The origin of biological information and programmed protein synthesis  [PDF]
Dan Liu
American Journal of Molecular Biology (AJMB) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajmb.2013.34027
Abstract: Biological information is one of the most important characteristics of life, and it enables life to evolve to higher complexity and adapt to the environment by mutation and natural selection. However, the origin of this information recording and retrieval system remains a mystery. To understand the origin of biological information will lead us to one step closer to understand the origin of life on earth. Biological information is encoded in DNA and translated into protein by the ribosome in all free living organisms. The information has to be translated into proteins to carry out its biological functions, so the evolution of the ribosome must be integrated with the development of biological information. In this article, I propose that the small ribosomal subunit evolved from a ribozyme that acted as an RNA helicase in the ancient RNA world, and the involvement of tRNAs and the large ribosomal subunit evolved to enhance the helicase activity and to overcome the higher energy require-ment for high GC content RNA helices. This process could have developed as a primitive recording mechanism: since Watson-Crick base paring is a natural property of RNA, each time the proto-small ribosomal subunit came to a particular GC-rich helix, tRNA-like molecules and the proto-large ribosomal subunit would have to be engaged to generate the helicase activity, and consequently the same polypeptide would be synthesized as a by-product. Simple recorded messages then evolved into useful biological information through continuous mutation and natu-ral selection. This hypothesis provides logical and incremental steps for the development of programmed protein synthesis. I also argue that the helicase activity is preserved in the modern ribosome and that from our knowledge of the ribosome, and we can deduce the possible mechanisms of the helicase activity.
The Long-Term Impact of Household Wealth on Income Mobility  [PDF]
Kai Zhang, Dan Liu
Modern Economy (ME) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/me.2017.83024
Abstract: By using the China Health and Nutrition Survey data, this paper targets the generation who enter the labor market at the age of 18 to 35 and tries to study the long-term impact of their family health on income mobility as well as keep track of the tendency. Three conclusions can be drown from the research. Firstly, the impact is more significant in the second poor group and the middle-income group than that in the high-income group, and that of the low-income group is the worst. Secondly, in the long run, the impact shows a weakening trend, but the changing process is not the same. Thirdly, the significance of impact varies in different age groups. Compared with the groups aged 20 to 35 and 25 to 30, the impact is relatively remarkable for those who just enter the labor market aged 18 to 25.
Research on Social Responsibility Information Disclosure of Listed Dairy Companies in China  [PDF]
Dan Wang, Feixian Liu
Journal of Service Science and Management (JSSM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jssm.2018.113022
Abstract: Taking the report data of 10 listed dairy companies in China in 2016 as the research sample, it is found that the disclosure subject of New Hope Group is New Hope Liuhe Co., Ltd. and its subsidiaries, and it is considered that its report hardly involves dairy industry activities. Therefore, it was excluded from the valid sample; Feihe Group was listed in New York, USA, and could not obtain the relevant report, so it was excluded as a valid sample. In this paper, the situation of social responsibility information disclosure is analyzed in detail, and the problems existing in the social responsibility information disclosure of the whole industry are picked out by typical individuals. And from three aspects of the information disclosure content, the standard, and the function, the countermeasure and the suggestion are put forward.
Modeling Simulation Technology Research for Distribution Network Planning  [PDF]
Huanghuang Liu, Dan Liu, Qianjin Liu
Energy and Power Engineering (EPE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/epe.2013.54B188
Abstract:

This paper proposes to use the power system simulation software CYME to plan, model and simulate for an actual distribution network for improving the reliability and efficiency, enhancing the efficiency and capacity, simulating the abnormal condition of distribution network, and presenting operation program of safe, reliable and having simulation record statements. The modeling simulation results show that the software module has lots of advantages including high accuracy, ideal reliability, powerful practicality in simulation and analysis of distribution network, it only need to create once model, the model can sufficiently satisfy multifarious types of simulation analysis required for the distribution network planning.

A Structuralist Analysis of Conradian Narrative in The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’
Dan LIU
Studies in Literature and Language , 2011, DOI: 10.3968/j.sll.1923156320110303.125
Abstract: Conrad, as a novelist, not only endeavored to delve into human being’s mental world and innate nature, but also laid enormous stress on the form of fiction and the innovation of writing techniques. The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’, an important landmark at the beginning of Conrad’s major phase, is Conrad’s first experiment in methods of descriptive rendering. Besides, the whole story is told by the crewman-narrator but there is evidently a combination of authorial and personal narrative. Moreover, the intricate interaction of changes in perspective and distance, which often attracted attention and interest from critics and readers alike, serve to enhance the thematics of solidarity and work ethic and the aesthetic value of this novel. Key words: Conradian narrative; Perspective and distance; The use of FID; Prolepsis

What Causes the Differences in Management Practices between US and UK? An Application of Decomposition Analysis on Firms across Countries  [PDF]
Yi Su, Baoding Liu, Dan Li
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2018.810109
Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine what makes the differences of management practices between the United States and the United Kingdom using decomposition analysis. First, this study analyzes the determinants of management practices, and does the empirical research. Determinants of management practices are concluding product market competition, ownership, firm age, human resources (education, working hours, and payment). Essentially we argue that the differences (if any) between US and UK’s management practices can be expanded by product market competition and education. The results demonstrate that education (managers’ degree and employees’ degree) is positively correlated with management practice gap, but the impact of competition on management practices gap is negative. In particular, employees’ degree variables explained approximately 70% of the management gap.

Anyin Chen, Wenjun Xiang, Dan Liu, Changlu Liu, Li Yang
Journal of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering (MSCE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/msce.2016.42014
Abstract: The total flavonoids of Houttuynia cordata are determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The ex-traction condition of flavonoids from Houttuynia cordata includes: the extraction temperature is 70, solid-liquid ratio is 1:20, solvent is 80% ethanol, extraction time is 65 min. We studied the antioxidation of flavonoids in Houttuynia cordata, and results showed that flavonoids had strong reducing capacity, hydroxyl free radical scavenging activity and the superoxide anion radical scavenging ability, thus can provide a basis for the development of natural antioxidants.
