Gonzo Strategies of Deceit: An Interview with Joaquin Segura
Brett W. Schultz
continent. , 2011,
Abstract: The interview that follows is a dialogue between artist and gallerist with the intent of unearthing the artist’s working strategies for a general public. Joaquin Segura is at once an anomaly in Mexico’s contemporary art scene at the same time as he is one of the most emblematic representatives of a larger shift toward a post-national identity among its youngest generation of artists. If Mexico looks increasingly like a foreclosed home burning to the ground, Segura could likely be the one walking away, charred matchstick between thumb and forefinger and shit-eating grin on his face. His corrosive attacks on institutions, ideologies, and power reflect a deep general distrust of authority, increasingly evident within the work of younger Mexican artists. It is perhaps most directly the result of President Calderon’s deeply unpopular war against the cartels but no doubt equally the product of decades upon decades of rampant corruption and errant policy within Mexico.
Orbital Contour: Videos by Craig Dongoski
Paul Boshears
continent. , 2011,
Abstract: Interview, video, and images. What is the nature of sound? What is the nature of volume? William James, in attempting to address these simple questions wrote, “The voluminousness of the feeling seems to bear very little relation to the size of the ocean that yields it. The ear and eye are comparatively minute organs, yet they give us feelings of great volume” (203--4, itals. original). This subtle extensivity of sensation finds its peer in the subtle yet significant influence of habituated action upon our lives. This expansive quality of habit-making is what Craig Dongoski's bodies of work enable us to appreciate.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to identify the traditional Turkish motifs and its relations among present industrial designs. Traditional Turkish motifs played a very important role in 16th century onwards. The arts of the Ottoman Empire were used because of their symbolic meanings and unique styles. When we examine these motifs we encounter; Tiger Stripe, Three Spot ( intemani), Rumi, Hatayi, Pen , Cloud, Crescent, Star, Crown, Hyacinth, Tulip and Carnation motifs. Nowadays, Turkish designers have begun to use these traditional Turkish motifs in their designs so as to create differences and awareness in the world design. The examples of these industrial designs, using the Turkish motifs, have survived and have Ottoman heritage and historical value. In this study, the Turkish motifs will be examined along with their focus on contemporary Turkish industrial designs used today.

Cornici di tortura Lo scandalo di Abu Ghraib come rituale mediatizzato tra fotogiornalismo e arte contemporanea
Marco Solaroli
Altre Modernità , 2010,
Abstract: This paper deals with the scandal of Abu Ghraib. The diffusion of the torture photographs is analyzed as a peculiar form of mediatized ritual, which has cristallized them in the public memory and performatively activated a number of practices of creative re-contextualization and symbolic re-articulation. In particular, the paper problematizes a wide range of forms of artistic representations of the torture photographs, according to three main analytical dimensions: inter-iconic translation, authorial intentions, degree of institutionalization.
Una experiència didàctica amb el collage
Joaquim Cantalozella i Planas
Observar , 2008,
Joan Miró’s point of departure when he painted the eighteen Peintures d’après collage in 1933 is used to invite us to reflect on some of the keys of contemporary painting. Terms such as appropriation, authorship or author’s subjectivity come into play when the collage is used as model. This learning activity combines individual and group work with the aim of reflecting on pictorial language.
Pintura, una matèria interdisciplinària. Metodologies docents
Joaquim Cantalozella i Planas,Marta Negre i Busó
Observar , 2009,
The changes to the bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts have provided an opportunity to reassess the organization of courses that involve practical work in workshops and to introduce improvements in the teaching methodologies used. Painting will now share a workshop space with teaching in Drawing and Sculpture, and in the near future, with teaching in Image. This new structure will increase the possibilities for interdisciplinary study and will provide greater flexibility. This article presents a series of reflections on teaching in the Painting workshops in the first two years of the bachelor’s degree, and considers a series of methodological proposals aimed to introduce improvements.

CeROArt : Conservation, Exposition, Restauration d'Objets d'Art , 2009,
