Abstract: laser-induced thermoablation has been used as a reliable method for producing coagulation necrosis in hepatic tumors in patients who are not suitable for surgical treatment. the procedure can be performed percutaneously, using image-guiding methods, by open laparotomy or laparoscopy. we review the current literature and discuss the principles, indications, complications and clinical results as well as the potential limitations and contraindications of this novel technique.

Abstract: a wide range of both benign and malignant neoplasms may occur in the liver. although the characterization of focal hepatic lesions may represent a diagnostic challenge for radiologists, typical imaging findings in these lesions allow a correct diagnosis. the present study is aimed at reviewing imaging findings both in the most frequent benign and malignant focal lesion found in the adult liver.

Abstract: x-ray examinations may be necessary during pregnancy for an accurate diagnosis and adequate treatment administration. in these cases, the exposure to ionizing radiation and its effects on the fetus are a major concern to the patient and to the clinician. in fact, most of these examinations are safe and do not represent a significant risk to the fetus. however, the radiologist must know the potential risks to be able to instruct all personnel involved in the care of the patient.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the qualitative (morphological) and quantitative characteristics of hepatic hemangiomas with magnetic resonance imaging. material and methods: twenty-seven patients with 57 hemangiomas were prospectively studied with magnetic resonance imaging using a system operating at 1.5 t. t1- and t2-weighted spin-echo images were obtained, including heavily t2-weighted images with te of 160 ms. the morphological characteristics of the hemangiomas were studied and the lesions were classified as typical or atypical. quantitative parameters (t2 relaxation time, simplified t2 index and lesion/liver signal intensity ratio) were also calculated. the values obtained for typical and atypical hemangiomas were compared as well as for the hemangiomas measuring £ 2.0 cm and > 2.0 cm. results: 78.9% of hemangiomas showed typical morphological features. there was no difference between the quantitative values for typical and atypical hemangiomas. there was not significant difference in t2 relaxation times and values of simplified t2 index in hemangiomas measuring £ 2.0 cm and > 2.0 cm. lesion/liver signal intensity ratios showed significant differences between the two groups. t2 relaxation times, the simplified t2 index and the lesion/liver signal intensity ratios correctly characterized 96.5%, 93%, and 89.5% of the hemangiomas, respectively. conclusion: quantitative analysis of hepatic hemangiomas is a simple technique that in conjunction with morphological evaluation provides a more reliable characterization of these tumors.

Abstract: helical computed tomography has been widely used in the evaluation of the liver parenchyma for clinical and surgical management. the liver is probably the organ for which helical computed tomography examination is best indicated due to hepatic dual blood perfusion and the difference in blood supply between liver tumors and normal parenchyma. however, there are pitfalls in the interpretation of the images that may impair differentiation of true lesions from pseudolesions, particularly for the inexperienced radiologist. these pseudolesions present different shapes, location and characteristics that may mimic parenchymal lesions and their recognition and understanding are essential to avoid misdiagnoses. the aim of this study is to propose a systematic classification of the pseudolesions of the liver using illustrative cases and thus offer alternative means to differentiate these lesions from true parenchymal lesions.
The value of unenhanced CT in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis

Abstract: objective: to establish the accuracy of unenhanced ct in the preoperative diagnosis of acute appendicitis. design: accuracy study, prospective and blinded. setting: the university hospital. participants: 52 patients with clinical and laboratorial manifestations of acute appendicitis. ct diagnosis was made by: presence of an abnormal appendix, appendiceal calculi with pericecal phlegmon or alterations in the pericecal appendicular site and absence of signs that may lead to other diagnosis. main outcome measures: overall accuracy, comparing the tomographic aspects with the intra-operative findings and pathological reports ("gold standard"). results: acute appendicitis was confirmed in 44 cases. efficacy was 92%, sensitivity was 91%, specificity was 100%, positive predictive value was 100% and negative predictive value was 67%. conclusions: unenhanced ct presents a similar overall accuracy to that reported by other authors who studied enhanced ct diagnosis of acute appendicitis.
Tomographic aspects of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and related complications

Abstract: the authors present their experience involving seven patients with histopathologic diagnosis of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis who were submitted to preoperative computed tomography (ct). the results are the following: a) stones (86 percent of the cases), b) increase in renal volume, c) hydronephrosis, d) density measurements (from 14 to 29 hu), e) enhancement found in all cases, f) extrarenal involvement (all cases). ct has shown to be a reliable method in characterizing xanthogranulomatous xyelonephritis and extrarenal involvement.
Morphometric Analysis of the Internal Auditory Canal by Computed Tomography Imaging

Abstract: Background: Many clinical and experimental studies have been done to analyze the anatomicaland functional aspects of the internal auditory canal (IAC) in human beings sincethere are great inter-individual variability and structural variations that may occur regardingthe other adjacent structures.Objectives: The purpose of this study was to characterize the morphology of the internalauditory canal (IAC) during development using high resolution computed tomography(CT) and to analyze its dimensions, which will be determined by measuring the nearbyareas and structures using a system of digital image processing.Patients and Methods: CT images of the IAC of 110 normal subjects aged 1 to 92 years(mean age, 46.5 years) of both genders were reviewed to determine the shape, area, openingwidth (OW), longitudinal length (LL), vertical diameter (VD) and distance from the vestibularaqueduct.Results: The shapes observed in children and adults were funnel-shaped (74% and 58.3%,respectively), cylindrical (22% and 30.9%, respectively) and bud-shaped (4% and 10.8%, respectively).The measurements by CT in children were: area= 50.30 mm2, OW = 7.53 mm,length = 11.17 mm, VD = 4.82 mm and the distance between the IAC and the vestibular aqueduct(VA) = 12.63 mm. In adults, the measurements were: area = 44.64 mm2, OW = 7.10 mm,length = 9.84 mm, VD = 4.47 mm and the distance between IAC and VA = 11.17 mm.Conclusions: CT images showed that the IAC has different shapes and when the measurementsobtained for children were compared with those of adults, the parameters that presentedstatistically significant differences in either gender were length and diameter.

Abstract: A tomografia computadorizada helicoidal é largamente empregada na avalia o do parênquima hepático e tem grande importancia no planejamento clínico e cirúrgico. O fígado é o órg o que mais se beneficia de aquisi es helicoidais, em fases diferentes da perfus o do parênquima, pela sua dupla vasculariza o e pela diferen a de aporte sanguíneo entre tumores e parênquima sadio. Entretanto, várias armadilhas diagnósticas podem ser encontradas, dificultando a análise e prejudicando a diferencia o entre les es verdadeiras e pseudoles es, principalmente aos olhos de radiologistas menos experientes. Essas pseudoles es têm forma, localiza o e características variadas, podendo simular les es parenquimatosas. é de fundamental importancia que estejamos aptos a reconhecê-las, no sentido de interpretar corretamente as imagens tomográficas. O objetivo deste ensaio é classificar e ilustrar as diversas pseudoles es hepáticas pela tomografia computadorizada helicoidal, com uma breve descri o dessas les es e com alternativas para diferenciá-las das les es do parênquima.
