Abstract: this work evaluated the effect of the pre-germination in the initial growth of bauhinia forficata seeds in different substrates. the seeds were submitted to the pre-germination in humidified germitest paper with solution of cloranfenicol 1 ml.l-1 of distilled water. after, the paper was taken to the germination chamber at 25 oc during eight days. after this period, the pre-germinated seeds and intact seeds (witness) had been taken in local nursery and sown in different substrata: organic composition (50%) + subsoil land (50%); sand (25%) + subsoil earth (75%) and subsoil erth (100%). the diameter of collects, height of the plants, leaf number, green mass of the aerial part and of root and dry mass of the aerial part and of root, 60 and 120 days after the sowing, were evaluated. after 60 days, no statistical difference was noted between tested substrate. however, the treatments of the seeds demonstrated significant difference and the pre-germinated seeds presented higher values in all of the evaluated parameters. after 120 days, the organic composition presented better result, except for de collect diameter, leaf number and dry mass of the root. for the treatment of the seeds, the pre-germination presented better results for all evaluated parameters, except for the leaf number. the results pointed out that the composed organic substratum and subsoil land are the best procedure for the production of the b. forficata. moreover, the pre-germination provided more vigorous plantules and seedlings with higher weight and growth in comparison to the control.

Abstract: This article has for objective to discuss the approach of cultural aspects in the English language classes, always pointing the relevance of working language associated to the culture. We present some definitions of language, identity and culture, and some expressed relationships of these elements in the existent dialogue in the language teaching and learning. By discussing on the foreign language teacher's intercultural formation, some of the problems found by the teachers while they work with cultural aspects are also pointed out, presenting suggestions and considerations to favor a critical intercultural teaching.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the association between quantitative ultrasonography at hand phalanges (qus) and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (dxa), and between these methods with food intake and history of bone fractures. subjects and methods:after two years of follow up of 270 schoolchildren, 10 of them, who showed bone mass below - 2 sd in qus, were included in the present study. laboratory results and dxa data were analyzed. results: bone mass evaluated by dxa at l1-l4 ranged from -2.8 to -1.1 sds, and whole body bone mass, from -2.9 to -1.2 sds. three children had history of non-pathological bone fractures. dietary assessment showed low intake of calcium in 10 cases, of phosphorus in 6, and of vitamin d in 8 cases. there were no differences among the cases of bone mass below-2 sd in any of the three used methods. there was no association between history of bone fractures and food intake, and between these evaluations and bone mass. conclusion: in this small group of schoolchildren there was an association between the methods qus and dxa. however, there was no association between bone mass and the history of bone fractures, or calcium, phosphorus and vitamin d intake.
Guidelines on how to assess the validity of results presented in subgroup analysis of clinical trials

Abstract: in observational studies, identification of associations within particular subgroups is the usual method of investigation. as an exploratory method, it is the bread and butter of epidemiological research. nearly everything that has been learned in epidemiology has been derived from the analysis of subgroups. in a randomized clinical trial, the entire purpose is the comparison of the test subjects and the controls, and when there is particular interest in the results of treatment in a certain section of trial participants, a subgroup analysis is performed. these subgroups are examined to see if they are liable to a greater benefit or risk from treatment. thus, analyzing patient subsets is a natural part of the process of improving therapeutic knowledge through clinical trials. nevertheless, the reliability of subgroup analysis can often be poor because of problems of multiplicity and limitations in the numbers of patients studied. the naive interpretation of the results of such examinations is a cause of great confusion in the therapeutic literature. we emphasize the need for readers to be aware that inferences based on comparisons between subgroups in randomized clinical trials should be approached more cautiously than those based on the main comparison. that is, subgroup analysis results derived from a sound clinical trial are not necessarily valid; one must not jump to conclusions and accept the validity of subgroup analysis results without an appropriate judgment.

Abstract: the present study is a bibliographic research that aims to discuss the theme "the dependent elderly and caregiver's skills in domiciliary context". the authors who developed studies on dependent elderly, familiar care and non-professional care actions were consulted. the themes emphasized were: the role of non-professional caregivers; the experience of caring a relative, and models of assistance and support for non-professional caregivers. the study shows the importance of establishing strategies of support for the community care. it is up to the health professionals and to the public policies to value a support system to the dependent aged cared in community. this system should be the base for a qualified process of care.

Abstract: in a society in which the values are in constant alterations in the behaviour of each individual, identification of the same values in the young athletes is of vital importance in order that better the process is understood by which you link they take determined decisions, in athletic situations. the questions associated to the ethics in the sport, and more specifically than concern the athletic spirit and the tolerance, assume today an added importance. in fact, we cannot deny the importance, in several extents, of the practice and of the athletic show, it is necessary to recognize them to me also what they reveal themselves how special fields, in which the ends - to win - justify any ways - violence, the corruption, the fraud, to wanting to win to all and any cost, the doping, the disloyalty, the absence of athletic spirit, etc. the sports ethics appears like a moral structure that defines some limits for the behaviour of the sportsmen, of form to preserve an athletic civilized system. it is possible to compete respecting the adversary, recognizing his value and competence, seeing it like an essential opponent, without whom there is not competition. several investigators defend that the participation, of the children and adolescents in physical activities contributes to a global and harmonious development of the same, because it will have to give attention to the importance of the athletic spirit like component of the process of development of the child and adolescents. with this work some reflections were intended to present on the acquisition of values and beginnings in the athletic context.
