Prevalence and distribution of glaucoma in central India (Glaucoma Survey - 2001)

Abstract: Purpose: A community-based survey was conducted in Rajnandangaon district of Chhattisgarh state of central India in 2001 to assess the prevalence of glaucoma in the age group of =35 years. Design: Community-based cross-sectional survey Materials and Methods: Ophthalmologists measured ocular pressure using Perkins applanation tonometer. Best corrected visual acuity was checked by ETDRS chart. After dilating the pupil the fundus was examined. A sketch diagram was drawn to note glaucomatous changes in optic disc and the surrounding retina. The field of vision was tested on Bjerrum screen. Gonioscopy was performed to determine type of glaucoma. Persons and their relatives were interviewed to find out risk factors and glaucoma treatment in the past. Results: Seven thousand four hundred and thirty-eight (87.3%) persons were examined. The age-sex standardized prevalence of glaucoma was 3.68% (95% CI 3.27 to 4.07). Gender variation of glaucoma was not significant. [OR = 1.13 (CI 95% 0.88 to 1.44)] Glaucoma varied significantly by age groups. (χ2 = 48.2, degree of freedom = 3 P < 0.001) Among those patients diagnosed to suffer from glaucoma, the proportion of open angle, closed angle, secondary glaucoma, ocular hypertension and glaucoma suspects was 13.1%, 21.2%, 21.2%, 14.5% and 30% respectively. Different types of visual disabilities were associated with glaucoma. However, unilateral blindness in glaucoma was unusual. Twenty-five per cent of the glaucoma cases were detected for the first time during the survey. Conclusions: The prevalence of glaucoma was high and the angle closure type was more compared to the open angle glaucoma.

Abstract:

The effects of electric field and ultrasonication on the deposition and alignment of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) across a 10 μm electrode gap have been studied. It was found that a frequency of ~1 MHz of the applied field yields the largest current independent of the magnitude of the voltage or the ultrasonication time of the sample. Increasing the ultrasonication time of a SWCNT solution changes the I-V characteristics of the deposited nanotubes from linear to nonlinear for all the voltages and frequencies of the applied field. Even in the absence of an electric field, SWCNTs bridged the electrode gap up to a critical sonication time which depends on the concentration of nanotubes in the solution.

Abstract: Non-linear optical materials find wide range of applications in the fields of opto-electronics, fiber optic communication, computer memory devices etc. Tris-Glycine Zinc Chloride (TGZC) is one of the NLO materials exhibiting more efficiency. In the present study Tris-Glycine Zinc Chloride were grown is single crystal form using slow evaporation technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the crystal belongs to orthorhombic system with the space group Pbn21. The optical absorption studies show that the crystal is transparent in the entire visible region with a cut off wavelength of 250 nm. The optical band gap is found to be 4.60 eV. The dependence of extinction coefficient (K) and refractive index (n) on the wavelength has also been reported. Force constants (k) were calculated using FTIR spectral analysis which shows higher values of k for COO and C=O stretching vibrations. The dielectric studies show that the dielectric constant and dielectric loss decrease exponentially with frequency at different temperatures (35℃, 55℃, 75℃ and 95℃).

Abstract: Single crystals of Glycine Zinc Chloride (GZC) were grown from aqueous solution by slow evaporation technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the crystal belongs to orthorhombic system with the space group Pna21.The optical transmission study reveals the transparency of the crystal in the entire visible region and the cut off wavelength has been found to be 230 nm. The optical band gap is found to be 3.40eV. The transmittance of GZC crystal has been used to calculate the refractive index (n), the extinction coefficient (K) and the real er and imaginary ei components of the dielectric constant. Mechanical studies were carried out on the as grown crystal. Dielectric constant and dielectric loss measurements were carried out at different temperatures and frequencies. Photoconductivity measurements carried out on the grown crystal reveal the negative photoconducting nature.

Abstract: The real-time fault diagnosis system is very important for steam turbine generator set due serious fault results in a reduced amount of electricity supply in power plant. A novel real-time fault diagnosis system is proposed by using Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm related to tuning parameters of Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The model of novel fault diagnosis system by using ANN are built and analyzed. Cases of the diagnosis are simulated. The results show that the real-time fault diagnosis system is of high accuracy and quick convergence. It is also found that this model is feasible in real-time fault diagnosis. The steam turbine is used as a power generator by SONELGAZ, an Algerian company located at Cap Djinet town in Boumerdes district. We used this turbine as our main target for the purpose of this analysis. After deep investigation, while keeping our focus on the most sensitive parts within the turbine, the weakest and the strongest points of the system were identified. Those are the points mostly adequate for failure simulations and at which the designed system will be better positioned for irregularities detection during the production process.

Abstract:

The effect of calcitonin on the blood glucose level in glucose-tolerance test of children with the first degree obesity was studied. Initial blood glucose level was normal and glucose-tolerance test per os didn’t expose glucose tolerance impairment in children under control. Calcitonin didn’t change initial glucose concentration but evoked impairment of glucose tolerance. The girls with the first degree obesity were more sensitive to hyperglycemic effect of calcitonin than the boys. Sex specificities must be taken into consideration in calcitonin treatment. Besides one ought mean that the increasing secretion of calcitonin occurs in stress-reactions. In these conditions endogenous calcitonin can make the same effect on the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism as exogenous injections of hormone.

Application of Mammary Gland Endoprosthesis without a Shell in Modern Oncomammological Practice  [PDF]

Abstract:

Immediate and late follow-up results of oncomammological application of novel Ukrainian endoprosthesis “Nubiplant”, made of one piece of polyacrylamide gel, for mammary gland malignancies (MGM) radical treatment with reconstruction were analyzed. This endoprosthesis have proved its unique complex of favorable surgical and oncological properties, such as the shape and size accommodation for mammary gland plasty purposes, absence of shell and textured surface. Of 184 patients, operated on radically for initial stages of MGM, using \"Nubiplant\" endoprosthesis, postoperative complications have had occur in 18 (9,8%): the wound seroma in 12 (6,5%) and partial necrosis of cutaneous edge of postoperative wound – in 6 (3,8%). The seromas were successfully treated by their punctures and local necrosis - using excision with secondary suture placement. Late follow-up results were obtained in 112 (60,9%) patients: three-year period have had survived 104 (92,6±2,4%), and a five-year one – 84 (75,0±4,0%) of them. A contracture capsule was revealed in 3 (2,6%) patients, and excised with the endoprosthesis change. “Nubiplant” endoprosthesis have advantages over most popular worldwide kinds of such products. It may be used securely and effectively for total or partial reconstruction of mammary gland, including cases with hypoplasia, and is more resistant to trauma, radiation therapy and local complications occurrence, including contracture capsule formation. Its property to absorb the water may be used for purposes of plastic surgery. Prophylaxis of specific immediate surgical complications is trustworthy in MGM patients, using modified endoprosthesis “Nubiplant”, containing insulin, antihistamine and antiseptic medicines.

Reducing toxic effect of seed-soaked Cu fertilizer on germination of wheat  [PDF]

Abstract: A laboratory incubation experiment (20℃) was conducted to find if the detrimental effects of seed-soaked Cu on wheat seedlings can be minimized by reducing time duration of seed in contact with Cu EDTA fertilizer solution. The 24 treatments in a 6 x 4 factorial arrangement included 6 rates/amounts of Cu (0, 15, 30, 60, 120 and 240 g Cu 100 kg-1 seed) and 4 seed-soaking time durations (0, 4, 8 and 16 h). The germination of wheat seed was 100% in the zero-Cu control treatments, irrespective of the duration of seed soaking time. However, seed germination decreased with increasing amount of fertilizer Cu in the seed-soaking solution, and the magnitude of reduction in seed germination due to Cu toxicity increased with increasing duration of seed-soaking time in the Cu fertilizer solution. For the seed-soaked treatments, the detrimental effect of Cu on germination was greatest with 16 h soaking, where only 13% - 18% of the seeds germinated with Cu applied at 15 to 30 g Cu 100 kg-1 seed. For the 4 and 8 h seed soaking treatments, germination of wheat seed ranged from 73% to 83% with 15 g Cu 100 kg-1 seed treatment and 42% to 62% with 30 g Cu 100 kg-1 seed. The findings suggest that the detrimental effect of Cu on germination of wheat seed soaked in Cu EDTA solution can be decreased by reducing duration of soaking time from 16 h to 4 or 8 h, but this needs further investigation using soil under growth chamber and/or field conditions in order to make valid recommendations for use of this new technology on a commercial scale.
