Abstract: Neptune Canada is the first marine observation network system. It is to cover the Juan de Faca Plate of the whole northeast Pacific Ocean region and thus will turn over a new page in the earth science research. Through the main arterial photo-electric cable, it connects instruments and equipment at five nodes and makes long-term real-time observation at sea bottom. With a strong data management and filing system, it transmits observation data in a real-time way for scientists and science enthusiasts to use free of charge. Canadian submarine observation technology is mainly applied in such aspects as detecting submarine volcanic activities, monitoring seismic and tsunami activities of this region constantly, probing into minerals, metals and hydrocarbon resources, deeply studying interaction between ocean and atmosphere, understanding the cyclic process of marine hothouse gas, exploring the secrets of marine ecological system and investigating problems like the marine periodic changes, the creation and regeneration of energy resources, the marine mammal community, the storage of marine fishery, and the pollution and toxic spread.
Erythroblastic Islands in the Bone Marrow of Patients with Immune-Related Pancytopenia

Abstract: Background Immune-related pancytopenia (IRP) is characterized by pancytopenia caused by autoantibody-mediated bone marrow destruction or suppression. The bone marrows of IRP patients have remarkably increased erythroblastic islands (EIs). Methodology and Principal Findings We determined the immunoglobulin G (IgG) autoantibodies in some parts of EIs of IRP patients using immunofluorescence to investigate the biological function of EIs with IgG in the pathophysiology of IRP. The dominant class of autoantibodies detected in mononuclear cells was IgG (CD34 IgG, CD15 IgG, and GlycoA IgG), specifically IgG on GlycoA-positive cells (GlycoA IgG). Results show that extravascular hemolysis occurred in IRP through IgG autoantibodies in the EIs. These data included a high percentage of reticulocytes in the peripheral blood, hypererythrocytosis in the bone marrow, and high serum bilirubin. Furthermore, we examined the macrophages in the bone marrow of IRP patients. The results show that the number of activated macrophages relatively increased, and the phagocytic activity of macrophages significantly increased. Conclusions and Significance Increased EIs with IgG were the sites of erythroblast phagocytosis by the activated macrophages, rather than erythropoietic niches. The IgG autoantibodies in the EIs possibly functioned as adhesion molecules for a ring of erythroblasts around the macrophages, thereby forming morphologic EIs.
Quaternary Activity and Segmentation Behavior of the Middle Portion of the Tan-Lu Fault Zone

Abstract: The Tan-Lu fault zone is one of the major lithospheric discontinuities in eastern China. The middle portion of this fault zone in Shandong and Jiangsu provinces was subjected to strong right-lateral reactivation during Neotectonic era, forming a conspicuous transpressional strike-slip boundary in North China.Based on field observations together with TM imagery interpretation and focal mechanism solutions of earthquakes, this paper describes Quaternary active features and segmentation behavior of the Tan-Lu fault zone. It is pointed out that the middle portion of the Tan-Lu fault zone can be divided into three main segments, i.e., the Anqiu-Maobu segment, the Wanghu-Suqian segment and the Suqian-Jiashan segment in southward succession, and each of them might be ruptured independently. Quaternary strike-slip faulting is prevalent along the central and northern segments, north of Suqian, where two strong historical earthquakes once occurred, whereas the faulting weakens along the southern segment in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces. This along-strike segmentation behavior of the Neotectonic activity of the Tan-Lu fault zone accommodated book-shelf motion of blocks in North China.

Abstract: To understand the mechanism of the ecological engineering way for controlling Spatina alterniflora, a typical wetland in the core area of Yancheng Nature Reserve was chosen as a reference to study its natural succession. By employing a space-for-time substitution approach,a succession sequence of time series was built. After analyzing the data of related environmental factors with the method of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), three principal components were obtained. Through multiple linear regression analysis, a succession model of coastal wetland ecosystem was built up using the three principal components we got as parameters to study how environmental factors function in succession process. The model showed that in the nature succession process of coastal wetland vegetation, moisture, salinity, and soil nutrients all had played important roles, so as competition between species and different factors had different impacts on different succession stages. As a reference wetland, this study could help us to evaluate the degradation of wetland and the effect of wetland restoration,as well as to help us to achieve the balance of utilization and reservation.
CAGS Quick Response to and Geoscientific Survey on May 12 Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract: Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS) quickly analyzed tectonic and geodynamic cause of the earthquake and organized survey on seismic fractures and geological hazards caused by the earthquake after the Wenchuan Ms 8.0 Earthquake occurred on May 12th, 2008, followed by selection of sites for scientific drilling of seismic faults, field studies on active faults and seismic deformation, in-situ stress measurement of the seismic zone, survey and assessment on geological hazards and landslide dams triggered by the earthquake. Six geologists of CAGS joined National Experts Committee of the Wenchuan Earthquake, published Atlas of Geological Hazards of Wenchuan Earthquake, and held a workshop on geodynamic cause of the Wenchuan earthquake. Two experts joined the Rescue Direction Department of the Ministry of Land and Resources for the Wenchuan Earthquake. CAGS also organized oral reports and large-scale exhibition of the Wenchuan Earthquake in the 33rd International Geological Congress, which attracted attention of international geoscientific society. Scientists of CAGS submitted a proposal for scientific drilling of Wenchuan earthquake faults and got quick reply from Premier Wen Jiabao and vice premiers of China, and an opening ceremony for the first drilling of the Wenchuan earthquake fault had been held on November 6th, 2008. CAGS concentrated scientists for studying geological hazards and seismic geology after accepted research projects related to Wenchuan Earthquake.

Abstract: 大巴山是NWW_SEE走向的中央造山带中惟一的向南凸出大型弧型褶皱带,与秦岭—大别造山带的构造特征明显不协调。研究表明,大巴山弧型构造卷入了侏罗纪地层,因此不属于三叠纪中央造山带。秦岭、大别山和大巴山最新的证据证实侏罗纪曾经发生陆内俯冲作用,大巴山是侏罗纪陆内造山作用的产物。大巴山西侧为典型的叠加褶皱变形样式,三叠纪近东西向褶皱叠加上近南北向褶皱构成横跨型干涉变形图像。由此,确立了侏罗纪复合前陆的存在,证明中国东部甚至亚洲东部侏罗纪陆内造山的广泛性,晚侏罗世的“燕山运动”是波及亚洲中东部的重要构造事件。

Abstract: The 31th Session of the International Geological Congress-31th IGC-held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 6 to 17 of 2000. About 3 705 geologists from 103 countries and areas are attended this Congress. The theme of the 31th IGC is Geology and Sutainable Development: Challenges for the Third Millennium. More then 180 geologists consisting China delegation are presented and jointed exchange in different fields and subjects during the IGC. Fortunately, authors followed the China delegation to Rio de Janeiro, and here would like to talk on the development tendency and facing challenge of geological sciences in 21 century according to our feeling and exchange date for discussion with our colleagues. This paper mentioned briefly the development features during past 100 years and emphasized the technology play an important role in pushing progression of geological sciences; offer some tasks facing new century of geological sciences as following as: supply mineral resources sutainablly, shortage of water resources, reducing nature hazards and service society and police.
