Textos e hipertextos: procurando o equilíbrio
Coscarelli, Carla Viana;
Linguagem em (Dis)curso , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1518-76322009000300006
Abstract: this paper discusses the question of "to what extent do we need to treat hypertexts differently from texts, as far as textuality features are concerned?". i argue in favor of the idea that every text is a hypertext and that every reading activity is a hypertextual process. i believe that if the text is well written, that is to say, if it is adequate to the reader, and if the reader is proficient, the reading process will generate satisfactory results. badly written texts and non-proficient readers will generate bad results, no matter the format of the text (print or hypertext). therefore, we need to teach our students to deal with different texts, from different genres, in distinct environments, including the digital one. this article presents elements of the digital environment that can be found in portuguese textbooks, in order to verify the contribution of these materials to the students' digital literacy.
Examining Reading Comprehension through the use of Continuous Texts and Hypertexts
Coscarelli,Carla Viana;
Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal , 2007,
Abstract: in this paper we present the results of an experiment that aims to verify the influence of the presentation format - hypertext or continuous - in reading comprehension. a group of students, who are familiar with computers, read an advertisement in one of the formats: hypertext or continuous. after reading the text the students answered questions that aimed to verify some reading skills: global comprehension, retrieving information, making inferences and giving opinion. both the text and the answers given by the students were analyzed using the theory of mental spaces proposed by fauconnier and turner (2002). although a quantitative analyses of the answers has pointed to an advantage of the hypertext format, qualitative analyses show that, regardless of the presentation format, the students could understand the advertisement, and were able to deal with different mental spaces in a very creative and efficient way.

Bonamino, Alicia;Coscarelli, Carla;Franco, Creso;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302002008100006
Abstract: this paper presents the different notions of literacy that underpin the saeb 1999 and pisa 2000 assessments. it also brings forward an overview of these large scale assessment examinations that includes the reading skills that both test. comparing such skills allowed us to seize the concept of literacy adopted in each. we finally discuss some of the probable implications of literacy evaluation on elementary school.
Ribeiro, Ana Elisa;Coscarelli, Carla Viana;
Educa??o em Revista , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-46982010000300016
Abstract: based on an analysis of the saeb's matrix on portuguese language, widely used in evaluations in brazil, we discuss in this paper the relationship of this matrix to reading practices and printed writing culture. we also propose a discussion about the complexity of abilities that compose the matrix, as far as real reading practices are con cerned. we propose the necessity to make a clear distinction between a matrix for eval uation purposes and a matrix designed for teaching purposes. it is also very important to consider aspects related to the multimodal and digital literacy as a crucial part of the act of reading.
Spatial uncertainty assessment in modelling reference evapotranspiration at regional scale

Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) & Discussions (HESSD) , 2010,
Abstract: Evapotranspiration is one of the major components of the water balance and has been identified as a key factor in hydrological modelling. For this reason, several methods have been developed to calculate the reference evapotranspiration (ET0). In modelling reference evapotranspiration it is inevitable that both model and data input will present some uncertainty. Whatever model is used, the errors in the input will propagate towards the output of the calculated ET0. Neglecting the information about estimation uncertainty, however, may lead to improper decision-making and water resources management. One geostatistical approach to spatial analysis is stochastic simulation, which draws alternative and equally probable, realizations of a regionalized variable. Differences between the realizations provide a measure of spatial uncertainty and allows to carry out an error propagation analysis. The aim of this paper is to assess spatial uncertainty of a monthly reference evapotranspiration model resulting from the uncertainties in the input attributes (mainly temperature) at a regional scale. A case study was presented for the Calabria region (southern Italy). Temperature data were jointly simulated by a conditional turning bands simulation with elevation as external drift and 500 realizations were generated. Among the evapotranspiration models, the Hargreaves-Samani model was used. The ET0 was then estimated for each set of the 500 realizations of the input variables, and the ensemble of the model outputs was used to infer the reference evapotranspiration probability distribution function. This approach allowed for the delineation of the areas characterised by greater uncertainty, to improve supplementary sampling strategies and ET0 value predictions.
