Los servicios de suministros de los establecimientos sanitarios: la medición de la performance
Dacosta Claro,Iván;
Revista Espa?ola de Salud Pública , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1135-57272001000400006
Abstract: performance measurement, in their different meanings -either balance scorecard or outputs measurement- have become an essential tool in today?s organizations (world-class organizations) to improve service quality and reduce costs. this paper presents a performance measurement system for the hospital supply chain. the system is organized in different levels and groups of indicators in order to show a hierarchical, coherent and integrated vision of the processes. thus, supply services performance is measured according to (1) financial aspects, (2) customers satisfaction aspects and (3) internal aspects of the processes performed. since the informational needs of the managers vary within the administrative structure, the performance measurement system is defined in three hierarchical levels. firstly, the whole supply chain, with the different interrelation of activities. secondly, the three main processes of the chain -physical management of products, purchasing and negotiation processes and the local storage units. and finally, the performance measurement of each activity involved. the system and the indicators have been evaluated with the participation of 17 health services of quebec (canada), however, and due to the similarities of the operation, could be equally implemented in spanish hospitals.

An Investigation into the Questionable Practice of Using Excessive Massively Multiplayer Online Game Play as a Marker of Pathological Video Game Dependence among Adolescent and Young Adult Male Players  [PDF]
Soonhwa Seok, Boaventura DaCosta
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2014.54039
Abstract:

The present study explored pathological online video game dependence among adolescent and young adult males in the context of excessive massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) play. Psychological criteria distinguishing high engagement from addiction were used, as a means of examining MMOG play in the context of an excessive and addictive activity. This is a distinction that has been lost in the previous research, setting this study apart from other studies investigating frequency of play in the context of video game addiction. A total of 1121 male students in grades 7 through 12 across 12 schools in and around Seoul, South Korea, participated. The study used a 65-item questionnaire developed to examine constructs related to online video game play. Findings revealed no statistically significant differences between those classified as addicted and those classified as highly engaged with regard to items designed to measure frequency of MMOG play. Furthermore, in comparison to those classified as addicted, those classified as highly engaged reported a higher average number of hours per week they felt was an acceptable amount of time dedicated to game play. All in all, the findings revealed that those classified as highly engaged spent a significant portion of their time playing in massively multiplayer online worlds alongside those classified as addicted. These findings help illustrate the difficulties in using frequency of online video game play, even if viewed as excessive, as a criterion for identifying pathological dependence.

The unerupted maxillary canine -A review of literature
OO daCosta
Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice , 2002,
Abstract: Objective: To compare the effectiveness of topical fluoride application and fluoride The purpose of this paper is to bring about a better appreciation of causative factors and those influencing management decisions of the unerupted maxillary canine. It reviews current literature of the anomaly of the unerupted maxillary canine, which is one of the most frequently displaced teeth in the maxillary arch. Aetiological factors of this anomaly are widely varied and include advanced state of development at an early age, trauma, dentoalveolar disproportion, absence or reduction in size of the upper lateral incisor and genetics. The possible complications of canine impaction are also discussed. Methods of assessing the unerupted canine both clinically and radiographically are highlighted along with ways of predicting and preventing the anomaly. Finally it details management of the problem including factors to be taken into consideration prior to treatment and the various treatment options available to date. The need for early assessment of patients presenting in the dental clinic cannot be over-emphasized in the possible prevention of this anomaly. The observation of one or more of the possible causative factors as well as delayed eruption of the permanent canine or prolonged retention of its predecessor should also be cause for further investigation. Choice of the various treatment options available is dependent on a number of factors including patient`s attitude, the position of the unerupted tooth relative to the standing teeth as well as the present occlusion of the patient. This report describes misdiagnosis of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid as chronic conjunctivitis. Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid is a rare autoimmune condition. The clinical features which are useful to distinguish this condition from infective conjunctivitis are discussed. The investigation and treatment of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid is discussed. It is important to recognize nonocular symptoms and signs that may indicate the presence of a more serious underlying pathological condition necessitating specialized ophthalmic referral and subsequent investigation and treatment.
Popular Architecture and Its Authors: Aesthetics and Dialectics in the Quarry of Nuez de Aliste, Zamora
Dacosta, Arsenio
Revista de Dialectología y Tradiciones Populares , 2008,
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to help dismiss one of the most widely-held beliefs about traditional culture: its supposedly anonymous and non-written character. By analyzing the work of stonemasons in a village of the province of Zamora, Spain, the author brings to the surface the dialectic that obtains between author and product within traditional culture. He explores the iconographic and textual expressions of a number of works of stonemasonry. Textual expressions are particularly rich in the forms adopted: dates, initials, mottos. Although the instances are local, the author reveals the larger extension of this type of writing, which carries strong identity and property overtones.
LICEOS BOLIVARIANOS, CONSEJOS COMUNALES Y TRABAJO LIBERADOR.
Dacosta, O.
CONHISREMI , 2009,
Abstract: A study about the development in the educational environment, at any level, is vitall for any government which claims to strengthen education as an instrument of liberation. It is not enough the use of meaningless slogans or which is even worst, doing nothing in the daily reality we experiment in our schools. The objective is to drive the liberating contend in the New Curriculum Design, make them known, defend and taken them in a way that we become examples to follow by our colleagues and students. In relation with these ideas I think that the unfinished tasks (traditional school) and the new ones (innovative school) should be managed from community organizations (Consejos Comunales) with the activation and integration of plans that allow teachers to expand the creative potential of students, parents and representatives of the educational community. According to my opinion, that would be the essence of a new socialist state. For that reason, it is necessary to offer an education to and for the liberating work as a transforming element of the work value in students and, at the same time with this offering, to make students develop new qualities for a satisfactory integration in Consejos Comunales.

Towards Reasoning About Properties of Imperative Programs using Linear Logic
Daniel DaCosta
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: In this paper we propose an approach to reasoning about properties of imperative programs. We assume in this context that the meanings of program constructs are described using rules in the natural semantics style with the additional observation that these rules may involve the treatment of state. Our approach involves modeling natural semantics style rules within a logic and then reasoning about the behavior of particular programs by reasoning about proofs in that logic. A key aspect of our proposal is to use a fragment of linear logic called Lolli (invented by Hodas and Miller) to model natural semantics style descriptions. Being based on linear logic, Lolli can provide logical expression to resources such as state. Lolli additionally possesses proof-theoretic properties that allow it to encode natural semantics style descriptions in such a way that proofs in Lolli mimic the structure of derivations based on the natural semantics rules. We will discuss these properties of Lolli and demonstrate how they can be exploited in modeling the semantics of imperative programs and in reasoning about such models.
A Systematic Review of Empirically Based Universal Design for Learning: Implementation and Effectiveness of Universal Design in Education for Students with and without Disabilities at the Postsecondary Level  [PDF]

Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2018.65014
Abstract: This systematic review explored methods of UDL implementation for postsecondary students with and without disabilities and the degree to which these methods are effective. The authors examined 17 empirically based studies published across 12 journals focused on the application of UDL principles. The studies were analyzed with regard to 1) participant information, 2) courses and delivery mode, 3) independent and dependent variables, 4) implementation strategies, and 5) effectiveness of implementation. The analysis revealed that 15 of the studies reported effective outcomes, one study resulted in blended effects, and one did not discuss implementation. Two studies used a blended delivery mode for special education courses, and four studies used online delivery modes for a teacher education course and three professional development programs. Other studies used face-to-face instruction for teacher education, general courses, and workshops. The most common independent variables were UDL principle-based course design and implementation, followed by hands-on activities, training of instructors, peer-led team learning, and a collaborative professional development model. The dependent variables included course evaluation, learning outcomes, such as revision of lesson plans and technology use, and level of confidence or acquisition of knowledge about UDL and disabilities. Finally, multiple instructional strategies focusing on the UDL principles were utilized, to include web-based computer-mediated communication, web-based class management systems, interactions with technology and other participants, and learning community. Overall, the findings revealed promising learning outcomes as supported by the existing literature regarding the effectiveness and practicality of UDL for students with and without disabilities at the postsecondary level.
