Implications of ischemic penumbra for the diagnosis of brain death
Coimbra, C.G.;
Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-879X1999001200005
Abstract: the data reviewed here suggest the possibility that a global reduction of blood supply to the whole brain or solely to the infratentorial structures down to the range of ischemic penumbra for several hours or a few days may lead to misdiagnosis of irreversible brain or brain stem damage in a subset of deeply comatose patients with cephalic areflexia. the following proposals are advanced: 1) the lack of any set of clinically detectable brain functions does not provide a safe diagnosis of brain or brain stem death; 2) apnea testing may induce irreversible brain damage and should be abandoned; 3) moderate hypothermia, antipyresis, prevention of arterial hypotension, and occasionally intra-arterial thrombolysis may contribute to good recovery of a possibly large subset of cases of brain injury currently regarded as irreversible; 4) confirmatory tests for brain death should not replace or delay the administration of potentially effective therapeutic measures; 5) in order to validate confirmatory tests, further research is needed to relate their results to specific levels of blood supply to the brain. the current criteria for the diagnosis of brain death should be revised.
Coimbra, Cecília Maria;
Psicologia & Sociedade , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822004000100007
Abstract: resisting, denouncing, tiring, sometimes becoming indignant, most of the time we are living the final moments of brazilian public universities, specially in the area known as social and human sciences. in the neoliberal ideal of minimum state, the resources and financings that have been allocated in public college-education in our country are, each year, more insignificant. it interests that, in a same public university, the several centers, institutes and departments ferociously struggle among themselves for the amount of money repassed in crumbs and coming as almses. the teams, the professors, the students compete against each other for the rare financings. these are the comments i bring in this text as introductory notes on the issue of brazilian universities today, specially concerned with devastation that, the so called "humanity" area has been suffering in post-graduation courses.

Surgical & Cosmetic Dermatology , 2010,

Synthesis, Cytotoxicity and Antileishmanial Activity of Aza-stilbene derivatives
Elaine S. Coimbra
Mediterranean Journal of Chemistry , 2013,
Abstract: Stilbenes are compounds found in numerous medicinal plants and food products with some known biological and even antileishmanial activity. This paper describes the preparation of Aza-stilbene derivatives and their in vitro biological activities against Leishmania species. Most of the compounds with hydroxyl groups (2a,2b, 2d, 2e and 2f) showed interesting results against three Leishmania species tested. Compound 2f showed the best activity against intracellular forms of L. amazonensis, with IC50 of 7.48 μM, very similar when compared to reference drug Miltefosine. It not possible associate NO production with leishmanicidal activity for all azastilbene derivatives. It is noteworthy that none of compounds tested showed cytotoxicity against macrophages
Algumas considera es sobre o parecer psicológico na justi a da infancia e da juventude Some thoughts on psychological assessment in infancy and youth justice
This article is a study about the psychological written report in the Juvenile Court, based on the concepts of discipline, norm and exam as they were worked out by Michel Foucault. This research is also based on interviews with judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys and psychologists who work in this area. An analysis about some psychological written reports is also made. In the end, we cannot only criticize such reports, but work out the concepts of their (re)definition as well.
