Abstract: The experiment was led for evaluating the quality of white eggs from different places (supermarkets, free markets and poultry farm eggs). A completely randomized design was used with three treatments (commercial places) and five replicates (36 eggs for experimental unit). The studied variables were egg weight, integrity of the shell, albume weight, yolk weight, shell weight, albume % , yolk %, shell%, pH of the yolk and pH of the albume. The obtained data were analyzed by the GLM procedure of the SAS program. White eggs of the day (from the farm) and from supermarkets presented the best results (P <0.05) for egg weight and the worst for dirty eggs percentage. Eggs differed (P <0.05) for most of the quality variables, except pH of the yolk. Eggs from supermarkets and free markets are out of the established quality pattern for the suitable category in the label of the packing. Eggs from poultry farm eggs showed the best quality.

Abstract: a modified method for direct determination of cellulolytic activity using avicel colored with remazol brilliant blue r (rbbr) in agar test tubes is discussed. refinements were introduced in a simple method for quantitation of cellulase activity, based on the release of dye from avicel-rbbr medium by the enzymatic hydrolysis. modifications in avicel-dye preparation were enhanced and a spectrophotometer for direct od measurement in agar test tubes used. the use of a spectrophotometer improved the precision of the collected data, since absorbance measurements could be done at the maximum wavelenght for rbbr (595 nm).

Abstract: Objective: To assess the impact of each measure in the six and 24-hour bundles of a Managed Care Program in the care of a cohort of hospitalized severe sepsis / septic shock patients. Methods: A prospective study was carried out with 316 consecutive patients with severe sepsis / septic shock, assessing the impact on mortality by calculating the Odds Ratio of each single action (significance level of 5%). Rresults: In the sample there were 57% males, the mean age was 65.24 years, the APACHE II score was over 25 in 39.2%; 71.8% had a diagnosis of septic shock, and 65.5% required mechanical ventilation. Furthermore, 88.9% of patients had at least two organ dysfunctions upon the initial presentation. Only the blood culture collected before starting antibiotics: OR = 0.54 (95% CI: 0.33-0.87; p < 0.009) and the introduction of antibiotics by no later than 120 minutes after the diagnosis: OR = 0.44 (95% CI: 0.23-0.87; p < 0.009) were significant. Other six-hour bundle items tended towards a worse outcome. Results were superior in the 24-hour bundles with interventions in all four items, although without statistical significance. Cconclusions: The single impact of all interventions in the bundles occurred due to only two items: collecting blood cultures before starting antibiotics and early use (by 120 minutes) of antibiotics. Future evaluations in larger databases including multivariate analysis may support these findings.

Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Research , 2011,
Abstract: Background: Myoepitheliomas are rare tumours that may generally arise from the minor or major salivary glands. The differential diagnosis of this tumour should be performed along with several benign and malignant soft tissue neoplasms. The present case report describes an asymptomatic mass that arose in the soft palate of 42 year old black woman with duration of the six months. Methods: An incisional biopsy of soft palate lesion was carried out and submitted for histological evaluation under the clinical hypothesis of salivary gland tumour. To confirm the myoepithelial nature of neoplastic cells the immunohistochemical reactions for smooth-muscle actin, cytokeratins and S100 were performed. Results: The histological examination revealed the presence of tumour originating from a minor salivary gland and covered by a stratified squamous oral epithelium. The tumour cells were arranged in order to form a myxoid pattern and, individually, small and/or medium spindle-shaped cells with predominantly round or ovoid nuclei, as well as epithelioid and plasmocytoid cells were noted. The stroma was myxomatous and no ductal or syringomatous epithelial structures were observed. Following the histological and immunohistochemical diagnosis of myoepithelioma, the lesion was surgically removed. After the surgery, a follow-up of one year showed no signs and symptoms of reccurrence. Conclusions: The myoepithelioma should be carefully distinguished from the other soft tissue tumours, especially those arising from salivary glands, such as pleomorphic adenoma and adenoid-cystic carcinoma.

Abstract: this study was conducted to evaluate the tiller population density and its structural characteristics in brachiaria brizantha cv. piata subjected to deferment periods (65, 85 and 105 days) and initial sward heights for deferment (20, 30 and 40 cm). a completely randomized block design was used in a split-plot scheme with three replications. the population density of vegetative basal and total tillers was influenced by the interaction between periods and initial heights of deferment, with lower values in the period of 85 days associated with the initial height of 40 cm and the period of 105 days associated with initial heights of 30 and 40 cm. the length of the stem and leaf blade of vegetative basal tillers increased with the raise in the deferment periods. initial deferring heights had little effect on the structural characteristics of the tillers. the concomitant use of tall plants and long deferring periods reduces tillering of piata palisade grass. to optimize the tillering and structure of the deferred pasture in the region of vi?osa, piata palisade grass should be deferred with an initial height from 20 to 40 cm in early may and remain deferred for 65 days.

Abstract: aniba rosaeodora is an amazonian tree species that belongs to the family lauraceae. due to intense exploitation for extraction of essential oils (mainly linalol), a. rosaeodora is now considered an endangered species. on the other hand, there is little information about its ecophysiology which would be useful to support future forest planting programs. hence, the effect of different light intensities on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of young plants of a. rosaeodora was studied. nine-month-old plants were subjected to four light treatments (t1= 10 a 250 μmol.m-2.s-1 / control; t2=500 to 800, t3=700 to 1000 and t4=1300 to 1800 μmol.m-2.s-1 / full sunlight). allometric variables, gas exchange, contents of pigments and chlorophyll a fluorescence were analysed. as to the relative growth rates, it was found that plants of a. rosaeodora showed higher biomass accumulation when grown under intermediary irradiance conditions (t2). the best photosynthetic performance was achieved under conditions of t3. when growth was correlated with photosynthesis, it was found that plants under treatments t2 and t3 presented better responses in comparison with the lowest (t1) and highest (t4) light extremes. the highest pigment contents were obtained for plants in the shade (t1) and the lowest for those exposed to full sunlight (t4). the photochemical efficiency of photosystem ii (fv/fm) was found that only plants in the shade treatment (t1) presented no stress from high irradiance. these findings suggest that both treatments (t1 and t4) altered the function of the a. rosaeodora plants, inhibiting photosynthesis and growth. plants of a. rosaeodora developed photo-protection mechanisms under full sunlight. however, the species presented better photosynthetic response and biomass gain under intermediary irradiance conditions, displaying relative physiological plasticity, during the seedling phase.
