Fitopatologia Brasileira , 2004,

Abstract: a case-control study of parkinson's disease (pd) was conducted in the city of rio de janeiro based on the assumption that neurotoxins with secondary parkinsonian action may be related to the development of parkinson's disease. ninety-two subjects with pd and 110 controls were queried through a questionnaire in order to investigate possible risk factors for the disease. the following factors were studied: herbicides/pesticides, exposure to chemicals, ingestion of drugs with secondary pd effects, rural life, water well source, family history, cranial trauma and cigarette smoking. study of mentioned factors was achieved through univariate, stratified and multivariate analyses. univariate and multivariate analyses demonstrated that pd was positively associated with family history (or = 14.5; ci = 2.98 - 91.38), with the use of drugs with secondary pd action (or = 11.01; ci = 3.41 - 39.41) and with exposure to chemical agents (or = 5.87; ci = 1.48 - 27.23). pd was found to be inversely associated with cigarette smoking (or = 0.39; ic = 0.16 - 0.95). stratified analysis only confirmed family history and drug use, besides demonstrating that cigarette consumption could be a protection factor, when aforementioned factors were involved. this study might be a warning as to the cares that need to be taken regarding drug use and occupational exposure to chemical agents, as both types of substances present secondary pd action.

Abstract: this paper deals with the use of the conjugate gradient method of function estimation for the simultaneous identification of two unknown boundary heat fluxes in parallel plate channels. the fluid flow is assumed to be laminar and hydrodynamically developed. temperature measurements taken inside the channel are used in the inverse analysis. the accuracy of the present solution approach is examined by using simulated measurements containing random errors, for strict cases involving functional forms with discontinuities and sharp-corners for the unknown functions. three different types of inverse problems are addressed in the paper, involving the estimation of: (i) spatially dependent heat fluxes; (ii) time-dependent heat fluxes; and (iii) time and spatially dependent heat fluxes.

Abstract: two series of experiments with sugarcane varieties were conducted in the state of s?o paulo in the same areas where sugar and alcohol factories plant their own sugarcane. twenty-five varieties were compared in a series of 10 experiments in partially bal-anced 5 x 5 lattices. other 17 varieties were studied in a series of 6 experiments in randomized blocks. the objective was to choose the best varieties for cultivation, among some varieties that were already planted and some other obtained either from the breeding program of the instituto agron?mico (campinas) or recently introduced in the state. the experiments were planted in 1970 and three harvests were obtained: plant-cane, first ratoon and second ratoon. results showed that the varieties na56-79, iac52-326, iac57-259, cp51-22, iac52-150 and iac58-480 can be cultivated in the state of s?o paulo, besides iac51-205 and cb41-76. na56-79 was superior to cb41-76 in sugar yield per area. the others did not differ from the controls iac51-205, iac50-134 and cb41-76. iac52-150, na56-79 and iac58-480 showed higher sugar content. iac58-480, cp51-22 and iac52-326 showed the best ratooning.

Abstract: five patients aged 12 to 16 years old were admitted between 1987 and 1994 at the neurological unit because of uncontrolled epilepsy. they had had a normal development until the adolescence, when a history of poor school performance and memory difficulty started. it is emphasized the clinical sequence of dementia followed by tonic-clonic seizures and myoclonus, the positive family history and the difficult therapeutic management, in spite of multiple anticonvulsant combinations, including sodium valproate and clonazepam. the clinical and laboratory differential diagnosis were discussed to show that similar cases should be submitted to skin biopsy looking for lafora bodies in apocrine and eccrine glands. however, the liver is considered as the most reliable site for the biopsy, which in our study showed positivity in four out of the five cases.
