Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) typically induces and maintains the activation of several phylogenetically old adaptative and defensive mechanisms. Activation is usually needed for a limited period during acute injury. In chronic disease conditions, however, those mechanisms are kept activated for longer periods. Eventually, irreversible damage is produced and this contributes to impaired function and worse prognosis in a variety of chronic diseases. The inflammatory cells and human bronchial smooth muscles are known to play an important role in the production of innate immunity cytokines and neurotrophins which have been recognized as mediators of both inflammatory and airway remodeling processes. When neurotrophins such as Neurotrophin 3 (NT-3) were initially discovered, they were thought to be only regulatory factors of the development, differentiation and survival of the neurons. Later, it was proved that they are also involved in inflammatory responses. In experimental animal models, neurotrophin may contribute to the development of bronchial hyperresponsivness. The persistent activation of the innate immune system by smoke exposure, releases the ROS that lead to a pronounced chronic inflammation of both airway and pulmonary parenchyma.

Abstract: In this paper we were focused on the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in Hypericum perforatum L and Echinacea purpurea L., Moench plantlets, obtained from seeds irradiated with gamma rays before germination.Total activity as well as specific activity of SOD in Hypericum perforatum L. plantlets shows an inhibition, which becames higher at higher irradiation doses. For Echinacea purpurea L. species, gamma radiation shows a slowly stimulative effect of total activity of SOD for some of the higher doses, but the specific enzyme activity is inhibated for all irradiation doses applyed on non-germinated irradiated seeds.

Heroic efforts to develop a cancer vaccine can be traced as far back as 1777 when the surgeon to the Duke of Kent injected himself with malignant tissue as a prophylaxis against development of cancer. In 1808, another attempt was made to develop a cancer vaccine by the doctor to Louis XVII who inoculated himself with breast cancer in hope of reversing a soft-tissue sarcoma, although no therapeutic effect was observed. However, it was not until 1891 that the first report of successful immunotherapy was published by William Coley, a clinician at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in New York. Using heat-killed endotoxin-containing bacteria (streptococci and Serratia marcescens), Coley was able to achieve a cure rate of 10% in soft-tissue sarcoma [1,2]. Nevertheless, despite the numerous attempts over the past centuries to use the immune system in the eradication of cancer, the success rate of cellular immunotherapy remains abysmally low.In light of the successes in the development of vaccines targeting pathogenic agents, this review suggests that lessons learned from the immunology of infectious disease may be applicable to the treatment of neoplasia. The immunology of infectious disease teaches that the clearance of a pathogenic challenge requires the initiation of an immune response of the appropriate quality and quantity.
