Microbiology of Tomato Fruits Produced with Wastewater from Swine

Abstract: Aiming to evaluate the microbiological contamination of tomatoes fruits produced with wastewater from swine (WS), tomatoes of the variety Fanny TY had been cultivated in lysimeters of draining in a greenhouse and fertirrigated with different doses of WS with and without supplemental fertilization. The fruits were subjected to analysis of fecal and total coliforms and Salmonella spp. The results allowed concluding that the count of total coliforms was influenced by the proximity of the fruits in relation to the reservoir with WS and not by applied doses; The use of WS resulted in healthy fruit from the standpoint of sanitary.

Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects on wastewater from swine (WS) in the electrical (EC) and hydraulic (K0) soil conductivity. For this, tomatos of the variety Fanny TY were cultivated in lisymeters of drainage under protected environment and fertirrigated with WS different doses with and without application of fertilizer complementation. The results showed that: a chemical fertilizer was more effective in the ionization of the soil solution of the WS, with higher values of CEes treatments receiving low irrigation ARS and greater amounts of chemical fertilizer; K0 increased under intake of salts and organic matter, resulting from chemical fertilizer, irrigation and fertirrigation with ARS, which led to the restructuring of the soil in lysimeters.
Retardation factors and dispersion-diffusion coefficients of heavy metals in construction and demolition waste

Abstract: Considering the possibility of using the construction and demolition waste (CD) as "chemical barrier" to pollutants in landfill, the influence of the CD in the parameters of the transport of heavy metals in the leachate (leached + rainwater infiltrated) produced by urban solid waste newly collected was investigated. For this, three size fractions of CD (0.5 to 1; 2 to 4 and 4 to 7.5 mm) were used and leachate in the average concentrations of 0.146 mg L-1 for Cu, 0.046 mg L-1 of Cd, 17.2 mg L-1 Zn and 0.135 mg L-1 Pb. The results enabled to conclude that the magnitude of the retardation factors for the metals followed the sequence: Pb>Cu>Zn>Cd; the increase in granulation fractions in BD resulted in smaller retention factor.

Abstract: This study had the objective of evaluating the variation of nitrogen and phosphorus in soil fertirrigated with effluent of primary treatment of wastewater from swine. Tomatos of the variety Fanny TY were cultivated in lisymeters of drainage under protected environment and fertirrigated with filtered wastewater from swine (FWS) at different doses with and without application of additional fertilizer. The results showed that: increments in the FWS doses resulted in more abortion of phosphorus; in comparison to the initial conditions, there was increase in the concentration of available phosphorus, specially in the superficial layers; FWS addition resulted in increments in the nitrogen concentration in the superficial layers, while the chemical application of fertilizer resulted in larger displacement in the soil profile.
Determination of Characteristics of Urban Solid Waste in Landfill

Abstract: This study aimed to determine chemical and physical characteristics of the urban landed solid residue. The physical and chemical characterization of samples was obtained by analysis: specifies the mass and particle residue, pH in water (1:2.5), organic carbon, infrared spectroscopy, potentiometric titration, concentration of metals (Zn , Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, Mg, Mn, Fe and Cr) and quantification of humic substances. The results showed that the residues presented humics substances high concentration, with groups titratable compatible with values observed in literature for humics substances; RSU_Old presented hight humification degree and high capacity of the retention of metals regarding RSU_Mature.
Kinesiographic study of mandibular movements during functional adaptation to complete dentures

Abstract: after complete denture insertion, edentulous patients usually present transitory difficulties. this is one of the most critical stages of prosthetic treatment and it is strongly related to the prostheses acceptance. the aim of this study was to evaluate potential changes in the mandibular movement pattern related to insertion of the complete denture during the functional adaptation period. the kinesiograph instrument k6-i (myotronics research inc., seattle, wa) was used to evaluate eight edentulous patients that received conventional complete denture treatment. recordings of opening and closure movement limits, movement velocity, postural rest position, chewing cycle and limits of eccentric movements were performed. each patient was evaluated in four different stages: with the old dentures, immediately after insertion of the new dentures, and 30 days and 6 months after insertion of the dentures. the results showed that there were no remarkable changes in the mandibular motion patterns after insertion of the new dentures. it was suggested that the problems related to the process of utilization of new dentures are not strictly associated to the mandibular movement. therefore, functional adaptation after denture insertion is not directly related to functional changes, but to the quality of the dentures and to individual features.

Abstract: The increasing size of swine farms poses an environmental risk to water bodies, considering that manure is generally applied to croplands without appropriate agronomic criteria. Objective: the present work aimed to evaluate various chemical changes occurring in soils fertirrigated with filtrated wastewater from swine facilities (FWS). Methods: 21 drainage lysimeters filled with Dystrophic Red-Yellow Latossoil were cultivated with tomato plants in protected environments, and fertirrigated with several doses of FWS, with and without fertilizer addition. Treatments were: T1: control (provided the recommended irrigation and fertilization needs for tomato plants). Treatments T2, T3, and T4, provided 100, 150, and 200% of recommended nitrogen (N), respectively, by adding filtered swine wastewater. Treatments T5, T6, and T7 provided equivalent N percentages with fertilizer addition. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design (seven treatments and three replications). Results: compared with initial conditions, an increase in the concentration of available phosphorus was observed, mainly in the superficial layers. The FWS addition resulted in increments in N concentration in the superficial layers, while chemical fertilizer application resulted in larger displacements in the soil profile. Conclusion: chemical fertilization was more effective than FWS for ionizing the soil solution. El aumento en el tama o de las granjas porcinas supone un riesgo ambiental para los cuerpos de agua, teniendo en cuenta que el estiércol se aplica generalmente a las tierras de cultivo sin adecuados criterios agronómicos. Objetivo: el presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar los diversos cambios químicos que ocurren en los suelos fertirrigados con aguas residuales de instalaciones porcícolas (FWS). Métodos: 21 lisímetros de drenaje llenos con Latosuelo distrófico rojo-amarillo fueron cultivados con plantas de tomate en ambientes protegidos, y fertirrigados con varias dosis de FWS, con y sin adición de fertilizante. Los tratamientos fueron: T1: control (proveía la irrigación y fertilización recomendada para las necesidades de las plantas de tomate). Los tratamientos T2, T3 y T4 suministraron el 100, 150 y 200%, respectivamente, del nitrógeno (N) recomendado, mediante la adición de las aguas residuales filtradas. Los tratamientos T5, T6 y T7 proporcionaron los mismos porcentajes de N mediante la adición de fertilizantes. Maximum adsorption capacity of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn of the percolated of landfill in build demolition residue

Abstract: The high toxicity and the cumulative character of heavy metals have been of great concern worldwide, providing a significant increase in the number of studies that aim to develop technologies to remove these potentially noxious substances in the environment. Aiming to study the capacity of the building demolition residue (BDR) in removing heavy metals from leached of newly collected solid residue, analyses of metals adsorption were carried out. BDR was used in three granulation fractions (0.5 to 1; 2 to 4 and 4 to 7.5 mm) and leachate containing Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn in concentrations ranging from 0.046 to 150, from 0.146 to 200, from 0.135 to 200 and from 17.2 to 9000 mg L-1, respectively. The results allowed to conclude that BDR in the 2 - 4 mm and 4 - 7.5 mm granulation fractions presented the following sequence for the maximum retention capacity: Zn>Pb>Cu>Cd; but for BDR in the 0.5 - 1 mm granulation the sequence was Zn>Cu>Pb>Cd.
Growth and development physiology of tomato fertirrigated with wastewater from swine

Abstract: In this study aimed to evaluate the growth and physiological development parameters of tomato fertirrigated with wastewater from swine (WS). For this, tomatoes of variety Fanny TY were cultivated in lysimeters of drainage under protected environment and fertirrigated with WS different doses with and without application of fertilizer complementation. The results showed that: the tomatoes subjected to different treatments showed no differences in time of bloom, stem diameter, number of expanded leaf, pre-dawn leaf-water potential, photosynthetic rate, stomatic conductance and breathing tomato. Leaf analysis showed that WS applied in any doses, supplied the needs nutritional of tomato.
PERDIDA DE CARGA EN CONDUCTOS DE HIERRO GALVANIZADO CONDUCIENDO AGUA RESIDUAL DE INSTALACIONES DE GALLINAS PONEDORAS

Abstract: Las operaciones relacionadas con la producción de aves de corral pueden generar efluentes procedentes de fuentes distintas, incluida la escorrentía originada en las jaulas, alimentación y abastecimiento de agua de las aves y de las instalaciones de almacenamiento y manejo de residuos. En todo proyecto de explotación de aves de corral, se debe tener en cuenta el manejo de residuos y aguas residuales, las cuales pueden ser conducidas en tuberías de hierro galvanizado. El objetivo de este trabajo, fue el ajustar ecuaciones para estimar la perdida de carga continua en conductos de hierro galvanizado en los diámetros comerciales, variando de 50 a 150 mm, operando con agua residual de gallinas ponedoras en diferentes concentraciones de sólidos totales. Los resultados indicaron que las metodologías de Duffy & Titchener y HazenWilliams modificadas presentaron ajustes cuyo coeficiente de determinación fue superior a 0,95, por lo que es considerado apropiado para el dimensionamiento de proyectos hidráulicos.
