Melo,Cristiane Magalhes de; Oliveira,Djenane Ramalho de;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232011000500022
Abstract: the scope of this study was to understand the motives that lead adult women to use appetite inhibitors and to establish, from a gender perspective, how these women relate to their own bodies. it was structured around the principles of qualitative research, and the methods of data collection were semi-structured interviews and direct observation. the informants were six women who used appetite inhibitors. the results indicated that images, publicity and social networks contribute significantly to the creation of new standards of physical appearance as well as lifestyles, which establish appearance (a slim body) and a happy marriage as the desired model. the slim body is represented as something able to alter the temperament of the individual, in other words a fat person is an unhappy person and a slim person is a happy person. the study shows that it is in the body per se that the social role destined for women is produced and reproduced.

Abstract: management alterations induce significant modifications on organic matter quality and quantity, on n quantity and forms and on the mineralization process. the aim of this work was to study the influence of straw on the n mineralization rates of the n-nh4+ and n-no3 forms during the decomposition of residues of two sorghum genotypes. the experimental design consisted of a 3x2x3 complete block outline, including two soil managements, three cultural residues and two nitrogen levels, with three replications. percolation tubes were prepared with 20 g of soil mixed with 20 g of sand. each tube with soil and sand received 0.1g residual straw from the two sorghum genotypes, with and without 50 mg n kg-1 in the form of ammonium nitrate. a control treatment was maintained without straw in the presence and absence of n. after an initial seven day incubation period, n was extracted weekly, over 49 days, using 100 ml of 0.01 mol l-1 cacl2. the forms n-nh4+ and n-no3- were determined spectroscoptically (uv/vis) in the percolated extracts. n mineralization dependent on sorghum genotype and applied n. sorghum straw influenced time and amount of n mineralized. the n-nh4+/ n-no3- ratio showed variability during the incubation time as influenced by the incorporated residue. that ratio increased up to fifteen days of incubation time and decreased in subsequent periods. without residues the mineralization potential was higher in the n-no3 form.

Abstract: Insect galls may be study models to test the distribution of pectins and arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs) and their related functions during plant cell cycles. These molecules are herein histochemically and immunocitochemically investigated in the kidney-shaped gall induced by Baccharopelma dracunculifoliae (Psyllidae) on leaves of Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae) on developmental basis. The homogalacturonans (HGAs) (labeled by JIM5) and the arabinans (labeled by LM6) were detected either in non-galled leaves or in young galls, and indicated stiffening of epidermal cell walls, which is an important step for cell redifferentiation. The labeling of HGAs by JIM7 changed from young to senescent stage, with an increase in the rigidity of cell walls, which is important for the acquaintance of the final gall shape and for the mechanical opening of the gall. The variation on the degree of HGAs during gall development indicated differential PMEs activity during gall development. The epitopes recognized by LM2 (AGP glycan) and LM5 (1–4-β-D-galactans) had poor alterations from non-galled leaves towards gall maturation and senescence. Moreover, the dynamics of pectin and AGPs on two comparable mature kidney-shaped galls on B. dracunculifolia and on B. reticularia revealed specific peculiarities. Our results indicate that similar gall morphotypes in cogeneric host species may present distinct cell responses in the subcelular level, and also corroborate the functions proposed in literature for HGAs.
Magalhes, Mauro de Oliveira;
Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-166X2003000100004
Abstract: the article examines the historical and philosophical background of occidental thinking in order to make explicit the tacit beliefs about the nature of knowledge behind the social interactions with emphasis on the academic and scientific fields. the consequences of the ideas and attitudes inherent in the philosophical tradition started by socrates and plato on the typical mode of thinking and problem-solving of our culture are analyzed. the task of knowing is described as a discipline of dialogue and social construction.

Abstract: theories of human development emphasize the importance of childhood experiences in the formation of personality. it is believed that the role assumed by the child within the family has implications for his later adult life. adler proposed that the order of birth significantly influences vocational behavior and recent research has provided support for this idea. the present study has the objective of investigating differences in vocational interests among the following categories, by order of birth: only children, firstborn, middle children and lastborn. the subjects comprised 435 college students of both sexes with ages ranging from 17 to 56 years (mean=26.9). the subjects answered measures of vocational interests and a brief demographic questionnaire to define the order of birth category. the scores for their interests were compared by means of variance analysis. the results revealed that only children showed greater interest in scientific investigation than middle children and less entrepreneurial interest than the firstborn; middle children displayed greater social interest than only children and firstborn. the results suggest that individuals develop distinct vocational processes depending on the order of birth, and therefore the use of order of birth information is recommended for vocational counseling.
Oliveira, Rosely Magalhes de;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1998000600006
Abstract: this paper discusses popular participation in health from the point of view of an experience in dengue epidemic control in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the city of rio de janeiro. it refers specifically to a social movement called "se liga leopoldina", combining professionals (from health services and public schools) and members of popular organizations from the suburban neighborhoods served by the leopoldina railway. the paper reviews the ideas motivating actions undertaken by the movement, principally the role of popular organizations in the control of endemics. it calls attention to the danger of preconceived notions when analyzing participation by members of popular organizations in the social movement. the author also calls attention to the fact that social scientists researching social movements should focus on being part of a wider social network of conviviality rather than seeing their role as educating members of the popular organization. such networks should seek to strengthen and expand social support for the endemic control process.
Magalhes, Mauro de Oliveira;
Psico-USF , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-82712012000100012
Abstract: occupational interests are important correlates of career-related behaviors and attitudes. however, the relationships between occupational preferences and attitudes toward the employer organization were not properly investigated. this research investigated the relation between occupational interests and organizational commitment. the six categories of interest described by holland (realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, conventional) and the three-dimensional model of organizational commitment of meyer and allen (affective, normative and instrumental dimensions) were utilized. a sample of 119 men and 74 women, graduated in different areas, ages between 26 and 57 years, employed in private organizations of the south of brazil, participated in the study. the enterprising interest showed association with a greater affective based commitment. the instrumental commitment showed higher scores in workers with artistic and enterprising interests. it is suggested that personality differences and career values related to occupational interests favor instrumental or affective attitudes towards the employer organization.
