Abstract: this paper investigated the occurrence and impact of stressing events for 297 low- income children/adolescents (both sexes; 7-16 years, m =11.22; sd = 2.13) in the city of porto alegre. group 1 (g1) consisted of 142 participants (living with their families) and group 2 (g2) of 155 institutionalized individuals. all were individually interviewed and answered the stressing events inventory for children/adolescents. the most frequent stressing events for the sample were: follow orders given by the parents (85.2%); quarrels with friends (72.9%); death of relatives (71.8%); failure at school (69.2%); and rivalry of siblings (68%). student's t-test revealed significant difference between groups (p <0,001) regarding the occurrence of stressing events, g2 presented higher scores (m = 26.79; sd = 8.67) than g1 (m = 19.16; sd = 9.37). the events that caused the greatest impact upon the studied group were: death of parents and friends, rape, rejection by relatives and violence. there was no significant difference between sexes (p>0.05). the high frequency and strong impact of stressing events reveal the situation of social and familiar vulnerability, presence of violence and lack of resources in the whole group.

Abstract: this article presents a study based on a pretest (t1) and post test (t2) that aims to evaluate the impact of an educational/sporting project in children's psychological development. thirty nine pupils with 6 to 11 years old, from first to fourth grades of a public school have participated in the study. they were separated in 2 groups: g1 (24 project participants); and g2 (n=15, comparison group). the teachers have also participated. the impact was evaluated considering the differences in school performance, stress, and life style scores. the teachers graded academic and social attitudes. g1 and g2 had a statistically significant increase in school performance from t1 to t2. the average stress was lower in t2 compared to t1 for all groups, although this decrease was only statistically significant for g1. life style perception decreased between t1 and t2 for g1 and g2, but only significantly for g2. there was no difference in the way teachers evaluated either g1 and g2 or t1 or t2.

Abstract: In this article, I will reconstruct, through brief stories, some of the traits that characterize the way of life of families in the El Salvador neighborhood, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, go scavenging everyday in Buenos Aires city. These stories will not only tell us who they are and how they arrived at the El Salvador neighborhood, from where, and in what manner they began to salir con la carreta, but will also permit us to move closer to the day-to-day existence of these families in relationship to their life in the barrio and the activities they engage in, thereby giving us a fuller understanding of family dynamics. In the research that originated this paper, I followed an ethnographical perspective to study and analyze the way of life of those families living from the recyclable waste they recollect in Buenos Aires city.

Betrisey Nadali, Débora;
Migraciones internacionales , 2007,
Abstract: within the framework of argentinean society, in recent decades, obvious processes of stigmatization have been established that give rise to the production of "others" on the basis of their condition of "border immigrants" (such as paraguayans, chileans and bolivians), who are always prey manipulation. in this essay, i propose to delve into the logic of certain premises and interpretative frameworks drawn from sociology and anthropology, in order to analyze these processes of stigmatization. these theoretical-methodological perspectives enable one to record the personal experience of immigrants, and focus on the "language of resistance" through which these groups dismantle and re-create their stigmatized identities. these reflections are the result of ethnographic material collected between 1999 and 2000 in the city of posadas (misiones, argentina) adjoining the city of encarnación (district of itapúa, paraguay).
