,David Orden
Mathematics , 2004,
Abstract: A form-finding problem for tensegrity structures is studied; given an abstract graph, we show an algorithm to provide a necessary condition for it to be the underlying graph of a tensegrity in $\mathbb{R}^d$ (typically $d=2,3$) with vertices in general position. Furthermore, for a certain class of graphs our algorithm allows to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the relative position of the vertices in order to underlie a tensegrity, for what we propose both a geometric and a symbolic approach.

Abstract: equations to predict height from several body segments have been developed. however, those that use the knee height are limited by the need of an instrument with high cost (anthropometer). thus, the aim of this study was to develop a prediction equation from the leg length by using a tape measure. leg length and height was measured in 180 subjects, with ages 30-59 years that attended the ambulatorio docente asistencial of the university hospital of caracas, from april to june of 2002. in order to determine the correlation degree of each measurement with height, the existent correlation between height and each one of the studied variables (leg length, sex, age) and between the variables to one each other was calculated by means of the pearson's correlation coefficient. linear regression analysis was done to estimate the height in each gender and the results were tested on an independent sample. the generated equations achieved a very good correlation with the real height and the standard error was calculated. thus, in those subjects in whom assessment of the real height is not possible by conventional means, it is possible to use height prediction equations from simple techniques and equipment accessible to the whole health care staff.

Abstract: in the present study the deposition of pure ni and composites ni + sic nanoparticles coatings is reported. the coatings were deposited on the substrate of carbon steel aisi-sae 1016 through linear polarization on a rotating disk electrode, varying the speed of rotation and the content of sic particles in the bath. the coatings were obtained from a classical type watts solution, which added nanoparticles of sic. the anti-corrosive properties of the coatings were studied using electrochemical and corrosion-erosion tests. the microstructure of the coating was examined by optical microscopy. we found that with increasing numbers of particles in the coating increases the mobility and resistance to corrosion-erosion of the coatings. in the same way the mechanical properties of the coating significantly improve with the increase in the number of particles in the watts solution and with the increase of stirring solution during the electrodeposition processes.

Abstract: Microdeletion 22q11 in humans causes velocardiofacial and DiGeorge syndromes. Most patients share a common 3Mb deletion, but the clinical manifestations are very heterogeneous. Congenital heart disease is present in 50-80% of patients and is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. The phenotypic variability suggests the presence of modifiers. Polymorphisms in the VEGFA gene, coding for the vascular endothelial growth factor A, have been associated with non-syndromic congenital heart disease, as well as with the presence of cardiovascular anomalies in patients with microdeletion 22q11. We evaluated the association of VEGFA polymorphisms c.-2578C>A (rs699947), c.-1154G>A (rs1570360) and c.-634C>G (rs2010963) with congenital heart disease in Chilean patients with microdeletion 22q11. The study was performed using case-control and family-based association designs. We evaluated 122 patients with microdeletion 22q11 and known anatomy of the heart and great vessels, and their parents. Half the patients had congenital heart disease. We obtained no evidence of association by either method of analysis. Our results provide further evidence of the incomplete penetrance of the cardiovascular phenotype of microdeletion 22ql 1, but do not support association between VEGFA promoter polymorphisms and the presence of congenital heart disease in Chilean patients with this syndrome.
