Building a Better Mousetrap: Replacing Subjective Writing Rubrics with More Empirically-Sound Alternatives for EFL Learners  [PDF]

Abstract: Although writing rubrics can provide valuable feedback, the criteria they use are often subjective, which compels raters to employ their own tacit biases. The purpose of this study is to see if discreet empirical characteristics of texts can be used in lieu of the rubric to objectively assess the writing quality of EFL learners. The academic paragraphs of 38 participants were evaluated according to several empirically calculable criteria related to cohesion, content, and grammar. Values were then compared to scores obtained from holistic scoring by multiple raters using a multiple regression formula. The resulting correlation between variables (R = .873) was highly significant, suggesting that more empirical, impartial means of writing evaluation can now be used in conjunction with technology to provide student feedback and teacher training.

This paper describes the mixed methods approach adopted for exploring the ethical governance of Australian national sporting organisations. Both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies were employed using survey questionnaires and focus groups.
The Intersubjective Ethic of Julieta Paredes’ Poetic

Abstract: This paper explores the ways in which the feminist activist group Mujeres Creando’s contemporary urban street performances and Julieta Paredes‘ poetry catalyze discussions around intersubjective ethics in the Andes. First, I discuss subjectivity as suspended in the inextricable space between embodiment and textuality, between the physical attributes of breathing bodies and the subsequent categorization of them in language and texts. Second, I argue that Mujeres Creando's and Paredes’ emphasis on the body as a site of active resistance to social norms contributes to the creation of what Emmanuel Levinas calls a “living poetic.“ This living, embodied poetic is less about producing a frozen "said," fixed in language than about creating a breathing, moving "saying", as is perpetuated through spoken dialogue. The necessity for an ethical poetic emerges out of colonial conditions that have created definitions of the human and the “less than” or “other than,” often based on superficial physical categorizations. Ultimately, through their ongoing work, Mujeres Creando and Julieta Paredes expand the potential for a more inclusive community based upon mutual responsibility and respect for the self and other, regardless of race, gender, or sexuality. Este trabajo explora los modos en que la poesía de Julieta Paredes y los performances callejeros del colectivo feminista Mujeres Creando catalizan discusiones en torno a una ética intersubjetiva en los Andes. Comienzo discutiendo la subjetividad como situada en el inextricable espacio entre la corporeización y la textualidad, entre las cualidades físicas de cuerpos que respiran y su subsecuente categorización en lengua y textos. En segundo lugar, sostengo que el énfasis que Mujeres Creando y Paredes ponen en el “cuerpo” como sitio de resistencia activa a la normatividad social, contribuye a la creación de lo que Emmanuel Levinas llama una “poética viva”. Se trata de una poética menos interesada en producir un decir congelado, fijado en el lenguaje, que en crear un decir que respira, que se mueve, conforme es perpetuado a través del diálogo hablado. De aquí la necesidad de una ética poética, que emerge de las condiciones coloniales que han creado definiciones del ser humano y el “menos que” o “distinto a” que a menudo se basan en clasificaciones físicas superficiales. En última instancia, mostraré que a través de su trabajo, Mujeres Creando y Julieta Paredes amplían el potencial de una comunidad más inclusiva basada en la responsabilidad y el respeto mutuo, sin importar la raza, el sexo, o la sexualidad.
Negative dependence and stochastic orderings

Abstract: We explore negative dependence and stochastic orderings, showing that if an integer-valued random variable $W$ satisfies a certain negative dependence assumption, then $W$ is smaller (in the convex sense) than a Poisson variable of equal mean. Such $W$ include those which may be written as a sum of totally negatively dependent indicators. This is generalised to other stochastic orderings. Applications include entropy bounds, Poisson approximation and concentration. The proof uses thinning and size-biasing. We also show how these give a different Poisson approximation result, which is applied to mixed Poisson distributions. Analogous results for the binomial distribution are also presented.
Compound geometric approximation under a failure rate constraint

Abstract: We consider compound geometric approximation for a nonnegative, integer-valued random variable $W$. The bound we give is straightforward but relies on having a lower bound on the failure rate of $W$. Applications are presented to M/G/1 queuing systems, for which we state explicit bounds in approximations for the number of customers in the system and the number of customers served during a busy period. Other applications are given to birth-death processes and Poisson processes.
Independent and Combined Effects of Exercise and Vitamin D on Muscle Morphology, Function and Falls in the Elderly

Abstract: Regular exercise, particularly progressive resistance training (PRT), is recognized as one of the most effective strategies to prevent age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia), but its effects on muscle function are mixed. However, emerging data indicates that high velocity PRT (fast concentric muscle contractions) is more effective for improving functional outcomes than traditional PRT. In terms of falls prevention, high-challenging balance training programs appear to be most effective. There is also compelling evidence that supplemental vitamin D is an effective therapeutic option for falls prevention. The findings from a recent meta-analysis revealed that supplemental vitamin D at a dose of at least 700–1,000 IU/d or an achieved serum 25(OH)D level of at least 60 nmol/L was associated with reduced falls risk among older individuals. Based on these findings, it is possible that the combination of exercise and vitamin D could have a synergistic effect on muscle morphology and function, particularly since both interventions have been shown to have beneficial effects on type II “fast twitch” muscle fibers and systemic inflammation, which have both been linked to losses in muscle mass and function. Unfortunately however, the findings from the limited number of factorial 2 × 2 design RCTs indicate that additional vitamin D does not enhance the effects of exercise on measures of muscle morphology, function or falls risk. However, none of these trials were adequately powered to detect a “synergistic” effect between the two treatment strategies, but it is likely that if an exercise-by-vitamin D interaction does exist, it may be limited to situations when vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency is corrected. Further targeted research in “high risk” groups is still needed to address this question, and evaluate whether there is a threshold level of serum 25(OH)D to maximize the effects of exercise on muscle and falls risk.
Pharmacogenomics of anticoagulants: steps toward personal dosage

Abstract: Coumarin anticoagulants, including warfarin, are among the most widely prescribed drugs in modern medicine. A difficulty with their use is that dosage needs to be individually determined for each patient, usually by following a standard initial dosing protocol, measuring the coagulation rate regularly (using the international normalized ratio, INR, which is a measure of prothrombin time. A high INR value indicates overcoagulation) and then adjusting the dose until the required rate of coagulation is obtained. Overcoagulation places the patient at risk of potentially fatal hemorrhage, so improving protocols for initiation of anticoagulant treatment remains an important issue. In particular, warfarin has been shown to be frequently implicated in emergency admissions relating to adverse drug reactions in a survey of two UK hospitals [1]. Approximately 10% of Europeans require an unusually low dose of warfarin (1.5 mg/day or less) and these patients could be at increased risk of developing serious bleeds and undesirably high levels of anticoagulation, especially during the initial weeks of treatment [2]. Although the current oral coumarin anticoagulants, such as warfarin, acenocoumarol and phenprocoumon, are likely to be replaced eventually by other drugs under development, such as the specific thrombin inhibitors, the current drugs will probably continue to be the main oral anticoagulants prescribed in the short to medium term.The metabolism of warfarin and the other coumarin anticoagulants is well understood, with the cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP2C9 having a major role in their phase I metabolism (reviewed in [3]). CYP2C9 is subject to a genetic polymorphism affecting its activity, and the fact that this polymorphism contributes to individual anticoagulant dose requirement is now well established, although its effect on phenprocoumon metabolism is less pronounced than that on either warfarin or acenocoumarol [2,4-7]. Abstract: this article points out the relation between the school library and the reader formation as legitimated concepts that support predominant notions. indeed, it supports the conditions that should be assumed by that same relationship for enriching the learning process. in this case, the educative community should be the main participant in this relation. it can create favorable environments, interactions with multiple kinds of texts, new relationships with texts, different kinds of organization, making the process of becoming a reader, knowledge purpose, finally library and teachers, and librarians as mediators.
Vincenzo Scamozzi als Leser der antiken Schriftquellen und Denkm ler: Der "Indice copiosissimo" zu Sebastiano Serlio

Abstract: Already in his early youth Sebastiano Serlio's writings were well-known to Vincenzo Scamozzi. In particular Serlio's third book, dedicated to ancient Roman architecture, and his first two books on geometry and perspective, formed the background to Scamozzi's formation as an architect and theorist. His father Giovan Domenico Scamozzi, a surveyer and architect in Vicenza, played a crucial role in Scamozzi's education. Giovan Domenico compiled the comprehensive index included in Francesco de' Franceschi's new edition of Serlio's Architectura (1584), the "Indice copiosissimo delle cose più degne che si trovano per tutti i sette Libri d'Architettura". Vincenzo edited the index: some entries, those marked by a cross ( ) were to be considered of great importance. Other entries, those marked by a comma (,), refer to comments and additions made by Vincenzo. These texts not only testify to Vincenzo's critical involvement with Serlio's works, but also demonstrate his method of reading and interpreting the sources, material and textual. The article investigates the relationship between the comments in the Indice and Vincenzo's own writings: those on the reconstruction of the baths of Diocletian, the Discorso sopra l'antichità di Roma, the Sommarii od estratti da antichi scrittori delle cose che appartengono alle antichità di Roma, as well as his notes in the margins of the treatises of Lucio Fauno and Daniele Barbaro. This provides a significant insight into the methods of research which led to Scamozzi's opus magnum, the L'idea della architettura universale of 1615.

Abstract: Este artículo discute los conceptos ideológicamente legitimados que dan sustento a las nociones socialmente predominantes acerca de la relación entre formación lectora y biblioteca escolar y, alternativamente, plantea las condiciones que deberían ser asumidas por esa misma relación para que se torne enriquecedora: grosso modo, el sentido de las prácticas que comprometen a la totalidad de la comunidad educativa, la creación de entornos favorables, las interacciones con diversos tipos de texto, las nuevas relaciones con los textos, las formas de organización diferentes, el carácter de los procesos para hacerse lector, el sentido del conocimiento, la biblioteca y los maestros y los bibliotecarios como mediadores. This article points out the relation between the school library and the reader formation as legitimated concepts that support predominant notions. Indeed, it supports the conditions that should be assumed by that same relationship for enriching the learning process.
