Near-infrared Spectra of Chamaeleon I Stars

Abstract: We present low resolution (R = 500) near-infrared spectra of 46 candidate young stellar objects in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region recently detected in several deep photometric surveys of the cloud. Most of these stars have K < 12. In addition, we present spectra of 63 previously known southern hemisphere young stars mainly belonging to the Chamaeleon I and Lupus dark clouds. We describe near-infrared spectroscopic characteristics of these stars and use the water vapor indexes to derive spectral types for the new objects. Photometric data from the literature are used to estimate the bolometric luminosities of all sources. We apply D'Antona & Mazzitelli (1998) pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks and isocrones to derive masses and ages. We detect two objects with mass below the H burning limit among the 46 new candidates. One of this object (PMK99 IR Cha INa1) is the likely driving source of a bipolar outflow in the northern region of the cloud.

Este estudio fue motivado por los discos de gas nucleares muy masivos que se observan en las regiones centrales de galaxias en fusi on. FLAVONOL PROFILES FOR VARIETAL DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN CARMéNèRE AND MERLOT WINES PRODUCED IN CHILE: HPLC AND CHEMOMETRIC ANALYSIS

Abstract: Wine differentiation is an important issue for the Chilean winemaking industry, especially for the Carménère variety, which was rediscovered in this country around 20 years ago. Authentication parameters are required for this wine due to its frequent confusion with Merlot. The concentration of anthocyanins, shikimic acid, and the principal flavonols found in wine allowed some varietal differentiation between Carménère and Merlot wines. Myricetin and quercetin are the most concentrated flavonols in wine in which they are present in free and conjugated forms. These compounds are responsible for important wine antioxidant properties. In the present work, using only the concentrations of free and conjugated quercetin and myricetin, differentiation between Carménère and Merlot varieties was better achieved. Flavonol profiles of wine produced in Chile were studied with HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn. An overview of the concentration range of flavonols present in 248 Chilean red wines is presented, finding that the mean concentration of the sum of total myricetin and total quercetin were higher in Carménère (81.5 mgL-1) and Merlot (78.9 mgL1) than in Cabernet Sauvignon (53.9 mgL1) wines. These mean levels were higher than the majority of the concentrations reported in the literature. The chemometric analysis shows that the ratio of total quercetin/total myricetin combined with the concentration of free myricetin allowed the varietal differentiation between Carménère and Merlot wines.
A parsec-scale flow associated with the IRAS 16547-4247 radio jet

Abstract: IRAS 16547-4247 is the most luminous (6.2 x 10^4 Lsun) embedded young stellar object known to harbor a thermal radio jet. We report the discovery using VLT-ISAAC of a chain of H_2 2.12 um emission knots that trace a collimated flow extending over 1.5 pc. The alignment of the H_2 flow and the central location of the radio jet implies that these phenomena are intimately linked. We have also detected using TIMMI2 an isolated, unresolved 12 um infrared source towards the radio jet . Our findings affirm that IRAS 16547-4247 is excited by a single O-type star that is driving a collimated jet. We argue that the accretion mechanism which produces jets in low-mass star formation also operates in the higher mass regime.
L483: A Protostar In Transition From Class 0 to Class I

Abstract: We present molecular-line observations toward the dense core in L483 and its bipolar outflow powered by the Class 0 object IRAS 18148-0440. CO (carbon monoxide) maps show that the outflow is well collimated and asymmetric, and that its gas is warmer than the surrounding cloud by at least a factor of 2. H2CO (formaldehyde) lines toward the outflow show prominent high-velocity wings and evidence for an H2CO abundance enhancement of a factor of 20. At ambient velocities, these lines show strong self-absorption and a brighter blue peak, a characteristic signature of inward motions. Finally, and in contrast with the outflows from other Class 0 objects, the CH3OH (methanol) lines in L483 do not show high velocity wings, and no evidence for abundance enhancement is found in this molecule or in SiO (silicon monoxide). Comparing the physical and chemical properties of the outflow in L483 with those of other outflows from Class 0 and Class I sources, we find that the L483 outflow is somewhat intermediate between these types. This suggests that the L483 central source has already started its transition between Class 0 and Class I, and that its mixed properties illustrate how this transition occurs.
Detection of a Collimated Jet towards a High-mass Protostar

Abstract: Here we present the discovery of a triple radio continuum source associated with IRAS 16547-4247. The spectral indices of the three components are consistent with a jet powered by a massive O-type star in the process of formation, with the outer radio components being the shocked gas at the working surfaces of the jet. The detected radio continuum emission from the central object is thought to arise from the jet itself, prior to the formation of a detectable HII region. All three radio continuum components are located within a molecular core of mass 10^3 M_sun. Our discovery makes IRAS 16547-4247 the most luminous (6.2 x 10^4 L_sun) young stellar object from which a thermal jet emanates, suggesting that the mechanism that produces jets in low-mass star formation also operates in high-mass star formation.
