Iatreia , 2002,
Glucose is the main energy supply for the cell and requires a transport protein to enter through cell membranes. Two monosacharid transport systems have been described: SGLT (sodium-glucose transporters) and GLUT (glucose transporters). In this article we review the main molecular, biochemical and functional characteristics of these monosacharid transporters.

Abstract:

Choroidal osteoma (CO) is a rare, ossifying benign tumor originated in the choroid that typically occurs in otherwise healthy young women (1,2). It is characterized by a yellowish, well demarcated lesion in the juxtapapillary or macular area. The diagnosis is clinical and can be confirmed with the use of fluorescein or indocyanine angiography, optical coherence tomography, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Choroidal neovascularization or subretinal fluid, the main causes for vision loss, can be treated with laser therapy, photodynamic therapy or intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor therapy. We present a case of choroidal osteoma, showing the role of the high resolution 3D spiral computed tomography.

Importancia del caos determinista en medicina Importance of deterministic chaos in medicine
Luis Carlos Burgos Herrera
Iatreia , 1994,
The unpredictability of systems, including those ruled by deterministic laws, is known as deterministic chaos. In this article some historical aspects, characteristics and methods of study of this concept are briefly described. The advantages of chaotic rhythm for physiological systems are summarized and the implications of ubicuity of chaos in human physiology for the definitions of hea1th and disease are reviewed.

Abstract: introduction: information on the relationship between treatment failure in malaria and factors of the host (nutritional status, phenotype and genotype of cytochrome cyp450) involved in the metabolism of antimalarials is scarce. objective: to explore whether treatment failure of mefloquine administered to patients with noncomplicated falciparum malaria can be explained in terms of the patient?s nutritional status and the cyp3a4 phenotype and genotype. materials and methods: non-matched case-control study. patients were adult males and females, inhabitants of turbo and el bagre (antioquia, colombia). results: the therapeutic response was assessed in 46 patients, and there were only three failures (6.5%); due to the rare occurrence of therapeutic failure (n = 3/46), results are presented in a descriptive way for the 46 patients. the dextrometorphan/3-methoxymorphinan ratio was 0.39 (median); 20% of the patients were slow metabolizers. the blood concentrations of mefloquine at 24 hours (c24h) and at day 14 (cd14) were (median) 1.363 ± 397 ng/ml and 978 ± 106 ng/ml, respectively. all 46 patients had the wild cyp3a4*2 allele. conclusion: we were unable to assess in depth the relationship between the response to mefloquine, on the one hand and, on the other, cyp450 activity and nutritional status. however, there were findings that justify the assessment and control of the characteristics of the host in subsequent studies of antimalarial pharmacokinetics.

Abstract: Spreading sewage sludge from municipal wastewater (MWW) treatment on land is still a common practice in developing countries. However, it is well known that sewage sludge without special treatment contains various pollutants, which are (re)introduced into the environment by sludge landspreading and which might in turn have harmful effects on the environment and human health. This is more dangerous in places like Merida, Mexico, where soil is calcareous with fractures along the ground and thin layers of humus. Consequently, any liquid and semisolid wastes have the potential of percolating to the subsurface and contaminate the aquifer. The main aim of this work was using composting as a low cost process to eliminate pathogens contained in sewage sludge from MWW treatment in order to use the final product for land spreading in a safe way for both environment and human health. Two piles for composting process at real scale were settled using a mixture of sewage sludge from municipal waste water and green waste. Composting was carried out by windrow process and it was monitored during four weeks. Concentration of helminth eggs, salmonella and faecal coliforms were measured twice a week to observe its behavior and, as a control process, Temperature, Moisture Content (MC), and pH were also measured. After 30 days of composting sludge from municipal waste water system, salmonella was eliminated by 99%, faecal coliforms by 96% and helminth eggs by 81%. After 3 months compost reached GI = 160%, so did not show any phytotoxicity to seeds.
