Abstract: fifteen intra specific hybrids and two cultivars of elephant grass were evaluated in a randomized block design with four replicates. the experiment was carried out at the forage production section of lzna/ccta of universidade estadual do norte fluminense, campos dos goytacazes, rj, from february/95 to december/97, resulting on 12 harvests. the materials were evaluated for total dry matter (dm) production, dry season production, contribution of dry season to total annual production, percentage of leaves, height (m), diameter of stem at the base (mm) and number of tillers per meter. except for clones cnpgl 91: f28-1, f01-2, f13-2, f10-2 and the mineiro cultivar, all of them were satisfactory for total dry matter (dm) production, while dm production during the dry season, contribution of dry season to total annual production and percentage of leaves, presented no significant differences among clones. multivariate analysis indicated the superiority of group 2 (pioneiro e cnpgl 91 f27-5) and 5 (cnpgl 91 f25-3 e cnpgl 91 f06-3) to total dm production, consisting on divergent and highly adapted groups in campos dos goytacazes, rj. the variables: diameter of stem, plant height in cutting at wet season and plant height in cutting an dry season were the most important in order to explain the dispersion of clones in bidimensional space.
Effect of mini-sprinkler irrigation system on Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7 (Nematoda: Heterorhabditidae) infective juvenile

Abstract: entomopathogenic nematodes (epns) are currently being used as successful biological control agents of soil-dwelling insect pests. previous field and greenhouse studies demonstrated that application techniques and non-biotic factors (temperature and pressure) have a significant effect on epns efficacy. the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of an irrigation spray application system on the viability, infectivity and host search capability of heterorhabditis baujardi lpp7 (nematoda: heterorhabditidae) infective juveniles (ij). two assays were proposed. their viability was evaluated under the microscope after the ij passed through the irrigation system. infectivity on galleria mellonella larvae, and host search capability, as evidenced by larval mortality, were evaluated in containers (experiment 1). in the field (experiment 2), mortality of g. mellonella larvae was evaluated under different nematode concentrations (0, 100,000, 300,000 and 500,000 ij per tree). no differences were recorded on the viability, infectivity and host search capability of the ij in experiment 1. in experiment 2, differences were recorded among the different concentrations used (p < 0.05), and a higher mortality was observed at the highest nematode concentration (28.3% and 37% in each one of the two experiment repetitions). this irrigation system did not affected adversely the viability, infectivity and host search capability of h. baujardi lpp7.

Abstract: Quinze novos clones de capim-elefante e duas cultivares-testemunhas foram avaliados em um delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repeti es. O experimento foi realizado no Setor de Forragicultura do LZNA/CCTA da Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense, Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, no período de fevereiro de 1995 a dezembro de 1997, totalizando 12 cortes. Avaliaram-se produ o de matéria seca (MS), em kg/ha/corte, média de 12 cortes; produ o de MS da época da seca, em kg/ha; participa o da produ o da época da seca em rela o ao total anual, propor o de folhas na planta, altura das plantas (m), diametro do colmo na base (mm) e número de perfilhos por metro linear. Com exce o dos clones CNPGL 91: F28-1, F01-2, F13-2 e F10-2 e da cultivar Mineiro, todos os demais destacaram-se quanto à produ o de MS por corte, enquanto as variáveis produ o de MS da época da seca, participa o da produ o da época da seca em rela o ao total anual e propor o de folhas na planta (com base em MS) n o apresentaram diferen as significativas entre os clones avaliados. A análise multivariada demonstrou a superioridade dos clones dos grupos 2 (Pioneiro e CNPGL 91 F27-5) e 5 (CNPGL 91 F25-3 e CNPGL 91 F06-3) para produ o de matéria seca, constituindo-se em grupos contrastantes e altamente adaptados às condi es edafoclimáticas de Campos dos Goytacazes. As variáveis diametro do colmo, altura das plantas no corte na época das águas e altura das plantas no corte na época da seca foram consideradas as mais importantes para explicar a dispers o dos clones no plano bidimensional.
Genetic divergence among elephantgrass cultivars assessed by RAPD markers in composit samples

Abstract: elephantgrass (pennisetum purpureum schum.) is native to regions of tropical africa and was introduced in brazil around 1920 through plantings imported from cuba. it is currently one of the most widespread forage plants throughout the country. at first, there were two cultivars, napier and mercker, with well defined characteristics. new genotypes arose and it is believed that the large number of cultivars existing today in germplasm bank is due to duplicates. dna markers for cultivar characterization are a very valuable tool, especially in situations where morphological and isoenzymatic markers have already been used as in the case of elephantgrass. thus rapd markers were used to estimate the genetic divergence among the napier group elephantgrass cultivars from the elephantgrass active germplasm bank at embrapa dairy cattle. the polymerase chain reaction with 37 arbitrary primers from the operon technologies series supplied 94 polymorphic and 73 monomorphic bands. from the matrix of complement of the nei index, cluster analysis by the tocher optimization method formed three clusters. pearson correlation among genetic distance estimates obtained from the dna markers and the isoenzymatic markers showed the consistency of both the methods in assessing genetic divergence among elephantgrass cultivars. no duplicates were found in the treatments assessed.

Abstract: Objetivou-se estimar a capacidade geral de combina o (CGC) e a capacidade específica de combina o (CEC) de dez características morfoagron micas, por meio de cruzamentos dialélicos entre onze genótipos de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) e doze de milheto (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) utilizando o método 4 domodelo proposto por Griffing (1956). Os 132 híbridos interespecíficos foram avaliados no delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com três repeti es de tratamentos, de mar o de 2001 a abril de 2002, na Embrapa Gado de Leite, Coronel Pacheco, Estado de Minas Gerais.Observou-se variabilidade genética nitidamente superior entre os genitores de capimelefante. Desse modo, convém frisar que a estratégia de melhoramento intra-específico, principalmente em capim-elefante, poderá proporcionar maiores ganhos para a maioria dascaracterísticas do que a praticada de forma interespecífica. As melhores combina es híbridas para produ o de forragem, tanto da planta integral, quanto da fra o foliar, foram BAG-64 x Wrajpop 88, BAG-64 x HiGrop, BAG-19 x BN 2 e BAG-19 x NPM 1. This work aimed to estimate general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) in ten morphoagronomic characteristics through diallel crossing among eleven elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) and twelve pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) genotypes using the method 4, Griffing (1956) model. The 132 interespecific hybrids were evaluated in a complete randomized block design, with three replications, from march of 2001 to april of 2002, in Embrapa Gado de Leite, Coronel Pacheco, Minas Gerais State. The genetic variability was superior in elephantgrass genitors, so that intraspecific breeding, mainly in elephantgrass, can result in greater gains to almost all characteristics than to intraspecific mode. The best hybrid combinations to forage production, both in integral plant and in leaf fraction, were BAG-64x Wrajpop 88, BAG-64 x HiGrop, BAG-19 x BN 2, and BAG-19 x NPM 1.

Abstract: Cento e trinta e dois híbridos interespecíficos obtidos por cruzamentos dialélicos entre onze genótipos de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) e doze de milheto (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) foram avaliados em blocos ao acaso, com três repeti es de tratamentos, de mar o de 2001 a abril de 2002, na Embrapa Gado de Leite, Coronel Pacheco, Estado de Minas Gerais. Objetivou-se estimar a capacidade geral de combina o (CGC) e a capacidade específica de combina o (CEC) de oito características bromatológicas, utilizando o método 4 do modelo proposto por Griffing (1956). Verificou se que, para a característica percentagem de proteína bruta, n o foi detectada variabilidade genética entre os genitores. Os cruzamentos F94-28-3 x ICMV 87901, F92-97-3 x ICMV 87901, F93-4-2 x Wrajpop 88, F92-101-2 x ICMV 221, F92-101-2 x Senpop e F93-4-2 x NPM 1 destacaram-se com rela o às características relacionadas com a digestibilidade da forragem, aliadas a reduzidos teores de fibra, principalmente a mais insolúvel (%FDA). One hundred-thirty-two interespecific hybrids obtained through dialel cross among eleven elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) and twelve pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) genotypes were evaluated in a complete randomized block design, with three replications, from march of 2001 to april of 2002, in Embrapa Gado de Leite, Coronel Pacheco, Minas Gerais State. This work aimed to estimate the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) in eight bromatologic characteristics using the method 4, Griffing (1956) model. There was not genetic variability among parents, considering crude protein percentage characteristic. F94-28-3 x ICMV 87901, F92-97-3 x ICMV 87901, F93-4-2 x Wrajpop 88, F92-101-2 x ICMV 221, F92-101-2 x Senpop, and F93-4-2 x NPM 1 crosses were better considering forage digestibility characteristics, as reduced percentage of fibers, mainly the insoluble (%ADF).

DNA markers for cultivar characterization are a very valuable tool, especially in situations where morphological and isoenzymatic markers have already been used as in the case of elephantgrass. Thus RAPD markers were used to estimate the genetic divergence among the Napier group elephantgrass cultivars from the elephantgrass Active Germplasm Bank at EMBRAPA Dairy Cattle. The polymerase chain reaction with 37 arbitrary primers from the OPERON Technologies series supplied 94 polymorphic and 73 monomorphic bands. From the matrix of complement of the Nei index, cluster analysis by the Tocher optimization method formed three clusters. Pearson correlation among genetic distance estimates obtained from the DNA markers and the isoenzymatic markers showed the consistency of both the methods in assessing genetic divergence among elephantgrass cultivars. No duplicates were found in the treatments assessed.
Análise de trilha de caracteres forrageiros do capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.)

Abstract: Os objetivos deste trabalho consistiram em obter estimativas de coeficientes de correla o fenotípicos, genotípicos e residuais, e avaliar os desdobramentos das correla es genotípicas em efeitos diretos e indiretos (análise de trilha) das variáveis altura média das plantas, diametro médio do colmo e número de perfilhos por metro linear (variáveis independentes explicativas) na produ o de matéria seca (variável dependente principal) de clones de capim-elefante em dois cortes realizados nas condi es edafoclimáticas do norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Houve grande diferen a nas estimativas obtidas nos dois cortes, entretanto o estudo permitiu concluir que a altura das plantas no corte exerce influência na produ o de matéria seca principalmente nas situa es de clones de alta capacidade de perfilhamento. As características número de perfilhos por metro linear e diametro de perfilhos foram capazes de explicar melhor o potencial de produ o de matéria seca, atuando, respectivamente, de forma direta e inversamente proporcionais sobre a variável básica, alternando-se em fun o das condi es ambientais ocorridas durante o crescimento.

Abstract: this work aimed to evaluate the height and root collar diameter effects of the hybrid eucalyptus grandis x e. urophylla cuttings on the growth after planting in the aracruz-es, mucuri-ba, montanha-es and carlos chagas-mg sites. the selected classes were: high cuttings with thick root collar diameter (ag), high cuttings with averaged size diameter (am), average height with thick diameter ( mg), average height and average diameter (mm) , low cutting with average size diameter (pm) and low cutting with fine diameter roots (pf). the values of the classes were: height- a (31-40 cm), m (21-30 cm) and p (10-20 cm); root collar diameter- g (3.1-4.0 cm), m (2.1-3.0 mm) and f (1.5-2.0 mm). the cuttings, 90 days after transplanting to tubes, were taken as hardened and outplanted. the evaluations were in height (a), diameters (d) were measured at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 12th months. leaf dry mass, wood, bark, branches and fine, average size and thick roots were evaluated at the 6th month. higher and thicker cutting presented higher initial growth, although the differences showed decreasing values over time. carlos chagas showed the worst growth conditions.

Abstract: fourteen clones and three cultivars of elephant grass were evaluated in a randomized block experimental design with four repetitions. the objective of this study was to estimate stability parameters related to dry matter (dm) production in kg/ha.cut, based in methodologies of plaisted & peterson (1959), lin & binns (1988) and kang (1988), resulted of twelve cuts (as environments). the clone cnpgl 91 f11-2 and pioneiro cultivar presented high stability and production based in these methodologies, consisting in satisfactory genetic materials adapted to campos dos goytacazes, rj conditions.
