PURPOSE: to verify the occurrence of sensorineural hearing loss in children with low level of cumulative lead exposure. METHOD: 156 lead-poisoned children, 94 males and 62 females, ranging in age from 18 months old to 14 years and 5 months old were subjected to analysis of longitudinal lead level in blood as well as pure tone audiometry and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions. RESULTS: the population studied had a mean estimated blood lead level of 12,2±5,7mg/dL (range between 2,4 and 33mg/dL); all children had a normal response in pure tone audiometry at 20 dBHL in the frequencies tested, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz, in both ears; the transient evoked otoacoustic emissions were presented for all frequencies bilaterally in 79 children surveyed. CONCLUSION: there has been no hearing loss in children with a history of low cumulative lead exposure, as there was no injury of cochlear outer hair cells, even if subclinical.

Andrade, Daniela Oliveira de;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2005000400018
Abstract: this study investigated 63 patients with htlv-i associated myelopathy / tropical spastic paraparesis (ham/ tsp) by somatosensitive evoked potentials (seps) and 42 of them by motor evoked potentials (mep). all the patients had typical clinical history of ham, serum samples tested positive for antibodies to htlv-i screened for particle aglutination, elisa and complemented by western blot test. in patients studied by seps of lower limbs 51/63 (81 %) were abnormal and 11 of them (17.5%) were abnormal in upper limbs also. in patients studied by mep 37/42 were abnormal, 34/42 (81%) in lower limbs and 25/42 (59.5%) in upper limbs. a high percent of the population studied had abnormalities of the corticospinal tracts on the four limbs at the pem, without abnormalities in upper limbs by seps, showing the correlation between central motor conduction time in upper limbs and the clinical severity of ham/tsp (p< 0.01). it was not found correlation between time of disease and the results of the seps and mep (p=0.69).
Potencial evocado somatossensitivo e motor na espodilose cervical
Andrade, Daniela Oliveira de;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2005000500023
Abstract: this study investigated 54 patients with cervical spondylosis (cs) with or without symptoms caused by cervical spondylotic myelopathy. cervical mri, somatosensory evoked potentials (seps) and motor evoked potentials (mep) from upper and lower limbs of all of these patients were examined retrospectively. were mri findings the gold standard and the patients were classified in three groups. group 1 (absence of spinal cord compression ); group 2 ( presence of spinal cord indentation); group 3 (spinal cord compression with alteration of intraspinal sign). the sensitivity of sep of four limbs was 61.9%, the same one as the sep of lower limbs. the sensitivity of mep of four limbs was 71.4%, of the upper limbs alone was 66.7% and of the lower limbs alone 52.4%, thus showing the importance of using this method in all four limbs when cervical spondylotic myelopathy is suspected. the results shown by the study of the tibial nerve in sep and of the abductor digiti minimi muscle in mep were more frequently abnormals than the results shown by the study of the median nerve and extensor digitorum brevis muscle in the three groups, suggesting that exists a onset compromising of them.
Andrade, Daniela Oliveira de;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2005000200033
Abstract: there are few reports of the ictal pattern of benign partial epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (bects) in the literature. this paper describes the case of a 7-year-old boy without significant perinatal history or psychomotor development delay. there was positive family history of seizures. magnetic resonance imaging scans of the head was normal. the patient had a nocturnal isolated seizure, followed by a postictal motor deficit at the left arm. the eeg two days after the seizure showed a normal background activity with spikes in the centrotemporal bilateral area, and two subclinicals rhythmic discharges of spike and wave, with a duration of more than 50 seconds in the right centrotemporal area. this pattern of rhythmic discharge wasn not described in bects before.

Abstract: In subtropical or tropical conditions, the insufficient winter chill accumulation is often a limiting factor to break the dormancy of temperate-climate species such as the blackberry, which requires using products to help break dormancy. This study evaluates the efficacy of compounds in breaking dormancy of blackberry and its consequent influence on phenology and crop yields. The experiment was conducted in S?o Manuel, State of S?o Paulo, Brazil, in the 2011/2012 production cycle. The plants used were two-year-old “Tupy” blackberry (Rubus spp.), with 0.6 × 4.0 m spacing (4.166 plants·ha-1). Pruning was performed in August, followed by the application of these treatments: control (water); hydrogen cyanamide (Dormex?); nitrogen fertilizer (Erger?) and mineral oil (Assist?). The concentrations of each compound used were: 2.0%, 4.0%, 6.0% and 8.0%. The compounds used influenced the budding, flowering and fruit harvest stages, in addition to providing increased yields depending on the concentration used. For hydrogen cyanamide the recommended concentration is of 4.2% and 5.4% for nitrogen fertilizer; doses above these concentrations may cause phytotoxic effects. For mineral oil the dose recommended is of 8.0%.

Sba: Controle & Automa??o Sociedade Brasileira de Automatica , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-17592004000100008
Abstract: the present work describes a neural particle classifier system based on topological mapping of the segmented information provided by a high-energy calorimeter, a detector that measures the energy of incoming particles. the achieved classification efficiencies are above 97.50% for the higher energy particle beams, even when experimental data exhibit unavoidable contamination due to the particle beam generation process, what could jeopardize the classifier performance. some deterioration in the performance for the lower energy range is also discussed. the reduction on the dimensionality of the data input space caused by the topological mapping may be very helpful when online implementation of the classifier is required.

Abstract: Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho é confrontar duas concep es política e jurídica da modernidade. Abstract: The aim of this work is to confront two political and legal conceptions of modernity. On one hand, constitutionalism works with the mythification of the Constitution which operates an economy of violence legally sanctioned. On the other hand, democracy is fed on a promise that never comes enough or satisfies and, at the same time, suffers constant attacks of those who glorify it. Allied to Benjamin and Derrida, it propose a critique of the bases postulated by constitutionalism under the sign of the Constitution. The condition to Democracy overcomes remains on the experience of the impossible, shifting constitutional horizons and structures. Key-words: Democracy; Constitution; Deconstruction; Violence

Motricidade , 2011, DOI: 10.6063/motricidade.7(2).107
Abstract: This study aimed at evaluating the activities of daily living and quality of active and inactive seniors’ life. This is a descriptive research of a quantitative nature. Participants were 24 seniors, 12 physical activity practitioners (PPA) and 12 non-practitioners (NPPA). The instrument was a demographic questionnaire and SF-36 for measuring the quality of life and tests proposed by GDLAM. SPSS 15.0 was used for data analysis. The results obtained by the sociodemographic questionnaire for PPA and NPPA groups were, respectively: age 69.5 and 70.0 years, marital status 50.0% widower and 41.7% were married; education 50.0% with complete elementary school and 58.3% with incomplete elementary school; health problems 25.0% and 58.33% hypertension. In functional autonomy tests, the PPA group had shorter execution time when compared with the NPPA group; however, both groups found themselves in the rating of "weak" according to the protocol GDLAM. We concluded that there was no statistical difference between groups.
