Abstract: the lost-letter technique was adapted to the cultural context of brazil. three hundred stamped and addressed letters were placed "by accident", i.e., simulating loss, on the wind shields of private cars in two large parking areas. a attached note explained that the author had missed the owner of the car. the note varied such that the author appeared to be either male or female (factor 1), have certain personal characteristics, such as being black, homosexual, or control group (factor 2), and allowed for telephone contact or not with the author (factor 3) in a 2 x 3 x 2 experimental design. the finder of the letter could either (a) post the letter (pro-social behavior) or (b) ignore it. 60.7% of the letters were posted. no significant difference was found in terms of sex or personal characteristics, nor interaction between these two factors. being able to telephone the author made a significant difference, more letter in this condition were posted. methodologically, the lost letter technique showed promise, especially as a non-reactive research instrument in the study of prejudice and helping behavior.

Health (Health) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/health.2015.72022
Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate and to validate an educational video to promote maternal self-efficacy in preventing childhood diarrhea with women assisted in a health unit. Validation study, developed with 17 mothers whose children were under five years old, was analyzed on scenes of an educational video according to the validity of appearance (clarity/comprehension) and of content (relevance). The scenes were considered clear and comprehensive with a perceptual above 70% and with an average of 96.9% of agreement. Regarding the relevance, the agreement was maintained between 94% and 100%, however only scenes 03 and 13 presented 76.6% and 70.6% of agreement respectively. Global Content Validation Index of the educational video scenes was 0.97 meaning an excellent level of agreement among mothers. The video showed to be a valid and a trustworthy material to promote maternal self-efficacy in preventing childhood diarrhea. Therefore, it is important that the material is disseminated in other health services so that other mothers may have contact with the same, providing greater reliability of the material.
Dental fluorosis in Brazil: a systematic review from 1993 to 2004
Cunha, Leonardo Fernandes da;Tomita, Nilce Emy;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2006000900011
Abstract: the current article proposes a reflection on several aspect pertaining to dental fluorosis in brazil, based on a systematic review of epidemiological surveys. the authors assess the prevalence and degrees of severity found in different studies and show that in methodological terms, there is a need for progress in procedures for population-based studies on fluorosis. despite the different data collection approaches, there is some consensus among the different studies as to the limited severity of fluorosis in brazil, as well as its association with the independent variables age and socioeconomic status. the authors also highlight the importance of adding subjective aspects to the normative diagnosis as a contribution to public health policy decisions, since the use of exclusively clinical criteria gives dental fluorosis more space than society ascribes to it. there is a lack of empirical evidence to reassess the fluoride content in public water supplies, a method that is known to be necessary to improve dental caries epidemiological indicators.

Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2003000800011
Abstract: grazing management and planning of animal production systems from pastures are essentially based on estimates of herbage mass, production and accumulation rates. this work evaluated two methods, sward stick and rising plate meter, for estimating herbage mass in pasture areas formed by cynodon spp. cultivars florakirk, tifton 85 and coastcross. paddocks were maintained at 5, 10, 15 and 20 cm sward surface height through continuous stocking with sheep, according to a complete randomized block design with four replications. over twelve months, calibration equations of stick and plate sward height versus the correspondent herbage mass were generated. as a result, four y = a + bx type calibration equations (y is the herbage mass in kg ha-1 and x is the sward height) were obtained. most of the variation among cultivars and seasons of the year occurred in intercept values (a) and less in slope values (b). this variation was related to modifications in sward structure, particularly in dead material content. the methods did not differ in precision, although the rising plate meter proved to be faster and more agile. calibration of both methods must be specific for each cultivar and carried out regularly in order to result in precise equations capable of generating reliable estimates of herbage mass.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to compare methods of tree height measure in natural foress. total heights measured by hypsometer vertex were compared with those obtained by escalade of the trees. the method of visual estimate was also tested, with and without training, as a more practical alternative and of slower cost. the tested methods were evaluated for three height classes: 1 - (15-25 meters); 2 - (25-35 meters) and; 3 - (> 35 meters). at the end, it was concluded that the increase in the height of the trees reduced precision of the estimate for the appraised methods, being more evident in the visual estimate without training. the only statistical difference, at the level of 5% of probability for the test t, among the averages of heights for the appraised methods and the averages of the heights obtained by escalade, in the different classes, occurred in the visual estimate with training in the class 2. the statistics average deviation (dm), average of the absolute differences (md) and standard deviation of the differences (dpd) indicated larger precision in the estimate of the height for the visual estimate with training, following vertex and visual estimate without training.

Abstract: This report aims to describe the first case allochthonous of visceral leishmanisasis (VL) in the municipality of Campo Mour o, Parana, Brazil, in a canine, Boxer breed, with eye and skin lesions, lymphadenomegaly and splenomegaly, attended at Veterinary Hospital at the Faculdade Integrado de Campo Mour o, after residing in the city of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. The diagnosis of the disease was based on direct observation of amastigotes of Leishmania spp., in popliteal lymph nodes, suggesting that a case of VL, since the animal came from an endemic area for the disease. The migration of infected dogs from endemic regions to areas unaffected becomes a problem for public health, since it may allow the installation of new outbreaks by encouraging the spread of disease throughout the country.

Abstract: this article exposes sigmund freud's ideas about themes which are fundamental to the comprehension of the contemporary man: the psychic constitution; the formation and resolution of mental pathologies; the broad meaning of culture and the education as a mediating element between individual and society. this paper aims to present and compare the analysis made by john dewey regarding these same themes based on the book human nature and conduct. the comparisons between freudian and deweyan discourses are made through the methodology proposed by cha?m perelman in the book treatise on argumentation (co-authored by olbrechts-tyteca), which aims to clarify the argumentative strategies used by an author to obtain or increase adhesion to the proposed theses and, with that, to awaken concrete actions. the conclusions suggest that although dewey disagrees with freud, they agree on certain issues, especially regarding the meaning of impulses and sublimation and regarding the conception that knowledge is changeable and imprecise, what rejects the belief in absolute certainties and inserts human actions and decisions in the sphere of probability.
