Soy Consumption and Obesity  [PDF]
Dante Roccisano, Maciej Henneberg
Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2012.32038
Abstract: Obesity is now present worldwide, including China, India and developing countries. It now seems no longer acceptable to argue that obesity can simply be explained in terms of caloric consumption only using simple concept of energy in and energy out. There may be specific causes of altered metabolism that produce nutritional imbalances. Individual variation in response to food intake may also be considered. Specific substances in the food chain can influence meta-bolism towards an increase in fat deposits. Xenoestrogens have been suggested to have such an influence. Soy contains phytoestrogens plus phytates, protease inhibitors and other anti-nutrients which block or compromise the body’s uptake of essential vitamins and minerals. This may contribute to nutritional anomalies. We analyzed data from WHO and FAO for 167 countries. These contained percentage of obese individuals (BMI > 30 kg/m2), GDP, caloric consump-tion per capita, and sugar and soy consumption per capita. Regressions and partial correlations were used. Soy con-sumption correlates significantly with levels of obesity, irrespective of GDP and caloric intake. For instance, poor Latin America with soy consumption of 28.9 kg/person/year has more obesity (18.4%) than better off European Union (14.1%) consuming 16.1 kg/person/year of soy. Soy consumption seems to contribute approximately 10% - 21% to the worldwide variation in obesity, depending on the method of statistical analysis. The ubiquitous presence of unfermented soy products in mass produced foods seems to be an important contributor to the obesity epidemic.
Ramaglia,Dante;
Abstract: the perspectives provided by the recognition theory to understand the transformations that have been happening in contemporary societies, have swiftly turned into a focus of discussion in social and political philosophy. especially there are examined some theoretical proposals which depart from the consideration of the anthropological sense of recognition, and its reinterpretation from the definition that it has in modern culture, in philosophers like rousseau and hegel, in order to give different keys of interpreting those social change processes which have been taking place till the present. one of the analyzed options is associated with the frankfurtian philosopher axel honneth, who has developed a set of thesis about the importance of mutual recognition in relation to the dynamics that mobilize social conflicts. besides the need to contrast this with other contemporary approaches, they are also reviewed some assumptions and scopes of the theory of recognition from a critical perspective that is contextualized within the framework of the transformations produced by globalization and the ongoing crisis of capitalist societies. from this point of view, it is interesting to inquire into the significance of alternative manifestations of social movements in their new forms of protest and claim of justice. in this respect, some guidelines concerning the policies of recognition are tested, as this discussion involves an evaluation of equality and difference as normative and guiding principles of the material and cultural changes occurring in today's world.
Klocker,Dante;
T?3picos , 2007,
Abstract: the progressive publication -along the past two decades- of the courses taught by heidegger in his first years in teaching has allowed the reconstruction of the process of creation of being and time (1927), its multiple textual references and influences. among these, st. augustine's thought bears a prominent place, for which reason i intend to consider its noticeable presence in some of the key concepts in the work mentioned. the first to be considered is sorge (concern, care), with which heidegger characterises the fundamental ontological constitution of human existence. his first drafts emerged from the reflection upon the famous "inquietum cor nostrum" and the cura (care) for the vita beata from confessions x. based on this same text heidegger had offered a phenomenological interpretation of temptation, which constitutes one of the first elaborations of the so-called "fall", precisely one of the structural moments of the sorge. explicit references or suggestive analogies between both thinkers can also be appreciated between the explanation of "tempus" as "distentio animi" in confessions xi and the heideggerian thesis of "temporality" as the basis of the constitution of human subjectivity; the road from the search of god to the exploration of the interiority of the one who looks for him and the way back from the question about the "being" to the question about the one who understands the "being", in other no less significant cases.
As duas grandes vertentes da história sociolingüística do Brasil (1500-2000)

Abstract: this article presents a characterization of brazilian sociolinguistic reality as polarized between the cultured norm and the popular, or vernacular one. the first is defined in terms of speech patterns of the middle and upper classes, the later is a composite of lower class speech patterns. the portuguese language history of brazil is, thus, viewed from the point of these two extremes, taking into consideration the changes that occurred in both norms beginning in the last century and which reflect the deep and far-reaching transformations in the socio-economic environment during this period. this characterization is an attempt to reach a better understanding of irregular linguistic transmission that had significant impact on the history of popular brazilian portuguese.
The progressive publication -along the past two decades- of the courses taught by Heidegger in his first years in teaching has allowed the reconstruction of the process of creation of Being and Time (1927), its multiple textual references and influences. Stellar Populations in Galaxies: Progress on The Milky Way, on Dwarf Irregulars, and on Elliptical Galaxies
Dante Minniti
Revista mexicana de astronomía y astrofísica , 2001,
Abstract: I discuss specific topics of stellar populations where major progress is occurring. Large surveys like the MACHO Project are contributing to our understanding of the inner structure of our Galaxy. Towards these inner regions , different components (bulge, inner halo, and inner thin and thick disks) overlap. We can learn much about these stellar populations using the MACHO database. We expect major progress in the study of the outer Milky Way halo in following years from the SDSS database. Very distant BHB stars located in the outskirts of the halo would be identified. I also describe recent observations of nearby dwarf irregular galaxies, and discuss what they tell us about their stellar content, and about the way these galaxies form. It is now possible to construct deep luminosity functions and color-magnitude diagrams for galaxies beyond the Local Group. I finally review recent work on the resolved stellar populations of the giant early type galaxy NGC~5128.
