Abstract: cquired unilateral rubella retinopathy in adult Case report (4205) Total Article Views Authors: Nadyr Damasceno, Eduardo Damasceno, Eduardo Souza Published Date December 2010 Volume 2011:5 Pages 3 - 4 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.2147/OPTH.S15273 Nadyr Damasceno1, Eduardo Damasceno1, Eduardo Souza2 1Department of Ophthalmology, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, RJ, Brazil; 2Department of Ophthalmology, Universidade Federal of S o Paulo, SP, Brazil Abstract: The authors report an uncommon case of unilateral rubella retinopathy in an adult patient, described for the first time in medical literature. A 28-year-old healthy white man acquired a case of vasculitis and retinitis on his right eye with sudden vision loss, preceded by an acute viral disease (best correct visual acuity was 20/200). Serology examinations on several viral diseases reveled positive signs to rubella. The treatment was based on corticoids therapy due to macular commitment with final visual acuity of 20/60. Serology concluded rubella etiology, with positive levels in the acute initial stage of viral infection, even during viral retinopathy.

The case is described as a complication of ranibizumab and bevacizumab due to an inflammatory process. Several reasons are suggested to explain this possibility, and the authors conclude that the main cause remains unknown.

PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0096193
Abstract: Background The cerebellum is an important site for cortical demyelination in multiple sclerosis, but the functional significance of this finding is not fully understood. Objective To evaluate the clinical and cognitive impact of cerebellar grey-matter pathology in multiple sclerosis patients. Methods Forty-two relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients and 30 controls underwent clinical assessment including the Multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite, Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and cerebellar functional system (FS) score, and cognitive evaluation, including the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT) and the Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (SDMT). Magnetic resonance imaging was performed with a 3T scanner and variables of interest were: brain white-matter and cortical lesion load, cerebellar intracortical and leukocortical lesion volumes, and brain cortical and cerebellar white-matter and grey-matter volumes. Results After multivariate analysis high burden of cerebellar intracortical lesions was the only predictor for the EDSS (p<0.001), cerebellar FS (p = 0.002), arm function (p = 0.049), and for leg function (p<0.001). Patients with high burden of cerebellar leukocortical lesions had lower PASAT scores (p = 0.013), while patients with greater volumes of cerebellar intracortical lesions had worse SDMT scores (p = 0.015). Conclusions Cerebellar grey-matter pathology is widely present and contributes to clinical dysfunction in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients, independently of brain grey-matter damage.
Integra??o financeira internacional e crescimento econ?mico: uma crítica à abordagem convencional
Damasceno, Aderbal Oliveira;
Economia e Sociedade , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-06182007000200003
Abstract: abstract the arguments in favor of developing an institutional framework for the liberalization of capital flows among countries are based on theoretical models that underline a set of channels through which the international financial integration would lead to a better resource allocation, stimulating long run economic growth. the aim of this work is to make a critical evaluation of those models, emphasizing their main fragilities and the lack of empirical evidence to support them. in addition, this paper outline an alternative approach, a post-keynesian point of view.
Integra??o financeira e crescimento econ?mico: teoria, evidência e política
Damasceno, Aderbal Oliveira;
Economia e Sociedade , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-06182012000300003
Abstract: this paper develops a theoretical and empirical analysis regarding the relationship between financial integration and long-run economic growth. using data for a sample of 105 countries over the period 1980-2004, will be estimated growth equations specified in the form of a dynamic panel data model. the theoretical literature analysis clarifies the fragility of the theoretical framework that fundaments the hypothesis that financial integration stimulates long-run economic growth. the econometrical evidences presented do not corroborate the hypothesis that financial integration stimulates the long-run economic growth, even for countries with high levels of institutional development, of financial development, of trade openness, of macroeconomic stability and of exchange rate arrangement flexibility. these results question the rationale underlying the policy recommendations for the elimination of capital controls.
Narrativas e imágenes del turismo en Petrópolis, Brasil, a principios del siglo XX
Daibert,André Barcelos Damasceno;
Estudios y perspectivas en turismo , 2011,
Abstract: this paper is an historical analysis of the early organized tourism in the city of petrópolis through the narratives and images produced at the beginning of the 20th century. as a general objective, this paper intended to analyze how the construction of the so-called "tourist nature" of petrópolis originated, by means of a historical perspective. the specific objective was to understand and identify the main narratives and images which support this cultural construction, emphasizing its origins between 1900 and 1930. the study was developed with the resource of the existing technical and scientific literature as well as documentary and iconographic research which depicted narratives and images of tourism in petrópolis at the outset of its organization. the aim of this work was not only to propose the insertion of petrópolis in a possible chronology of brazilian tourism, but also to provoke and sensitize researchers of the field to the need of investments in empirical researches of historical nature in the field of tourism in the different brazilian cities, as well as in brazil as a whole.
