Revista de la ciencia del suelo y nutrición vegetal , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-27912008000300003
Abstract: the goal of the present study was to characterize the nutritional quality of the soils colonized by four endemic leguminous shrubs of serra do cipo, southeastern brazil: calliandra fasciculata benth., chamaecrista ramosa (vog.), collaea cipoensis fortunato and mimosa foliolosa benth. a mixed soil sample collected between 0 and 15cm depth was obtained in four subpopulations of each species. each mixed sample resulted from the combination of 20 simple samples (four samples of five adult individuals) in each subpopulation. routine, organic matter, micronutrients, and granulometric analysis were performed for each sample. the soils colonized by the four species were sandy, acidic, deficient in all macronutrients, and with high aluminum saturation. however, the levels of organic matter, zinc, iron, and bore ranged from medium to high. there was no significant difference in organic matter, phosphorus, iron, bore, sulphur, potential acidity, and granulometric parameters among the soils of the four species. the results of the present study corroborate previous studies in rupestrian field soils of serra do cipo. management plans and land rehabilitation programs should keep the conditions of low soil fertility because the endemic flora adapt well on these soils and may have increased competitive ability under these nutritional ranges.

Abstract: objective: the iowa gambling task is a neuropsychological task developed in english, most widely used to assess decision-making. the aim of this work was to adapt the iowa gambling task to brazilian portuguese, compare it with the original version and assess its validity. method: we assessed 75 brazilian adults divided into three groups: 1) 25 healthy volunteers holding the proficiency certificate in english tested using the english version of the iowa gambling task; 2) 25 healthy volunteers who did not speak or read english tested using the iowa gambling task-portuguese; 3) 25 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder subjects tested with the iowa gambling task-portuguese. results: no difference between groups 1 and 2 was observed. nonetheless, we found significant differences between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder subjects and the other 2 groups on blocks 3, 4, 5, and on net score. conclusion: our results are similar to those previously described in the literature concerning adults without neuropsychiatric diseases. since those two versions were equivalent and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder subjects performed significantly worse than healthy volunteers we can conclude that the adaptation of the iowa gambling task to brazilian portuguese is valid and can be used for research purposes in the brazilian context.

Abstract: steroid therapy has been tested as a protector in spinal cord injury. multicenter studies evaluating the methylprednisolone (mp) in post traumatic neurological recovery have shown promising results according to nascis. a large number of critical studies related to the nascis results have been published. objective: to review literature related to use of methylprednisolone compared with placebo. methods: this analysis added the average improvement achieved in groups of patients who used mp and placebo (pl) to the average scores of groups at baseline, before treatment, resulting in the final neurological outcome for both groups. results: the motor score of the mp group was only 2.5 points higher than the pl in a one year follow-up. in neurologically intact patients, the total score is 70 points. improvement in sensitive scores was also discrete (1.1 and 1.7 points for the pinprick and light touch respectively). a high rate of complications was observed in a group of patients about 60 years old who used mp. conclusion: differences in the clinical magnitude of benefit obtained (not confirmed by other studies) with the use of mp or pl are not significant, in comparison with the potential for complications when using methylprednisolone.

Abstract: at the workplace, individuals are increasingly expected to be able to learn how to learn and to take the initiative of their own learning process. in this context, understanding of individual factors related to learning gains in importance. this report describes the adaptation and validation of an instrument for the measurement of one of these factors, denominated learning strategies at work, understood as the efforts undertaken by the individual to carry out his or her own learning process in working contexts. based on a scale already validated in a banking sector organization, the adapted measure was applied to a sample of 90 mayors and 365 municipal secretaries, due to the huge learning demand imposed to them by their working conditions. results of factor analysis indicated a five factor structure (extrinsic and intrinsic reflection, search for help in written material, search for interpersonal help, practical application and reproduction) that is consistent with the results obtained with other samples.

Abstract: the amount of material served to panelists and heterogeneity in foods, have ever been a trouble to the sensory analyst. they used to be regarded as interference in results and, sometimes, could explain no difference found in products or non realistic differences. in order to study these aspects, experiments were carried out with pods in brine and little biscuits employing the degree of difference test. the first experiment (exp. i), with pods, showed no difference when employing one or five grains. of course, to employ one grain can not be recommended. the other two experiments, exp. ii and exp. iii, with pods (the second) and little biscuits (the third) had not confirmed increasing of variability in results which could be regarded as related to heterogeneity of materials, and more, there was no evidence of great effects of heterogeneity on the observed averages. then, the amount of material served to panelists and the heterogeneity in materials could not change the conclusions obtained from these experiments.

Application of rapid bioassessment protocols (RBP) for benthic macroinvertebrates in Brazil: comparison between sampling techniques and mesh sizes
Buss, Daniel F.;Borges, Erika L.;
Neotropical Entomology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2008000300007
Abstract: this study is part of the effort to test and to establish rapid bioassessment protocols (rbp) using benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators of the water quality of wadeable streams in south-east brazil. we compared the cost-effectiveness of sampling devices frequently used in rbps, surber and kick-net samplers, and of three mesh sizes (125, 250 and 500 μm). a total of 126,815 benthic macroinvertebrates were collected, representing 57 families. samples collected with kick method had significantly higher richness and bmwp scores in relation to surber, but no significant increase in the effort, measured by the necessary time to process samples. no significant differences were found between samplers considering the cost/effectiveness ratio. considering mesh sizes, significantly higher abundance and time for processing samples were necessary for finer meshes, but no significant difference were found considering taxa richness or bmwp scores. as a consequence, the 500 μm mesh had better cost/effectiveness ratios. therefore, we support the use of a kick-net with a mesh size of 500 μm for macroinvertebrate sampling in rbps using family level in streams of similar characteristics in brazil.
