“Inscrutable Intelligence”: The Case against Plastic Surgery in the Works of Jean Stafford and Sylvia Plath
Mercè Cuenca
Coolabah , 2009,
Abstract: Jean Stafford’s short story “The Interior Castle” (1946) and Sylvia Plath’s“Face Lift” and “The Plaster”, written in the early 1960s but published posthumously inCrossing the Water (1971), dwell on a theme which is rarely tackled in PostwarAmerican literature: plastic surgery. Using a markedly mnemonic tone, both authorstrace in detail the passive submission of female bodies to male (re)construction. Whilethe history of women in early Cold War America is usually associated with thepatriarchal mystifying of housewifery, the myth of ideal, domestic femininity was alsointimately related to bodily beauty. The demand for physical “perfection” whichresulted from constructing women as, primarily, objects of male desire was mirrored inpopular magazines, such as Ladies’ Home Journal, which endorsed women’s seekingmedical aid to model themselves into “ideal” sexual mates (Meyerowitz in Meyerowitzed., 244). Women’s submission to the notion that they should use any means necessaryto become aesthetic objects to be appraised by men was thus represented as desirable. Inthis paper, I shall trace how both Stafford and Plath adopted a confessional style ofwriting in the abovementioned pieces in order to denounce the cultural construction ofwomen as passive bodies to be moulded at will, instead of as active, thinking subjects. Ishall argue that by reproducing the recollections and thoughts of the women beingstitched, sewn and bandaged in their pieces, both authors articulated an alternativeprotofeminist aesthetics based on the beauty of what Stafford described as “inscrutableintelligence”.

Abstract: This work is framed in an investigation area of creative leisure, which is carried out in the Institute for Leisure Studies of the University of Deusto. Educational programs have, traditionally, been considered a tool to bring opera to new audiences. This article explores the educational initiatives from ten European opera organizations using the content analysis method. We will start from some fundamental principles of the leisure theory and the aesthetic theory, whose mission is to promote more satisfying aesthetic experiences. After evaluating whether these principles are reflected in reality, we will propose some actions that can contribute to furthering the reception process of opera and, thus, improve the operatic experience of the participants in the educational programs.
Flores,Carmen; Cuenca,Gisela;
Interciencia , 2004,
Abstract: the growth and dependence on arbuscular mycorrhiza of the pioneer and pollenectarizing species oyedaea verbesinoides was quantified. seeds of plants growing in a successional shrubland situated in altos de pipe, miranda state, venezuela, were collected. pre-germinated seedlings were transplanted to plastic pots filled with sterilized forest soil. four treatments with five replicates were performed in a greenhouse. the treatments consisted of inoculation with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus glomus manihotis (am), inoculation with am and fertilization with triple superphosphate (46%), plants fertilized with triple superphosphate and untreated control plants. after seventy days the roots, stems and leaves of all the plants were harvested. the results indicate a high response to mycorrhizal colonization and mycorrhizal dependency of this species. the inoculation produced a biomass increment of 566% as compared to the non inoculated treatment and of 46% as compared to the phosphate fertilized treatment. a significant increase was found in the contents and concentrations of p, n, k, ca and mg in plant tissue. total root length was measured and lower specific length was found in the mycorrhizal plants in comparison with the non inoculated ones. the results do not support the view of other authors in relation to the mycorrhizal condition of pioneer spec ies in the tropics.
Bernal Cuenca,Estrella;
Mundo agrario , 2011,
Abstract: this paper presents problems and opportunities of ecological agriculture in aragón, spain. with this aim ecological and conventional agricultures are compared as regards their socioeconomic as well as their environmental aspects. as a basis for this comparison, some basic fundaments of ecological agriculture are presented, as well as its accounting cost structure (obtained through field work in aragón and official databases, as well as data about its consume and distribution; finally, some public action ways are suggested in order to support ecological agriculture opportunities.
Lovera,Milagros; Cuenca,Gisela;
Interciencia , 2007,
Abstract: the benefits provided by arbuscular mycorrhizas (am) to plants are well known, especially those related to the improvement of mineral nutrition and protection against root pathogens, among others. although 80% of vascular plants are able to form am, it is considered that the association lacks specificity from a taxonomical point of view. however, recent evidence has arisen about the influence of the diversity of am fungi (amf) on the productivity, diversity, competitive relationships and functioning of natural ecosystems. in addition, there are evidences that support the idea that amf diversity is severely affected by disturbance and that some amf are particularly sensitive to human activities. the aim of this work is to compare the diversity of amf and the mycorrhizal soil potential of an undisturbed savannah from la gran sabana, bolivar state, venezuela, with an adjacent disturbed savannah. an exhaustive inventory of amf spores was done taking samples along the year, across the soil profile and using trap culture. results show that there is a high amf diversity in the natural savannah studied and many of the collected spores correspond to new species. results also pointed out that spores belonging to scutellospora and gigaspora are highly vulnerable to disturbance. this change in amf species composition might be related with the slow recovery and the type of plant community that finally will establish in these much degraded areas.

Abstract: this study analyses the results of end-user instruction through the databases modulated course in cd-rom medline/lilacs, modality of the library of the school of public health of university of s.paulo educational program, offered to health sciences scientists and postgraduate students. the whole of the category studied was 92 participants between november/1993 and november/1995. the results demonstrate that former students, who have done researches in the library, managed, in most cases (65,2%), to acquire autonomy in using databases, some of them (15,2%) requested librarians interventions, and some of them (19,6%) didn′t use the databases of the public health library, during this period. the users who do intermediary searching, appear to use an intermediary mainly for reasons such as: the lack of information technology, lack of familiarity with databases, reliability in the searches made by librarians and, lack of time for searching. the end-user who haven't done searching in databases said that hadn't needs for it.
?La bioética en la educación ambiental?
Cuenca,Roberto E;
Colombia Médica , 2006,
Abstract: introduction: in the area of the environment, it has been perceived the bioethics like an interdisciplinary in the construction of a critical thought that should conclude in an environmental knowledge with ethics and in a position epistemologist where the existential values and axiological are reaffirmed, to conclude analyzing the courses of the environmental education. objectives: to demonstrate how the bioethics claims the values of the humanism and to outline the environmental education as an action opportunity and generation of actions in the sustainable development of the communities of our region. methodology: by means of bibliographical revision, a rehearsal was elaborated about the relationship of the bioethics with the environmental education, as for the aspects of the atmosphere, the socioeconomic development and the environmental pedagogy. results: they were carried out descriptions about the holistic concept in the environment; conceptualization on environmental ethics; conceptualization about the sustainable development, the globalization and the sustainability; and conceptualization about the environmental education and the bioethics. conclusions: of the carried out analysis we have a first epilogue that drives to assume the responsibility for our to work in the world and being able to understand that our quality of life reaches its fullness, when we transcend from our individual conscience toward a form of conscience able to not feel as own alone our necessity but, that of all other human being and in all other way of life. and a second epilogue in outlining strategies of an environmental education, different to the traditional ones, like an evolution toward the education for the sustainability, on the as continuing the development at the same time that it is protected, it preserves and they conserve the systems of vital support of the planet.
Cuenca,Patricia; Morales,Fernando;
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2004,
Abstract: unstable mutations, new challenges for genetic counseling of inherited disorders. unstable mutations or amplification of dna tandem repeats sequences constitute a new kind of genetic alteration discovered in the 90′s that cause hereditary diseases. this mutation has been found inside or near important genes involved in the normal neurological function in human beings. in some cases, the presence of the amplification causes altered expression of the genes, their inactivation or the synthesis of a protein with new functions. some common characteristics of these diseases are that they affect the central nervous system and are degenerative in nature. most of them show genetic anticipation meaning that the severity of the manifestations increases in each generation and appear at an earlier age. in most cases, the severity of the symptoms is positively correlated with the size of the amplification. twenty illnesses caused by this kind of mutations have been identified so far. briefly, this work reviews the current knowledge about this topic. rev. biol. trop. 52(3): 491-499. epub 2004 dic 15.
