Abstract: Introduction: Hospital Recreation (HR) aims to reduce disasters caused by hospital admission. Objectives: To expose the behavior of children in cancer treatment (CA) during HR, and to verify which recreational activities generate the most adherence. Methods: The research is an experimental clinical trial of a non-probabilistic and intentional sample, with a quantitative and qualitative approach. Participants were 43 children (both sexes), with CA, admitted to the Pediatric Hospital Oncology CenterPHOC. The mean age of the children in fact was 7.5 years, and the data of mean and standard deviation between parenthood confer with the data of the results found during the research. The study lasted 12 weeks, with 38 sessions lasting 3 hours. Using games of activity: cognitive, manipulative, perceptive, creative and cooperative. Inclusion criteria: 1) being hospitalized in the PHOC, of the city of Natal; 2) being released by the medical team to participate in the activities. Children who were on special care in the ICU were excluded from the study. The behavior of the children was evaluated by the observation matrix proposed by Urie Bonfenbrenner, approached by Krebs and Koller. At

Abstract: introduction: in brazil, deaths by external causes rank first in the mortality statistics. nevertheless, studies which investigate the relationship between mortality by external causes and race/skin color are scarce. objectives: to evaluate the relative contribution of race/skin color to the spatial distribution of mortality by homicide in salvador, state of bahia, brazil, in the period 1998 - 2003. material and methods: this is a spatial aggregate study including secondary data on 5,250 subjects, using a unit of analysis called the "weighting area" (wa). annual average death rates by homicide were estimated. the global and local moran index were used to evaluate the presence of spatial autocorrelation and the conditional auto regressive (car) model was employed to evaluate the referred effect, using the r statistical package. results: global and local moran's i tests were significant. car regression showed that the predicted mortality rate increases when there is a growth in the proportion of black males aged between 15 and 49 years. geometrically weighted regression (gwr) showed a very small variation of the local coefficients for all predictors. conclusion: we demonstrated that the interrelation between race, violence and space is a phenomenon which results from a long process of social inequality. understanding these interactions requires interdisciplinary efforts that contribute to advancement of knowledge that leads to more specific public health interventions.

Abstract: the incidence of deep venous thrombosis (dvt) in children (0-18 years old) is low. the aim of this study was to investigate the case of a 12 year-old child that had dvt after a trauma. protein c and protein s activities, antithrombin and resistance to activated protein c were analyzed in coagulometer. factor v leiden (fvl) was studied. the patient and his father were heterozygotes for fvl. his mother was normal homozygote. we concluded that the presence of fvl associated with other medical conditions tends to multiply the occurrence of thrombosis, which is a multifactorial disease.

Abstract: epidemiology's conceptual and methodological shortcomings have placed constraints on the study of health phenomena related to human communities, thus posing a challenge to the field. this paper presents some basic principles resulting from the observation of the field of geography in defining its object - space - and the application of this object to medicine and epidemiology. such principles state the pertinence of a conceptual and methodological strategy focusing on an approach to geographic space as expressing the population's living conditions. application of this concept to epidemiological studies is still limited, although such proposals have already been developed in other areas of knowledge. ecological studies, whose unit of analysis is the group, and the ecological model, based on the idea of an inter-relationship of factors, if improved, could become a promising alternative in this direction. the authors emphasize that researchers should have wholeness as their scientific reference in order to guarantee the non-separation of the complex interactive processes determining health phenomena in the population.

Abstract: from concerns about students with visual impairments in regular classrooms for physics, arose the necessity to question future teachers about this subject in a course: "teaching physics and social inclusion", taught in the 2009 second semester, for undergraduate students in physics. the objective was to perceive the trends suggested by the future teachers, from their own reflections on the debates which emerged in class, about inclusion of visually impaired students. information was collected from written material among three students who had already completed the course: a questionnaire answered in the first class, a kind of log-book of the class, students' final projects and their course evaluations. data analysis was based on the bakhtinian analysis of discourse. we noted that the students evolve in their ideas about inclusion, being more sensitive towards the subject, developing more suitable solutions for those with visual disabilities and that they intend to be more inclusive professionals.

Abstract: Introduction: The dialysis causes the loss of the nutrients and the elevation of catabolism, thus, patients in dialysis have at high risk for the loss of body reserves of protein and energy. Objective: To identify nursing diagnoses of nutrition domain of NANDA International in hemodialysis patients and to correlate them to the socioeconomic and clinical data. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Performed in a large university hospital in northeastern Brazil. Participants: The first stage was carried out with 50 patients, selected with the following inclusion criteria: Being hospitalized and undergoing hemodialysis in that hospital; aged 18 years old or over; being conscious and oriented. Exclusion criteria were patients undergoing hemodialysis in that hospital with external service, pregnant women and patients being treated by plasmapheresis. In the second stage, participants were three nursing specialists in nephrology and nursing diagnoses. Methods: The defining characteristics of the nursing diagnoses inserted in the nutrition domain were observed in patients and then these data were judged by nurses, in order to identify diagnoses present in each patient. The Chi-square, Fisher’s exact and Mann-Whitney tests were used in the analysis of the relationship of socioeconomic and clinical data, with an adopted p value of <0.05. Results: The study identified six diagnoses of nutrition domain with prevalence ≥50% in patients. Among these, the diagnosis: Risk for impaired liver function, imbalanced nutrition: More than body requirements, risk for deficient fluid volume, readiness for enhanced fluid volume were significantly associated with gender (p = 0.001), origin (p = 0.014), religion (p = 0.046) and income (p = 0.039), respectively. Conclusion: The variables that showed significant association were risk of impaired liver function and gender; imbalanced nutrition: More than body requirements and origin requirements; risk for deficient fluid volume and religion; and deficient fluid volume and income.

Abstract: dengue epidemics account annually for several million cases and deaths worldwide. the high endemic level of dengue fever and its hemorrhagic form correlates to extensive domiciliary infestation by aedes aegypti and multiple viral serotype human infection. this study analyzed serial case reports registered in brazil since 1981, describing incidence evolutionary patterns and spatial distribution. epidemic waves followed the introduction of every serotype (den 1 to 3), and reduction in susceptible individuals possibly accounted for decreasing case frequency. an incremental expansion of affected areas and increasing occurrence of dengue fever and its hemorrhagic form with high case fatality were noted in recent years. in contrast, efforts based solely on chemical vector control have been insufficient. moreover, some evidence demonstrates that educational measures do not permanently modify population habits. thus, as long as a vaccine is not available, further dengue control depends on potential results from basic interdisciplinary research and intervention evaluation studies, integrating environmental changes, community participation and education, epidemiological and virological surveillance, and strategic technological innovations aimed to stop transmission.
