Abstract: This research involves the study of Piagetian Theory in Online Teacher Education. Piagetian theories were included in an online course in cognition and critical thinking in education as foundational psychological frameworks to apply to educational practice. Participants applied theoretical frameworks in instruction and learning design in the form of lessons and projects. Lessons and projects were analyzed for understanding and application of theory.

Abstract: Cognition is at the core of educational and all activity among sentient life. Yet, not enough settings, including educational settings, consciously apply cognitive principles. The value of including cognition in the education of all beings is clear, developing thinking and knowledge. It is of particular importance to incorporate cognitive theory into the training of teachers to further application of cognition in the instruction of all students. This research describes the creation of an online course dedicated toward facilitating the development of understanding of cognition and critical thinking in education and furthering its application by teachers in instruction, learning, and assessment.

Abstract: Innovation of and with technology is fundamental to existence. The need for human learning of technology use and possibility is essential. There is a growing and urgent call to enable our population with the skills to access knowledge, interaction and creation capabilities. Including technology in the curriculum is core to advancing thinking about and use of technology, as is incorporating technology instruction into teacher education. Training teachers to facilitate learning about and use of technology in learning is key to reaching students. This research describes the development of online instruction designed to prepare teachers to implement technology use in the classroom.

Dissecting Cis Regulation of Gene Expression in Human Metabolic Tissues

Abstract: Complex diseases such as obesity and type II diabetes can result from a failure in multiple organ systems including the central nervous system and tissues involved in partitioning and disposal of nutrients. Studying the genetics of gene expression in tissues that are involved in the development of these diseases can provide insights into how these tissues interact within the context of disease. Expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) studies identify mRNA expression changes linked to proximal genetic signals (cis eQTLs) that have been shown to affect disease. Given the high impact of recent eQTL studies, it is important to understand what role sample size and environment plays in identification of cis eQTLs. Here we show in a genotyped obese human population that the number of cis eQTLs obey precise scaling laws as a function of sample size in three profiled tissues, i.e. omental adipose, subcutaneous adipose and liver. Also, we show that genes (or transcripts) with cis eQTL associations detected in a small population are detected at approximately 90% rate in the largest population available for our study, indicating that genes with strong cis acting regulatory elements can be identified with relatively high confidence in smaller populations. However, by increasing the sample size we allow for better detection of weaker and more distantly located cis-regulatory elements. Yet, we determined that the number of tissue specific cis eQTLs saturates in a modestly sized cohort while the number of cis eQTLs common to all tissues fails to reach a maximum value. Understanding the power laws that govern the number and specificity of eQTLs detected in different tissues, will allow a better utilization of genetics of gene expression to inform the molecular mechanism underlying complex disease traits.

Abstract: An ion, atom, molecule or macro-particle in a trap can exhibit large motional oscillations due to the Doppler-affected radiation pressure by a laser, blue-detuned from an absorption line of a particle. This oscillator can be nearly thresholdless, but under certain conditions it may exhibit huge hysteretic excitation. Feasible applications include a "Foucault pendulum" in a trap, a rotation sensor, single atom spectroscopy, isotope separation, etc.
Optical Multi-hysteresises and "Rogue Waves" in Nonlinear Plasma

Abstract: An overdense plasma layer irradiated by an intense light can exhibit dramatic nonlinear-optical effects due to a relativistic mass-effect of free electrons: highly-multiple hysteresises of reflection and transition, and emergence of gigantic "rogue waves". Those are trapped quasi-soliton field spikes inside the layer, sustained by an incident radiation with a tiny fraction of their peak intensity once they have been excited by orders of magnitude larger pumping. The phenomenon persists even in the layers with "soft" boundaries, as well as in a semi-infinite plasma with low absorption.
