The HLP mutation confers enhanced resistance to leafrust in different wheat genetic backgrounds  [PDF]

Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/as.2010.12008
Abstract: In several plant species, lesionmimic mutants simulate the diseaseresistance response in the absence of pathogens. Interestingly, some of these mutants confer broadspectrum resistance to diverse pathogens. We previously demonstrated that the HLP (hypersensitivelike phenotype) mutant of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) exhibited spontaneous hypersensitive response (HR) in the absence of any pathogen input. However, when HLP plants showing HR phenotype were challenged with leafrust (Puccinia triticina) they were more resistant than plants of the motherline of comparable developmental stage that did not show spontaneous HR, suggesting that the HLP mutation may confer enhanced resistance to the fungus. In this paper we validate the aforementioned finding in several wheat genetic backgrounds. Two way crosses were performed among the HLP mutant and eight wheat commercial stocks, and third backcross progenies with and without spontaneous HR were challenged with leafrust to investigate the response to the fungus. Backcrosses to cv. Sinvalocho M.A., the mother line, and cv. Purplestraw, highly susceptible to leafrust attack, were used as controls. Third backcross progenies of cvs. Sinvalocho M.A., Purplestraw, Buck Guaraní and Pro INTA Imperial bearing spontaneous HR phenotype were more resistant to the fungal pathogen than third backcross progenies that did not carry the HLP mutation. Other four wheat stocks were as healthy as the HLP mutant. As expected, backcross to the motherline demonstrated that the HLP mutation conferred an additional resistance to the already healthy performance displayed by the motherline at adult plant stage. The introgression of the HLP mutation conferred heigh tened leafrust resistance and caused no kernel weight reduction on the backcrossed progenies. Taken together, these data validate the direct use of this type of mutations in diseaseresis tance breeding.
URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs1003165 This paper focuses on how organizational research inspired by Niklas LUHMANN's systems theory can be epistemologically framed and methodologically designed. Central methodological pillars such as structural and semantic analyses, observing contingencies, explaining trivialities, functional analysis and exploring coupling mechanisms are discussed. Drawing from several empirical studies, we demonstrate that systems theory is a highly efficacious framework for the study of modern organizations, as it permits an uncommon observational perspective that is able to question what is often taken for granted. Finally, we highlight how management can profit from systems theoretical research on organizations. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs1003165
Feeding specializations in Late Triassic fishes
Cristina Lombardo,Andrea Tintori
Museologia Scientifica e Naturalistica , 2005,
Abstract: The ichthyofauna of the Zorzino Limestone represents an important proof of the richness and variety reached by bony fishes during the Norian and, at the same time, it testifies the beginning of the faunal transition which will be realized during the Jurassic. The thousands of specimens and the extraordinary quality of preservation found in the fossiliferous levels of this unit allowed, in the last years, not only to follow such a crucial moment in the evolution of vertebrates, but also to reconstruct the mode of life and the trophic adaptations reached by the different groups, living in the depositional basins. As evidence of this peculiar evolutionary period, the large predators at the highest trophic levels are still represented by ’primitive’ basal actinopterygians; on the contrary, the most derived neopterygians specialized in durophagy, a trophic niche previously almost unexploited by actinopterygians. Within the main trophic categories, anyway, we can find different morphological specializations, which probably allowed the fishes to exploit most of the available trophic resources.

Steepest descent curves of convex functions on surfaces of constant curvature
Cristina Giannotti,Andrea Spiro
Mathematics , 2010,
Abstract: Let S be a complete surface of constant curvature K = + 1 or -1, i.e. the sphere S^2 or the Lobachevskij plane L^2, and D a bounded convex subset of S. If S = S^2, assume also diameter (D) < pi/2. It is proved that the length of any steepest descent curve of a quasi-convex function in D is less than or equal to the perimeter of D. This upper bound is actually proved for the class of G-curves, a family of curves that naturally includes all steepest descent curves. In case S = S^2, it is also proved the existence of G-curves, whose length is equal to the perimeter of their convex hull, showing that the above estimate is indeed optimal. The results generalize theorems by Manselli and Pucci on steepest descent curves in the Euclidean plane.
The role of certification in the Brazilian fruit sector
Dorr, Andrea Cristina;Grote, Ulrike;
Revista de Economia Contemporanea , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-98482009000300007
Abstract: certification systems play an important role in any market that is burdened with a high degree of information asymmetry and quality uncertainty. thus, producers and exporters of fresh fruit in developing countries like brazil are increasingly required to demonstrate the safety and traceability of their produce up to the consumption stage. this paper aims at presenting a comparative analysis of the different certification schemes applied to fruit production in brazil. a survey of 303 grape and mango farmers was conducted in 2006 in the juazeiro and petrolina regions of the s?o francisco valley. the results of the certification schemes adopted by grape farmers show that globalgap certified ones have higher productivity. the income of farmers with one certificate is higher than that of those with two certificates. the comparative analysis of small and medium farms concludes that there is no evidence of the marginalization of small farmers.

Abstract: Introduction: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies obtained during the initial staging of patients affected by uterine cervical cancer were compared to the final histological report after surgery. Methods: Data were retrieved from published papers. Results: MRI detection of lymph node metastases shows a sensitivity of 49.3% (1209 patients) and a specificity of 87.7% (1182 patients). Parametrial involvement detection has 66.2% sensitivity (1288 patients) and 83.6% specificity (1282 patients). MRI tumor size evaluation shows significant error. Even detection of over 1 cm diameter primary tumor can fail. MRI appears promising in the detection of myometrial and endometrial involvement. Conclusions: Primary uterine cervical cancer evaluation with routine MRI has a limited accuracy especially in the detection of lymph node involvement and parametrial invasion. It is not sensitive enough to replace histology of dissected nodes and parametria. Tumor size estimation is imprecise. Detection of myometrial and endometrial invasion using MRI might be possible. Awareness of MRI limitations is crucial in primary cervical cancer staging.

Abstract:

Objective: cervical spondylotic myelopathy is a progressive degenerative cervical spine disease. During later stages of segmental degeneration, kyphosis of the cervical spine can occur and further compromise the spinal cord and nerve roots. Optimal surgical approach remains controversial. The choice to perform an anterior, posterior or combined approach depends on: sagittal alignment, number of involved levels, main compression localization, and clinical status. The anterior approach is recommended when compression involves primarily anterior horn of spinal cord. Methods: between January 2001 and December 2005, 121 patients (42 F, 79 M, mean age 62 years) were operated for cervical spondylosis (98 myelopathy, 23 radiculopathy). Anterior surgical approach was performed in 81 patients. 63 patients were operated performing multilevel discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and 18 patients performing corpectomy and fusion and anterior plating (ACCF). Preoperative documentation collected consisted of cervical X-ray (static-dynamic), cervical spine TC, cervical MRI. Clinical documentation permitted us to obtained clinical status of each patient based on JOA, NDI and VAS. A Clinical and radiological follow-up was performed at 1 month, 3 months, 1 year, 6 years, 12 years. Results: the fusion rate was calculated based on the static and dynamic X-ray
