Some Remarks on the Question of Charge Densities in Stationary-Current-Carrying Conductors
Liana Baroni,Enrico Montanari,Alessandro D. Pesci
Physics , 1998, DOI: 10.1007/BF02722838
Abstract: Recently, some discussions arose as to the definition of charge and the value of the density of charge in stationary-current-carrying conductors. We stress that the problem of charge definition comes from a misunderstanding of the usual definition. We provide some theoretical elements which suggest that positive and negative charge densities are equal in the frame of the positive ions.
Meta-interpreting SETL
D. Aliffi,D. Montanari,E. G. Omodeo,M. Pellegrini
Le Matematiche , 1988,
Abstract: This paper describes a SETL interpreter written in SETL. This module may be reused as a basis to build debuggers, type checkers, symbolic executers, tracers, and many other general purpose programming tools. Other more advanced uses include experimenting with altered semantics for SETL and building interpreters for multi-paradigm languages, as in SetLog project, which aims at constructing a language integrating logic programming and set-oriented programming.
Surface and bulk characterization of molten In and In-Sn alloys
Gauzzi F.,Giuranno D.,Montanari R.,Novakovic R.
EPJ Web of Conferences , 2011, DOI: 10.1051/epjconf/20111501007
Abstract: In this work a double contribution to the characterization of molten In and In-Sn alloys considered as main components of an important class of lead free solder materials is shown: the study of the influence of oxygen on the capillary phenomena and the XRD investigation of the structure of liquid in a range of temperatures around that of liquidus. The surface tension behaviour of In-Sn binary alloys at different compositions, in terms of effective oxygen pressure, were compared with the data of pure In and the theoretical predictions, revealing that the lower oxidizability of indium was shown to control indium–tin alloys with a tin content up to about 80 at% , due to the presence of the most volatile oxide In2O. From the XRD spectra the radial distribution functions (RDF) have been determined for each alloys. Experiments of High Temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) showed that atomic clustering forms in the melt immediately before the appearing of the first solid. The structure of clusters is correlated to that of solid.
An investigation of the discriminant power and dimensionality of items used for assessing health condition of elderly people
Francesco Bartolucci,Giorgio d'Agostino,Giorgio E. Montanari
Statistics , 2010,
Abstract: With reference to the questionnaire adopted within the Italian project "Ulisse" to assess health condition of elderly people, we investigate two important issues: discriminant power and actual number of dimensions measured by the items composing the questionnaire. The adopted statistical approach is based on the joint use of the latent class model and a multidimensional item response theory model based on the 2PL parametrization. The latter allows us to account for the different discriminant power of these items. The analysis is based on the data collected on a sample of 1699 elderly people hosted in 37 nursing homes in Italy. This analysis shows that the selected items indeed measure a different number of dimensions of the health status and that they considerably di?er in terms of discriminant power (effectiveness in measuring the actual health status). Implications for the assessment of the performance of nursing homes from a policy-maker prospective are discussed.

Hydrology of the Po River: looking for changing patterns in river discharge
A. Montanari
Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) & Discussions (HESSD) , 2012,
Abstract: Scientists and public administrators are devoting increasing attention to the Po River, in Italy, in view of concerns related to the impact of increasing urbanisation and exploitation of water resources. A better understanding of the hydrological regime of the river is necessary to improve water resources management and flood protection. In particular, the analysis of the effects of hydrological and climatic change is crucial for planning sustainable development and economic growth. An extremely interesting issue is to inspect to what extent river flows can be naturally affected by the occurrence of long periods of water abundance or scarcity, which can be erroneously interpreted as irreversible changes due to human impact. In fact, drought and flood periods alternatively occurred in the recent past in the form of long-term fluctuations. This paper presents advanced graphical and analytical methods to gain a better understanding of the temporal distribution of the Po River discharge. In particular, we present an analysis of river flow variability and persistence properties, to gain a better understanding of natural patterns, and in particular long-term changes, which may affect the future flood risk and availability of water resources.
Language, culture, vision: some ideas for a critical approach
Federico Montanari
Rivista Italiana di Filosofia del Linguaggio , 2012,
Abstract: This paper would like to explore the return of a new “culturalist approach” to language, particularly in relation to visual representation and the spatial dimension. First, we will present the concepts of vision and space as recently described by cognitive linguistics (eg Lakoff, Johnson, with the idea of “embodiment”, or Talmy). Secondly, we will investigate the links between this cognitive linguistic trend and the “culturalist” point of view, especially in its recent versions (for example, Palmer). Comparisons have been proposed with some models that come from the neuro-mathematics of perception and visual cognition (these investigations are linked to a return to Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology; an influence that is also relevant inside cognitive linguistics). Finally we will try to highlight some possible convergence points of these studies.

URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs1101287 In this work—his PhD thesis—Christian VON SCHEVE examines the connections between emotions and social structures. From a sociological viewpoint and taking into account findings from the neurosciences and cognitive psychology, he seeks to answer the question of how, on the one hand, are emotions susceptible to influences from the social environment, and on the other, do they generate social structure themselves. By presenting many empirical findings, the author succeeds in exemplifying relevant mechanisms. Although one cannot expect to find definitive answers to these questions, VON SCHEVE'S work offers a rich contribution to discussions on the micro-macro link, as well as questions of human agency. At present, research on emotions by social scientists is an emerging field, which this review seeks to illustrate. Another aim of this review is to show which discussions can be enriched by debating the elements of this work. Abstract: In the aftermath of the Second World War, UNESCO sought to build peace in the world through the exchange of knowledge. To this end, it developed a number of initiatives to encourage international cooperation among social scientists. These initiatives were of particular importance in Europe, where there was a clear divide between Eastern and Western European countries. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, comparative research came to signify the transfer of knowledge and the promotion of innovation. Over the past two decades the study of urban phenomena, alongside social and economic issues, has taken on a strategic role in reducing pollution, safeguarding the environment and improving the quality of life of inhabitants. The process of enlarging the scope and objectives of policy has also led to a change in the role played by geography, which is increasingly required to offer instruments of scientific communication between the natural and social sciences.
