Identification of active components of sex pheromone for Sidemia depravata and field trapping

Abstract: (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (A) and (Z, E)-9, 12-tetracecadienylacetate (B) were found in sex pheromone gland extracts of female lawn grass cutworm(LGCW), Sidemia depravata, with single gland extract technique by gas chromatography. Field trapping tests were conducted in tall fescue fields in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province of eastern China. Baits containing components A and B in 5 different ratios were tested in the fields for evaluating their attractiveness to male LGCW. Water pool traps with red septa containing 5:5 and 6:4 of A and B caught significantly more male LGCW than traps containing 9:1, 8:2 or 7:3 of A and B.
Effects of deltamethrin on pheromone perception in male Asian corn borer(Ostrinia furnacalis)

Abstract: To investigate the effects of deltamethrin on male Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis) to perceive sex pheromone, the electro-physiological and behavioral response of topically treated male Asian corn borer to sex pheromone were tested with EAG sets and wind tunnel. The results showed that the summit response of male moths to varied ratios of pheromone blends was at E/Z = 1/9, 5/5 and 9/1, which was similar to that of control, but the EAG values were only 0.25 mV to 0.45 mV, which were significant lower than control by 0.15 mV to 0.35 mV. The low threshold dose of pheromone for treated males to perception was 1 ng, and the highest was 10,000 ng, which was also similar to control, but low by 0.1 mV to 0.5 mV in EAG values. This suggested that deltamethrin mainly affected the sensibility of peripheral reception system, while the preliminary recognition to the ratio of pheromone blends by peripheral reception system are not disturbed heavily. In wind tunnel test, a relative higher amount of males shifted to response to pheromone with E/Z ratios of 7/3 from E/Z = 1/1 of control males, and keep on response at this level to blends with more E12-14: OAc. The lowest dosage of pheromone effectively elicited response of males also shifted from 10 ng to 100 ng, and the highest doses for response declined to about 50,000 ng from 100,000 ng of control, which might result in a narrower band of effective doses. It is suggested that the sublethal dosage of deltamethrin not only affected the sensibility of male moth to perceive the pheromone, but also affected the specificity of pheromone perception.
Analysis and identification of Liriomyza sativae-attractants from cowpea and kidney bean volatiles

Abstract: In this paper, the volatiles from cowpea and kidney bean, the main host plants of American leafminer Liriomyza sativae, were collected and extracted by a self-designed device and solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique, and analyzed by GC-MS. The results showed that the volatiles from the two beans had the same components mainly consisted of 2-hexenal, 3-Hexen-1-ol, 2-Hexen-1-ol, 1-Octen-3-ol, 3-Hexenol acetate, alpha-Ionone and beta-Ionone. The lure made of the seven components was attractive to L. sativae in field trapping trials. Detailed analyses indicated that alpha-Ionone and beta-Ionone might play important roles in the searching behavior of L. sativae for host plants.

Abstract: Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), are common disorders of the central nervous system among aging populations. In the last 10 years insights concerning the etiology, diagnosis and pathogenesis of these diseases have come from research carried out by Chinese neuroscientists. Their findings include the description of Chinese patients with autosomal recessive early-onset PD, the function of the tau protein, molecular mechanisms underlying protein aggregation, and the identification of biomarkers for AD diagnosis and molecules/compounds with potential neuroprotective activities.

QED Test at LEP200 Energies in the Reaction $\rm e^+ e^-\to γγ (γ)$

Abstract: The measurements of the QED reaction $ \EEGG $ performed with the L3 detector are used to search for new physics phenomena beyond the Standard Model. No evidence for these phenomena is found and new limits on their parameters are set. First the reaction is used to constrain a model of an excited electron and second to study contact interactions. The total and differential cross sections for the process $ \EEGG $, are measured at energies from 91 GeV to 202 GeV using the data collected with the L3 detector from 1991 to 1999. The L3 data set lower limits on the mass of an excited electron $ \MESTAR > 402 $ GeV, on the QED cutoff parameters $ \LAMP > 415 $ GeV, $ \LAMM > 258 $ GeV and on the contact interaction energy scale $ \Lambda > 1687 $ GeV. The last parameter limits the size of the interaction area to $ R < 1.17\times 10^{-17} $ cm. Some limits on the string and quantum gravity scales are also discussed.
An Improved Procedure for Selecting the Profiles of Perfectly Matched Layers

Abstract: The perfectly matched layers (PMLs), as a boundary termination over an unbounded spatial domain, are widely used in numerical simulations of wave propagation problems. Given a set of discretization parameters, a procedure to select the PML profiles based on minimizing the discrete reflectivity is established for frequency domain simulations. We, by extending the function class and adopting a direct search method, improve the former procedure for traveling waves.
On Equilibria of N-seller and N-buyer Bargaining Games

Abstract: A group of players that contains n sellers and n buyers bargain over the partitions of n pies. A seller(/buyer) has to reach an agreement with a buyer (/seller) on the division of a pie. The players bargain in a system like the stock market: each seller(buyer) can either offer a selling(buying) price to all buyers(sellers) or accept a price offered by another buyer(seller). The offered prices are known to all. Once a player accepts a price offered by another one, the division of a pie between them is determined. Each player has a constant discounting factor and the discounting factors of all players are common knowledge. In this article, we prove that the equilibrium of this bargaining problem is a unanimous division rate that is exactly equivalent to Nash bargaining equilibrium of a two-player bargaining game in which the discounting factors of two players are the average of n buyers and the average of n sellers respectively. This result is nontrivial for studying general equilibrium of markets.

Abstract: Field D* algorithm is widely used in mobile robot navigation since it can plan and replan any-angle paths through non-uniform cost grids. However, it still suffers from inefficiency and sub-optimality. In this article, a new linear interpolation-based planning and replanning algorithm, Update-Reducing Field D*, is proposed. It employs different approaches during initial planning and replanning respectively in order to reduce the number of updates of the rhs-values of vertices. Experiments have shown that Update-Reducing Field D* runs faster than Field D* and returns smoother and lower-cost paths.
Intralesional pingyangmycin injection sclerotherapy for oral ranulas  [PDF]

Objective: To investigate the efficiency of pingyangmycin (PYM) intralesional injection for the treatment of ranulas in clinical practice. Methods: PYM concentrations were 2.0 mg/ml (8 mg PYM powder + 1 ml normal saline + 2 ml 2% lidocaine + 1 ml dexamethasone). The mixed PYM solution was intralesional injected into ranulas after drawing out isometric cyst fluid in 3 patients. Results: The ranulas of 3 patients showed total disappearance after the sclerotherapy, and no recurrence was found after 6 months to 3 years’ follow-up. Compared to surgical therapy, the PYM sclerotherapy was advocated by clinicians for its advantages of less injury, no scar, less suffering, etc. Conclusions: PYM is an effective sclerosing agent for ranulas. Intracystic injection of PYM may be an optimal method for the treatment of ranulas.
