Adsorption Application for Removal of Hazardous Chloroform from Aqueous Solution by Nanocomposites Rectorite/Chitosan Adsorbent  [PDF]

Abstract: A novel nanocomposite bioadsorbent rectorite/chitosan was prepared by controlling different mass ratios of chitosan to rectorite using the water phase intercalation technique. The structure of the bioadsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The results showed that the chitosan had been inserted into the rectorite layer successfully. The adsorption properties of the nanocomposite adsorbent toward CHCl3 from aqueous solution were investigated. Adsorption results showed that both nanocomposite adsorbents with weight ratio of rectorite to chitosan of 3:1 and 5:1 exhibited higher adsorption capacities.

Abstract: Algae growth is affected by both their physiological characteristics and the external driving factors, including light, temperature and nutrients. The nutrients released from sediment resuspension under hydrodynamic forces, impose significant effects on algae growth. In this study, an experiment of Taihu algal dynamics under different simulated hydrodynamic conditions was carried out in an ecologic tank. The experiment was conducted using water and sediments collected from Taihu under three different hydrodynamic conditions: static, slow water flow, and fast water flow. Based on the experimental data, an algal growth model was developed using the PHREEQC simulating package and incorporating observed biochemical and ecological kinetics. Quantitative relations between the releases of nitrogen/phosphorus nutrients and the water flow velocity were incorporated in the model based on the results from laboratory experiments of nutrient release from sediments in an annular tank. Detailed calibration and verification of the model parameters were carried out based on the experimental results. The calculated values fitted well with the data, suggesting that the developed model represents the dynamic growth of algae reasonably well. This model may be used to study the mechanisms of algae bloom in Taihu.

Abstract: In this study, a novel flocculant was prepared by an inorganic polymetric flocculant (IPF) - polysilicate ferro- aluminum sulfate (PSFA) and rectorite (REC). The structure of the PSFA-REC composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD), in order to determine the optimal temperature. The flocculation test was made at 25℃, 45℃ and 65℃, the results indicated that when the temperature was 65℃, the removal efficiency of the oil and COD was the best, which was 87.2% and 92.6% respectively. Then by comparisons among rectorite (REC), PSFA and the composite PSFA-REC at the temperature of 65℃ and the optimal dosage of 11 mg/L, the composite PSFA-REC showed better flocculation performance than flocculant REC and PSFA alone.

Transmit Delay Structure Design for Blind Channel Estimation over Multipath Channels

Abstract: Wireless communications often exploit guard intervals between data blocks to reduce interblock interference in frequency-selective fading channels. Here we propose a dual-branch transmission scheme that utilizes guard intervals for blind channel estimation and equalization. Unlike existing transmit diversity schemes, in which different antennas transmit delayed, zero-padded, or time-reversed versions of the same signal, in the proposed transmission scheme, each antenna transmits an independent data stream. It is shown that for systems with two transmit antennas and one receive antenna, as in the case of one transmit antenna and two receive antennas, blind channel estimation and equalization can be carried out based only on the second-order statistics of symbol-rate sampled channel output. The proposed approach involves no preequalization and has no limitations on channel-zero locations. Moreover, extension of the proposed scheme to systems with multiple receive antennas and/or more than two transmit antennas is discussed. It is also shown that in combination with the threaded layered space-time (TST) architecture and turbo coding, significant improvement can be achieved in the overall system performance.

The Rigidity Theorems of Self Shrinkers via Gauss maps

Abstract: We study the rigidity results for self-shrinkers in Euclidean space by restriction of the image under the Gauss map. The geometric properties of the target manifolds carry into effect. In the self-shrinking hypersurface situation Theorem 3.1 and Theorem 3.2 not only improve the previous results, but also are optimal. In higher codimensional case, using geometric properties of the Grassmanian manifolds (the target manifolds of the Gauss map) we give a rigidity theorem for self-shrinking graphs.
Histidine-Mediated pH-Sensitive Regulation of M-Ficolin:GlcNAc Binding Activity in Innate Immunity Examined by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract: M-ficolin, a pathogen recognition molecule in the innate immune system, binds sugar residues including N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc), which is displayed on invading microbes and on apoptotic cells. The cis and trans Asp282-Cys283 peptide bond in the M-ficolin, which was found to occur at neutral and acidic pH in crystal structures, has been suggested to represent binding and non-binding activity, respectively. A detailed understanding of the pH-dependent conformational changes in M-ficolin and pH-mediated discrimination mechanism of GlcNAc-binding activity are crucial to both immune-surveillance and clearance of apoptotic cells.
