Film fraction in a vertical circular Venturi scrubber

Abstract: the liquid film affects significantly the venturi scrubber efficiency. film fraction was measured in a vertically mounted laboratory scale venturi scrubber with a 0.020 m throat diameter. the liquid was injected at the throat by one to six 0.001 m holes. the throat gas velocity varied from 50 to 90 m/s and the relative jet penetration varied between 0.05 and 0.85. a special test section with a slot was used to extract the film. the test section could be placed at different axial positions, allowing measurements at 0.0075, 0.0275 and 0.0675 m after the injection point. results showed that film fraction varies as a function of the relative jet penetration and with distance from the injection point. there exists an optimal relative jet penetration (between 0.25 and 0.40) which minimizes film fraction. film fraction increased with axial distance in the range studied, up to 3.375 throat diameters after the injection point.

Abstract: venturi scrubbers are high efficiency gas cleaners in which suspended particles are removed from gas streams by droplets formed by liquid atomisation, usually in the venturi throat. the size of the droplets formed is of fundamental importance to the performance of the equipment, both in terms of pressure drop and collection efficiency. in this study, drop sizes in a cylindrical laboratory scale venturi scrubber were measured using a laser diffraction technique. gas velocity and liquid to gas ratios varied from 50 to 90 m/s and 0.5 to 2.0 l/m3, respectively. water was inserted as perpendicular jets at the beginning of the throat. measurements were performed at three positions: two located along the throat, and the last one at the end of the diffuser. the data presented here are a typical example of pneumatic atomisation and can be relevant to other industrial applications such as combustion and engine technology. finally, results are compared to available correlations and the validity of these equations is discussed.

Abstract: the appropriate selection and use of spray nozzles are essential for the correct pesticides application. the objective of this study was to evaluate the droplet spectrum of hydraulic standard flat fan and hollow cone spray nozzles, with different nominal flows. in laboratory, droplet spectrum, using a real time laser particle size analyzer, was measured with the operating pressure ranging from 200 to 400 kpa, for flat fan, and from 400 to 600 kpa, for hollow cone. a theoretical study was also carried out on the horizontal distance traveled by droplets of known size. the hollow cone nozzles presented smaller droplets in relation to the flat fan, and provided larger droplets densities deposited on surface objective. all nozzles presented great density of deposited droplets, superior to 110 droplets cm-2. however, the drift potential was great, mainly regarding the hollow cone nozzles, requesting, therefore, strategies for its reduction. it is possible to estimate the horizontal distance traveled by droplets of known size.

Abstract: this article presents the development of an integrated system of hardware and software, whose objective is to serve as a platform for developing and executing new power system protection algorithms on a real-time environment. the proposed system aims to reduce development time of new protection functions, enabling real-time analysis in opposition of only computer simulations, as can be typically found in technical literature. in this work, generator protection functions were implemented and tested, and the results were compared with a commercial relay, showing the feasibility and dependability of the proposed system.

Abstract: experimental results on the performance of a laboratory scale rectangular venturi scrubber in the removal of fine mineral particles from a confined air stream are presented, and a new correlation is proposed and evaluated. the scrubber was operated with air velocities in the throat varying from 58 m/s to 75 m/s and liquid flow rates varying from 280 ml/min to 900 ml/min. liquid was injected as a jet emerging from a 1.0 mm orifice at the throat. results for dust collection grade efficiency varied from 87% to 98% for particles from 0.1 μm to 2.0 μm.

Abstract: this research presents a method for frequency estimation in power system using adaptive filter based on the least mean square algorithm (lms). in power system analysis, the three-phase voltages are converted to a complex signal with the application of α β-transform whose complex form was submitted to the algorithm of adaptive filtering. the computational simulations were accomplished using the software atp. this utilization had as objective to generate data for the most severe and different situations for the verification and analysis of the proposed methodology. the results were to those of a commercial relay for validation, showing the advantages of the new method.

Abstract: considering that ethics at school and the education of students' character have been discussed all over the world, this paper focuses its subject based on three axes. the first one presents some philosophical views on morality and ethics in order to investigate whether or not theoretical distinctions have social impacts. the second axis is related to the foundations of morality and ethics as practical disciplines. the main question is: should general principles legitimate moral/ethical judgments or vice versa? finally the role assumed by school in the ethical/moral education of the citizen is explored. both educational conceptions as those owing to comenius and dewey and the homogenizing pedagogical practices are discussed, as well as the ethical proposals included in the parametros curriculares nacionais (national curricular guidelines)

Abstract: this article discusses the work on ethics in school (primary and secondary education) with basis on a critique of the model of demonstrative rationality, prevalent since the advent of modernity. alternatively, it presents another model, the argumentative rationality one, which is discussed with basis on the approaches taken by cha?m perelman, lucie olbrechts-tyteca and michel meyer. the first two authors have formulated a theory of argumentation whose goal is to support the typical reasoning of human and social sciences, knowledge areas in which typical procedures of demonstrative rationality, such as deduction and calculation do not apply. meyer stresses the problematizing nature of argumentative rationality, placing the rhetoric as a means of negotiating the distance between individuals in regard to certain issues. this theoretical framework is complemented by the philosophy of pluralism appointed by perelman as a counterpoint to the worldviews grounded on unitary conceptions of truth, called monisms. in this theoretical framework, i discuss the universalistic ethical concept of kant and the relativism proposed by the ethics of aesthetics defended by maffesoli. in a second topic, ethics in school education is problematized in view of the question: how can one shape the character of the student without falling into some sort of indoctrination? to the extent that ethics and morality relate to this question, i discuss how the two terms have been understood and i propose to regard them as interchangeable instances. the conclusions i present based on these discussions aim not to solve the problems inherent in the habits and attitudes of students, but to contribute to teachers' reflection about their teaching practices.
An hybrid architecture for clusters analysis: rough setstheory and self-organizing map artificial neural network

Abstract: the database of real world contains a huge volume of data and among them there are hidden piles of interesting relations that are actually very hard to find out. the knowledge discovery in databases (kdd) appears as a possible solution to find out such relations aiming at converting information into knowledge. however, not all data presented in the bases are useful to a kdd. usually, data are processed before being presented to a kdd aiming at reducing the amount of data and also at selecting more relevant data to be used by the system. this work consists in the use of rough sets theory, in order to pre-processing data to be presented to self-organizing map neural network (hybrid architecture) for clusters analysis. experiments' results evidence the better performance using the hybrid architecture than self-organizing map. the paper also presents all phases of the kdd process.
