Selection of Effective Control Technique in Analysis of Pulsed Power Loads

Abstract: This study considers the effect of Pulsed Power Loads (PPLs) on micro-grid power systems such as those on warships, pulsed weapons and recovery systems. A design metric to describe the disturbance of PPLs on power systems is shown. A control strategy utilizes the design metric to reduce the impact of PPL. This strategy is based on identifying the optimal charging profile. Using simulation, it is shown the proposed strategy is highly effective in reducing the adverse impact of pulsed-power loads by reducing the impulse response of capacitor current. This study outlines an approach to analyze the effects of such loads upon the electric power grid using the proposed technique Trapezoidal Based Control (TBC) and a charging profile is developed for the existing analysis technique Limit Based Control (LBC). Both the control techniques are compared to find the effective approach in reducing the impact of pulsed power loads.

Abstract: The major objective is to optimize the properties of new polymeric films based on blends of cellulose acetate and guar gum. Recently guar gum was shown to be highly promising polymer for the colon targeting drug delivery system. Cellulose acetate, a water-insoluble polymer can protect the core from the small intestinal pH and act as a reservoir type system. However, it is yet unknown how desired membrane properties, especially water uptake and dry mass loss kinetics as well as mechanical stability can be adjusted to the specific needs of particular drug treatment. Variation in the guar gum:cellulose acetate blends were made thereby highly efficient and easy application tools were identified altering the membrane’s properties.

Abstract: Multilevel inverter has played a vital role in medium and high power applications in the recent years. In this paper, Reduced Switch Count Multi Level Inverter structure (RSCMLI) topology is presented with different pulse width modulation techniques. The harmonic level analysis is carried out for the reduced switch count multilevel inverter with the different PWM technique such as with Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition (APOD) method, In Phase Disposition (IPD) methodand multi reference pulse width modulation method for five level, seven level , nine level and eleven level inverter. The simulation results are compared with the cascaded H Bridge Multi Level Inverter (CHBMLI). The nine level RSCMLI inverter with APOD method is used for the Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator (DSTATCOM) application in the nonlinear load connected systemfor power factor improvement. The result shows that the harmonic level and the number of switches required for RSCMLI is reduced compared to CHBMLI. RSCMLI employed in DSTATCOM improves the power factor and harmonic level of the system when it is connected to the nonlinear load.

Abstract: This research work brings out the unique predictive current control method for attaining an efficient grid connected Photo Voltaic (PV) system by Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) as grid connected converter. The major objective of the research work is to address the presence of Direct Current (DC) component, frequency improvement, quicker theta response, voltage magnitude estimation in the input signal of the Phase Locked Loop (PLL) which is challenging. This work focuses on tuning the PLL block (Kp,?Ki,?Kv?and Ko)?through Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) optimization algorithm. The proposed ABC based modified three-phase PLL method is based on adding a new loop inside the PLL structure. In power converters, ABC algorithm is used to select the optimal switching states. The voltage vector which minimizes a cost optimization function is selected. Simulation is carried out for both balanced and unbalanced system and the results validate that the performance of the proposed approach is better in terms of harmonic compensation as per the IEEE standards within ±5%, power factor improvement of the system, quicker theta tracking and suppression of frequency jump with the interconnection of PV system.
Performance Evaluation of Face Recognition Using Gabor Filter, Log Gabor filter and Discrete Wavelet Transform

Abstract: The face recognition problem is made difficult by the great variability in head rotation and tilt, lightingintensity and angle, facial expression, aging, partial occlusion (e.g. Wearing Hats, scarves, glasses etc.), etc.The Eigenfaces algorithm has long been a mainstay in the field of face recognition and the face space hashigh dimension. Principal components from the face space are used for face recognition to reducedimensionality. A multiscale representation for face recognition is done to preserve the discriminantinformation prior to dimensionality reduction. In this paper, three multiscale representation techniquesGabor filter; Log Gabor filter and Discrete Wavelet Transform are applied prior to dimensionalityreduction. PCA is then applied on the above techniques to find the face recognition accuracy rate and tocompare the results of the three methods with PCA method. The approximation coefficients in discretewavelet transform is extracted and it is used to compute the face recognition accuracy instead of using allthe coefficients.
Performance Analysis of Receivers in WDM for Extended Reach Passive Optical Networks

Abstract: In this paper we have investigated and analyzed the performance of receivers for different classes of WDM PON system for next generation Passive Optical Networks. The performance is analyzed using Manchester coding for different receivers using various data rates and various fibre distances at the optical network unit in a 32 user WDM PON and DWDM PON. The experimental results are analyzed using the parameters BER, Qfactor and Eye Pattern. The simulation results revealed that the performance gain of around 2.5 Gbps in terms of data carrying capacity per user over a distance of could be achieved if APD receivers are used in the receiver side downstream direction.

Torsion Balance Investigation of the Casimir Effect

Abstract: The presence of finite energy in quantum vacuum has profound implications to physics at the microscopic and macroscopic levels. One of the direct consequences of vacuum energy is the Casimir Force, which is a force of attraction experienced by a pair of infinite planar conductive plates placed in vacuum. Experiments to measure Casimir force have been carried out since the 1950s. This thesis presents a measurement of Casimir force between a flat and a spherical conducting surface using a torsion balance for separations in the range of 1 micron to 8 micron. The details of the construction of the torsion balance apparatus, the experimental procedure and the analysis to obtain the Casimir force as a function of separation are described. There are indications of the finite temperature effects which become important for separations greater than ~ 3microns. The combined import of this experiment with others at shorter distances is to favor the finite temperature theory of Casimir forces. The contributions of this experiment towards bounding the strength of inverse square law short-range violating interactions are presented.
Functionalized Exfoliated Graphene Oxide as Supercapacitor Electrodes  [PDF]

Abstract: Functionalized exfoliated graphene oxide (EGO) for supercapacitor electrodes have been synthesized by simple chemical methods from the exfoliated graphite (EG) as precursor. Structural and morphological characterizations of EGO have been carried out using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical performance of these electrodes has been investigated using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The fabricated supercapacitor gave a specific capacitance of 146 Fg-1 and energy density of 20 Wh·kg-1 for a highly oxidized sample with more functional groups compared to pure, lower level oxidized and reduced samples. The single and multi layered graphene oxide sheets produced by this method have a lower degree of agglomeration. We found that the graphene oxide with functional oxygen groups of quinine type enhances the capacitance compared to other oxygen functional groups.
