Abstract: this historical study of the aids epidemic in peru between 1983 and 2000 focuses on legal responses and on medical studies and intervention, especially during the early 1980s, a decade characterized by serious economic crisis and terrorist violence. as elsewhere around the world, the appearance of aids intensified interactions between scientists, public health specialists, journalists, politicians, and patients, with major influence on culture as well as on public health responses to the disease. in addition to retelling an important story, the study demonstrates the validity and usefulness of the historical perspective, which affords a better understanding of recent events in health and in society overall.

Abstract: The educational system in Peru has many challenges to conquer, among them providing student populations in high poverty areas with quality service. Rural students are one of the groups that represent an important challenge, because they often speak an indigenous language and study in classrooms that combine a wide variety of ages and grades under a single teacher. This study used a longitudinal design to follow a group of students in 20 public schools in two rural areas. The first measurements were carried out in 1998, when all the students where in fourth grade. Tests of reading comprehension and mathematics were administered at the end of the school year, and again in 2000. Background information included anthropometric measures, questionnaires for the students, teachers, and schools. We went back to the schools in 2001 to record the grade reached by the students. We found that 43% of the students were in high school, while 20% had dropped out; the rest had repeated a grade one or more times. Educational achievement in 2000 was best explained by achievement in 1998, but dropping out was not associated with achievement. Dropping out was associated with gender (women were more likely to drop out), age (older students were more likely to drop out), height for age (positive association) and not living with both parents. We found no in-school support programs for students that fall behind their peers or are at risk of dropping out. In a way we could describe the observed schools as "Darwinian" in the sense that it is expected that students will adapt to the school. The performance of Factores Predictivos del Rendimiento Escolar 3 students has no consequences for their teachers. In terms of policy implications, we suggest considering interventions that account for not only educational variables, but also other needs of the students and families that are served by these schools.
Cueto, Marcos
Bulletin de l'Institut Francais d'études Andines , 1990,
Abstract: ENTRE LA THEORIE ET LA TECHNIQUE : LES DEBUTS DE LA PHYSIOLOGIE D ALTITUDE AU PEROU. BETWEEN THEORY AND TECHNOLOGY: THE FIRST STEP IN THE PHYSIOLOGY OF ALTITUDE IN PERU. In this essay the author revises the history of peruvian physiology focusing in the emergence of two different and somewhat confronted developments which characterized the first years of high altitude studies in Peru. In the one had the proposal of ambitious theoretical assertions of the biological peculiarity of human life in the Andes. On the other hand, the emphasis in technological expertise of sophisticated research equipment and supplies. The essay concludes showing a paradox: both developments evolved into routine and repetition producing the same effect: loss of the originality that they exhibit during its first years.
Cueto,Víctor R.;
El hornero , 2006,
Abstract: i discuss about the meaning of scale in ecology, and how spatial dimensions of our study influence observed patterns and conclusions about processes producing them. i analyze the importance of establishing the spatial scale in our studies when we evaluate avian habitat selection, and i discuss methods and conclusions of a multiple-scale investigation on bird-vegetation relationships. i conclude that understanding the importance of scale in our investigations allows a better planning of the research project, facilitates the interpretation of the obtained results, and improves the potential to find explanations for the problem under study.
Caminos, ciencia y Estado en el Perú, 1850-1930

Abstract: this study offers a panoramic view of the relation between the development of naturalist studies and the control of territory in peru from the mid-nineteenth century through the first decades of the twentieth. notable scientific development took place during this period, in terms of research and of academic institutions. both research and academe enjoyed the support of the state, which had greater resources within its reach following the period of relative instability subsequent to independence in 1821. although this process of development was fragmented and discontinuous, it resulted in the first mapmaking work and geographic and naturalist studies, as well as the creation of communication pathways. further, it was justified by its potential contribution to an export economy and to the cultural prestige of civilian elites.
