Mobility in Suburban Sprawl and the New Urbanism in the USA: introduction of a foreign model in Chile?
Mawromatis P., Constantino
Revista de Urbanismo , 2002, DOI: doi: 10.5354/0717-5051.2002.12949
Abstract: Intentando soslayar la convencional confrontación dialéctica entre el Modernismo y el Post-Modernismo por parecer insuficiente y hoy sólo académica, este artículo refiere cuatro modelos que más que históricos son paradigmáticos, de modo de develar la coyuntura del presente de la arquitectura ante la paradoja del pasado redescubierto que vuelve a ser una nueva propuesta./Suburban sprawl has been the most widely used model in the United States during the 20th century. This manner of planning has greatly influenced the mobility within the metropolitan areas in the U. S. creating an increasing demand for new infrastructure thus diminishing the standard of living of the inhabitants. Because of this there has been new propositions that suggest to work with neo-traditional planning. In Chile the suburban expansion that has been taking place during the last two decades, mainly due to the posible profits of real estate investments, can be seen as thoughtless attempt to import a foreign model, thus setting aside negative consequences that might affect the future development of our urban settlements.
Jakriborg, Sweden: a case of urban design in the scenario of neo-traditional movements.

As a part of a critical approach to sprawl in contemporary urban growth, diverse urban planning and design movements emerge, some of which seek to provide better living conditions and sustainability by engaging in neo-traditional planning and design. Unlike the urban culturalists, these currents are based on an essentially pragmatic body of principles that gathers together the best of the past, acknowledges the present, to project them towards the challenges of future urban development. The case of Jakriborg, Sweden, discussed in this article, is a particular experience that allows a better understanding of the debate on the pertinence of neo-traditional movements in the actual context and in its challenges. It constitutes an experience that seems to favor a historicist imagery over further considerations, while nevertheless, bringing up other aspects that enrich their design proposal.
The divorce between the instruments of planning and urban morphology in the metropolitan perimeter of Santiago de Chile. The case of Maipú.

The public realm in suburban Santiago is a result of restrictive codes applied to private property. Spatial qualities, and morphological identity, are completely overlooked by urban laws.

/This paper describes and analyzes the process of design and implementation of an UrbanDesign Studio for third year architecture students at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Chile. This academic experience has allowed the faculty to pass on to the students all the necessary tools to approach the most relevant issues of the contemporary city, as well as the opportunity to debate about the pedagogical strategies under which future architects are being trained. The aim of this academic experience is to shift the focus of design exercises, from the development of architectural objects to a more profound understanding of the urban realm as the main field of action of every architectural intervention, in order to make students more aware about the city and Urban Design.
Urban form at the fringe of Metropolitan Santiago. A result of a normative or profitability plan?.
Abstract: Metropolitan Santiago is one of the many Latin American cities which has been developed according to a spread model of urbanisation. This pattern has caused at least two types of consequences: economic and physical ones. The former is shown in the speculation of land value at the rural fringe of the metropolitan area which has low prices, these have suddenly increased after the normative changes in the land use, from rural to urban. The later shows location of massive low-income housing and commercial malls regardless connection to the urban fabric and spatial shaping of the existing city. This results in a chaotic urban form resembling a "patchwork".This paper reviews the scope of a Chilean policy instrument called "Plan Regulador" used to control physical urban growth, particularly sprawled on the fringe of the city. It is believed that as a consequence of this Plan, normative procedures are not good enough for achieving its objectives. Conversely, urban form appears to be a result of a profitability plan made by private developers.
Negative specific heat in a Lennard-Jones-like gas with long-range interactions
Ernesto P. Borges,Constantino Tsallis
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1016/S0378-4371(01)00654-9
Abstract: We study, through molecular dynamics, a conservative two-dimensional Lennard-Jones-like gas (with attractive potential $\propto r^{-\alpha}$). We consider the effect of the range index $\alpha$ of interactions, number of particles, total energy and particle density. We detect negative specific heat when the interactions become long-ranged ($0\le \alpha/d<1$).
Mixing and equilibration: Protagonists in the scene of nonextensive statistical mechanics
Constantino Tsallis,Ernesto P. Borges,Fulvio Baldovin
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1016/S0378-4371(01)00633-1
Abstract: After a brief review of the present status of nonextensive statistical mechanics, we present a conjectural scenario where mixing (characterized by the entropic index $q_{mix} \le 1$) and equilibration (characterized by the entropic index $q_{eq} \ge 1$) play central and inter-related roles, and appear to determine {\it a priori} the values of the relevant indices of the formalism. Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics is recovered as the $q_{mix}=q_{eq}=1$ particular case.
Are citations of scientific papers a case of nonextensivity ?
Constantino Tsallis,Marcio P. de Albuquerque
Physics , 1999, DOI: 10.1007/s100510050097
Abstract: The distribution $N(x)$ of citations of scientific papers has recently been illustrated (on ISI and PRE data sets) and analyzed by Redner [Eur. Phys. J. B {\bf 4}, 131 (1998)]. To fit the data, a stretched exponential ($N(x) \propto \exp{-(x/x_0)^{\beta}}$) has been used with only partial success. The success is not complete because the data exhibit, for large citation count $x$, a power law (roughly $N(x) \propto x^{-3}$ for the ISI data), which, clearly, the stretched exponential does not reproduce. This fact is then attributed to a possibly different nature of rarely cited and largely cited papers. We show here that, within a nonextensive thermostatistical formalism, the same data can be quite satisfactorily fitted with a single curve (namely, $N(x) \propto 1/[1+(q-1) \lambda x]^{q/{q-1}}$ for the available values of $x$. This is consistent with the connection recently established by Denisov [Phys. Lett. A {\bf 235}, 447 (1997)] between this nonextensive formalism and the Zipf-Mandelbrot law. What the present analysis ultimately suggests is that, in contrast to Redner's conclusion, the phenomenon might essentially be one and the same along the entire range of the citation number $x$.
Educational Technology and Teacher Education: Barriers and Gates in South America  [PDF]
Gustavo Daniel Constantino
Creative Education (CE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2014.512122
Abstract:

Historically, Educational Technology (EdTech) and Teacher Education (TE) have shared a conflicted relationship, particularly where practicing teachers have not been trained in ET in a manner so that they are able to coherently and efficiently incorporate the new educational technology into their classrooms and schools. In Latin America’s diverse scenario, our analysis is focused on a scenario consisting of Argentina and Uruguay. In this scenario, we identify the social and cultural context where teacher education and teaching practice take place, the EdTech-related programs with the greatest impact, and the “barriers” hindering access to and the application of EdTech, as well as the “bridges” or “gates” that facilitate their effective incorporation to teaching and learning both at schools and in teacher education. Lastly, we propose some courses of action to reduce these barriers and widen the gates connecting EdTech and school settings.

Multiscale Autoregressive Identification of Neuroelectrophysiological Systems

Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/580795
Abstract: Electrical signals between connected neural nuclei are difficult to model because of the complexity and high number of paths within the brain. Simple parametric models are therefore often used. A multiscale version of the autoregressive with exogenous input (MS-ARX) model has recently been developed which allows selection of the optimal amount of filtering and decimation depending on the signal-to-noise ratio and degree of predictability. In this paper, we apply the MS-ARX model to cortical electroencephalograms and subthalamic local field potentials simultaneously recorded from anesthetized rodent brains. We demonstrate that the MS-ARX model produces better predictions than traditional ARX modeling. We also adapt the MS-ARX results to show differences in internuclei predictability between normal rats and rats with 6OHDA-induced parkinsonism, indicating that this method may have broad applicability to other neuroelectrophysiological studies.
