Abstract: La fasciolasis es una enfermedad parasitaria producida por el tremátodo digeneo Fasciola hepática. Durante la fase crónica de la enfermedad los parásitos pueden entran en los conductos biliares, y ser causa de ictericia obstructiva, colangitis, pancreatitis y otras complicaciones. Se presenta el caso clínico de una paciente intervenida por sospecha de colelitiasis y colédocolitiasis, a la cual durante la exploración coledociana intraoperatoria le fueron extraídos múltiples parásitos adultos de Fasciola hepática. Este hallazgo sólo fue aclarado posteriormente en la biopsia diferida. Abstract: La dismetría de la pelvis es frecuente en los adolescentes y puede ser un factor que provoque dolores en la columna vertebral y estar asociada a escoliosis funcionales de la región lumbar. Estas disfunciones de la columna vertebral producen incapacidad laboral, son de alta prevalencia en el mundo. Este problema de salud pública es de origen multifactorial afecta a la mayoría de las personas principalmente en la edad media de la vida. El propósito del estudio fue conocer cómo se comportan nuestros adolescentes con respecto a la variable dismetría pélvica. Para ello se analizaron 49 radiografías panorámicas de columna vertebral, de escolares entre 13 y 17 a os de ambos géneros, 24 hombres y 25 mujeres, de la ciudad de Temuco, Chile. Del total de sujetos, 33 presentaron algún grado de desnivel pélvico lo que corresponde al 67,3% de los individuos. En 27 sujetos estaban en el rango 1 a 10 mm y 4 sujetos en el rango de 11 a 15 mm. En 33 sujetos tenían algún grado de desviación de la columna lumbar en el plano frontal y 16 sujetos no se observó desviación. Es importante conocer estos parámetros en nuestra población adolescente, para incorporar a la educación formal la prevención en todos los aspectos de la vida y así disminuir la sintomatología, costos de atención y rehabilitación. The aim of this work was to study the performance of our teenagers with respect to the mentioned variables. We analyzed 49 panoramic radiographs of the spines of schoolchildren between 13 and 17 years, 24 male and 25 female in the city of Temuco, Chile. Of total subjects 33 showed some degree of pelvic tilt which corresponds to 67.3% of subjects.. In 27 cases subjects were in the 1 to 10mm range and 4 subjects in the 11 to 15mm range. In 16 subjects no deviation was observed in frontal plane and 33 subjects had some degree of deviation. It is important to know these parameters in our adolescent population, to include formal education prevention in all aspects of life and to reduce the symptoms and costs of care and rehabilitation.

Abstract: La Antártica se caracteriza por presentar condiciones ambientales extremas, lo cual limita el establecimiento de las plantas vasculares. Dentro de dichas características ambientales están las bajas temperaturas, corta estación de crecimiento y el estrés hídrico y nutricional. La baja disponibilidad hídrica ha sido sugerida como la principal limitante para el éxito de establecimiento, debido a que afecta de manera negativa las respuestas fisiológicas y reproductivas de las plantas. Colobanthus quitensis (Kunth) Bartl. (Caryophyllaceae) es una de las dos plantas vasculares nativas que habitan la Antártica Marítima y se ha demostrado que su desempe o fisiológico y reclutamiento es afectado negativamente por el estrés hídrico del suelo. La plasticidad fenotípica y la adaptación local serían dos de las principales estrategias de C. quitensis para lidiar con las adversas condiciones ambientales que predominan en el continente antártico. Se ha documentado que, bajo un escenario futuro de cambio climático, la disponibilidad hídrica en la Antártica aumentaría entre un 30-40%, mejorando las condiciones para el establecimiento. En el presente trabajo evaluamos mediante un experimento de jardín común, realizado en cámaras de crecimiento, la plasticidad morfo-fisiológica y el esfuerzo reproductivo en individuos de C. quitensis provenientes de dos sitios en las Islas Shetland, bajo un escenario simulado de cambio climático (aumento en un 40% de la disponibilidad hídrica) y bajo la situación actual (disponibilidad hídrica registrada en los sitios de origen). En general, los individuos de C. quitensis de ambos sitios presentaron evidencia de plasticidad, aumentando su eficiencia fotoquímica, largo y ancho foliar, y esfuerzo reproductivo bajo la condición de aumento en la disponibilidad hídrica. La magnitud del aumento en la respuesta plástica fue mayor en aquellos individuos provenientes del sitio más árido en comparación a sus con-específicos del sitio más húmedo. Si los actuales patrones de cambio climático se mantienen, las condiciones abióticas podrían volverse más favorables para C. quitensis, mejorando su desempe o ecofisiológico y permitiendo la expansión de su rango de distribución sobre la Antártica. Atypical presentation of pseudomembranous colitis localized in adenomatous polyps

Abstract: The most frequent cause of pseudomembranous colitis is Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection. This type of colitis is characterized by an endoscopic pattern of numerous small, yellowish or whitish plaques diffusely distributed, which typically compromises the rectum extending to proximal colon. Occasionally, the pseudomembranes compromise only the transverse or right colon, but their exclusive localization over polyps has not been reported. In this case report we have described a patient with symptoms compatible with C. difficile infection and positive for C. difficile toxigenic culture. Colonoscopy examination showed two small polyps with a whitish surface, and histopathological analysis confirmed them to be pseudomembranes over tubular adenomas. The rest of the colonic mucosa was normal and no other cause was demonstrated. We suggest that this particular distribution might be due to a higher affinity for dysplastic cells such as adenomatous polyps of colon by C. difficile and/or its toxins.

Response to Long-Term NaHCO3-Derived Alkalinity in Model Lotus japonicus Ecotypes Gifu B-129 and Miyakojima MG-20: Transcriptomic Profiling and Physiological Characterization

Abstract: The current knowledge regarding transcriptomic changes induced by alkalinity on plants is scarce and limited to studies where plants were subjected to the alkaline salt for periods not longer than 48 h, so there is no information available regarding the regulation of genes involved in the generation of a new homeostatic cellular condition after long-term alkaline stress. Lotus japonicus is a model legume broadly used to study many important physiological processes including biotic interactions and biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study, we characterized phenotipically the response to alkaline stress of the most widely used L. japonicus ecotypes, Gifu B-129 and MG-20, and analyzed global transcriptome of plants subjected to 10 mM NaHCO3 during 21 days, by using the Affymetrix Lotus japonicus GeneChip?. Plant growth assessment, gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll a fluorescence transient (OJIP) analysis and metal accumulation supported the notion that MG-20 plants displayed a higher tolerance level to alkaline stress than Gifu B-129. Overall, 407 and 459 probe sets were regulated in MG-20 and Gifu B-129, respectively. The number of probe sets differentially expressed in roots was higher than that of shoots, regardless the ecotype. Gifu B-129 and MG-20 also differed in their regulation of genes that could play important roles in the generation of a new Fe/Zn homeostatic cellular condition, synthesis of plant compounds involved in stress response, protein-degradation, damage repair and root senescence, as well as in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and TCA. In addition, there were differences between both ecotypes in the expression patterns of putative transcription factors that could determine distinct arrangements of flavonoid and isoflavonoid compounds. Our results provided a set of selected, differentially expressed genes deserving further investigation and suggested that the L. japonicus ecotypes could constitute a useful model to search for common and distinct tolerance mechanisms to long-term alkaline stress response in plants.
Synthesis of a New ent-Cyclozonarone Angular Analog, and Comparison of Its Cytotoxicity and Apoptotic Effects with ent-Cyclozonarone

Abstract: The synthesis of a newangular analog 11 of cyclozonarone was achieved via Diels-Alder reaction between a sesquiterpene-1,3-diene and 1,4-benzoquinone. The cytotoxic activity of ent-cyclozonarone [(+)- 10] and the angular (?)-cyclozonarone analog 11 has been determined in three human cancer cell lines and in normal fibroblasts using the sulforhodamine B assay. The analyzed isomers induce cell death in different cancer cell lines by eliciting nuclear condensation and fragmentation, decreasing mitochondrial membrane permeability and increasing caspase-3 activity, all traits indicating apoptosis, with the effects of (+)- 10 being stronger than those of 11 in all cases.

Abstract: The steel used in the minerals processing as grinding media (balls or bars), is an important input in terms of cost of the process. Considering the importance of the steel consumption in these processes, this work is guided to evaluate to laboratory scale the effect of the anions present in the industrial waters on the electrochemical corrosion of grinding media. Tests in electrochemical cell, were accomplished measuring potential and corrosion current to four electrodes that were manufactured using sufficiently pure samples of chalcopirite, bornite, enargite and steel ball. The ions used in the tests were chlorides, sulfates, nitrates and carbonates in concentrations from 1 to 180 ppm in individual form or in mixtures, according to the levels measurement of these in industrial waters. El acero utilizado como medios de molienda (bolas o barras) en el procesamiento de minerales, es una materia prima importante desde el punto de vista de costo del proceso. Considerando la importancia del consumo de acero en estos procesos, este trabajo está orientado a evaluar, a escala de laboratorio, el efecto de los aniones presentes en las aguas industriales sobre la corrosión electroquímica de medios de molienda. Para ello se realizaron ensayos en celda electroquímica, midiendo potenciales y corrientes de corrosión a cuatro electrodos que se fabricaron utilizando muestras suficientemente puras de calcopirita, bornita, enargita y. un trozo de bola de acero. Los iones utilizados en los ensayos fueron cloruros, sulfatos, nitratos y carbonaros en concentraciones desde 1 a 180 ppm, en forma individual o en mezclas de ellos, de acuerdo a la medición de niveles de éstos en aguas industriales de proceso.

Abstract: francis hutcheson is known as a proto-utilitarian. adam smith, though, his most prominent student an successor on the chair of moral philosophy in the university of glasgow, focuses on some different trends of his teacher's ethics and founds, based on the same sentimentalism, a completely different theory of morals. on this paper i explore what aspects of hutcheson s ethics -particularly those of 'sympathy' and the 'impartial spectator'- where already present in his theory, and how smith develops those intuitions in order to introduce a moment of rationality in moral judgments, whereby he is able to construct a theory that includes practical reasoning, without betraying the scottish sentimentalist tradition.
