Economic and Policy Implications of Industry Interdependence: An Input-output Approach

Abstract: The study provides an overview of the fundamental principles of input-output theory, the steps involved in linkage analysis and the estimation of industry multipliers. These have been estimated using a ‘new’ symmetric input-output table for the Maltese economy for 2007 which is used as an example to draw policy-relevant lessons for countries with relatively small open economies. On the basis of these estimates it is argued that (1) the effect of an increase in final demand will go beyond the industry directly affected by the initial change in expenditure, (2) that multipliers provide an important guide to policy makers that are concerned with making optimal use of their scarce resources, (3) that governments of countries that depend heavily on foreign direct investment can target labour intensive industries to tilt the balance in favour of the worker, (4) that a firm-specific approach is preferable to expansionary fiscal policy when a country is heavily dependent on imported products, and (5) that market distortions and inefficiencies are more damaging in those sectors that have strong forward linkages with other sectors in the domestic economy. Detection of Leishmania parasites in the testis of a dog affected by orchitis: case report

Abstract: Background Transmission of canine leishmaniasis (CanL), a severe infection caused by L. infantum, usually occurs through the sand fly bite to the vertebrate host. A venereal route of transmission has also been suggested, but this issue is still controversial. Findings Here, we report a case of a dog affected by orchitis showing a clinical profile of L. infantum infection. By exploiting a real-time PCR assay, we detected a significantly higher DNA load of the parasite in the lymph node and testis than in blood and urine samples collected from the dog. Conclusions Our results suggest that: 1) L. infantum infection can be associated with testicular lesions in naturally infected dogs; 2) genital involvement could result in shedding of the parasites in the semen, favoring venereal transmission of the disease.
Molecular epidemiology of nosocomial infections in an intensive care unit: results of a one-year surveillance study

Abstract: Background. Nosocomial infections contribute substantially to increased morbidity, mortality and resource expenditure in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Methods. A one-year prospective surveillance study was performed using epidemiological and microbiological methods to quantify the frequency of infections and the antimicrobial usage, microbiological environmental sampling and molecular typing of clinical and environmental isolates. Results. The frequency of ICU-acquired infections was comparable to other Italian ICUs. Most of these infections were caused by few epidemic clones of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii. The survival advantage of these epidemic clones over the sporadic isolates may be related to the multi-resistant profile of the epidemic clones and to the high usage of some antibiotics in the ICU. Hand contamination of ICU personnel is a likely factor for dissemination of epidemic clones within the ICU. Conclusions. The integrated surveillance approach described in this study is able to clarify the complex epidemiology of ICU-acquired infections and can provide important cues for prevention and control activities.
Modeling the emergence of a new language: Naming Game with hybridization

Abstract: In recent times, the research field of language dynamics has focused on the investigation of language evolution, dividing the work in three evolutive steps, according to the level of complexity: lexicon, categories and grammar. The Naming Game is a simple model capable of accounting for the emergence of a lexicon, intended as the set of words through which objects are named. We introduce a stochastic modification of the Naming Game model with the aim of characterizing the emergence of a new language as the result of the interaction of agents. We fix the initial phase by splitting the population in two sets speaking either language A or B. Whenever the result of the interaction of two individuals results in an agent able to speak both A and B, we introduce a finite probability that this state turns into a new idiom C, so to mimic a sort of hybridization process. We study the system in the space of parameters defining the interaction, and show that the proposed model displays a rich variety of behaviours, despite the simple mean field topology of interactions.
XTribe: a web-based social computation platform

Abstract: In the last few years the Web has progressively acquired the status of an infrastructure for social computation that allows researchers to coordinate the cognitive abilities of human agents in on-line communities so to steer the collective user activity towards predefined goals. This general trend is also triggering the adoption of web-games as a very interesting laboratory to run experiments in the social sciences and whenever the contribution of human beings is crucially required for research purposes. Nowadays, while the number of on-line users has been steadily growing, there is still a need of systematization in the approach to the web as a laboratory. In this paper we present Experimental Tribe (XTribe in short), a novel general purpose web-based platform for web-gaming and social computation. Ready to use and already operational, XTribe aims at drastically reducing the effort required to develop and run web experiments. XTribe has been designed to speed up the implementation of those general aspects of web experiments that are independent of the specific experiment content. For example, XTribe takes care of user management by handling their registration and profiles and in case of multi-player games, it provides the necessary user grouping functionalities. XTribe also provides communication facilities to easily achieve both bidirectional and asynchronous communication. From a practical point of view, researchers are left with the only task of designing and implementing the game interface and logic of their experiment, on which they maintain full control. Moreover, XTribe acts as a repository of different scientific experiments, thus realizing a sort of showcase that stimulates users' curiosity, enhances their participation, and helps researchers in recruiting volunteers.

Abstract: This article discusses the theoretical concepts underpinning a multimodal approach to poetry teaching and considers a number of ways in which this can be adopted in practice. It discusses what is entailed by the concept of multimodality and examines the claims made about the benefits of employing a multimodal approach. It reviews the literature on multimodality and examines how teachers may blend a variety of techniques and resources in order not just to engage their students with poetry but also to activate language learning. In particular, this article examines how by tapping students’ visual and digital literacy skills they are enabled to create video poems, podcasts, hypertexts and wikis, all of which represent new ways of using language and experiencing poetry. Through constant reference to the research carried out so far, this article seeks to show how by means of a multimodal approach poetry can act as a springboard for the development of students’ language proficiency and creative engagement.

Abstract:

For a two-dimensional complex vector space, the spin matrices can be calculated directly from the angular momentum commutator definition. The 3 Pauli matrices are retrieved and 23 other triplet solutions are found. In the three-dimensional space, we show that no matrix fulfills the spin equations and preserves the norm of the vectors. By using a Clifford geometric algebra it is possible in the four-dimensional spacetime (STA) to retrieve the 24 different spins 1/2. In this framework, spins 1/2 are rotations characterized by multivectors composed of 3 vectors and 3 bivectors. Spins 1 can be defined as rotations characterized by 4 vectors, 6 bivectors and 4 trivectors which result in unit multivectors which preserve the norm. Let us note that this simple derivation retrieves the main spin properties of particle physics.

Abstract: The 21st century keeps huge challenges for the system “city”. Shortage of resources and world population growth forces architects to think in spaces with increasingly more structural linkages. No era has shaped the system of a city like the oil age did. Its grown structures are dependent from cheap and easy to produce petroleum. The postmodern city, facing the end of cheap and abundant oil, is now dependent from this finite resource. To minimize the dependency from hydrocarbon energy it is necessary to increase urban density, to switch to renewable energy production and to create new spaces for multifunctional purposes. An essential problem of urban agglomeration, though, is the fact that distances between food production and consumption have increased drastically in the last fifty years. Cheap oil made it possible to implement a global food transportation
network and it also supported intensive monocultural food production. Today’s food no more gets bought from local markets, but from labels. Its value is dependent from the brand-image, represented from the tertiary sector. The end of cheap fossil fuels carries a huge potential for architects and urban planners—we can move away from representing abstract, non-spatial processes and identities but creating spaces for dynamic local interactions. A promising typus for this might be the Vertical Farm.

Abstract: This paper presents an information theoretic approach to the concept of intelligence in the computational sense. We introduce a probabilistic framework from which computation alintelligence is shown to be an entropy minimizing process at the local level. Using this new scheme, we develop a simple data driven clustering example and discuss its applications.

Abstract:

In this paper, we continue the efforts of the Computational Theory of Intelligence (CTI) by extending concepts to include computational processes in terms of Genetic Algorithms (GA’s) and Turing Machines (TM’s). Active, Passive, and Hybrid Computational Intelligence processes are also introduced and discussed. We consider the ramifications of the assumptions of CTI with regard to the qualities of reproduction and virility. Applications to Biology, Computer Science and Cyber Security are also discussed.
