Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-86702010000500006
Abstract: background and objectives: evidence suggests that sustained virologic response to interferon treatment decreases incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with hepatitis c virus cirrhosis. this study was designed to compare the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma among cirrhotic patients exposed to interferon based treatment with or without achieving a sustained virological response, in order to evaluate the role of interferon itself in the prevention hepatocellular carcinoma. methods: a cohort of 85 patients with compensated hepatitis c cirrhosis was followed after treatment with interferon and ribavirin. sustained virological response was defined as negative polymerase chain reaction assay 24 weeks after the end of treatment. patients were followed every 6 months with ultrasound and alpha-fetoprotein. hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed by the finding of a focal liver lesion greater than 2 cm with arterial hypervascularization on two imaging techniques and/or by liver biopsy. results: the mean follow-up time was 32.1 ± 20 months for patients who achieved a sustained virological response and 28.2 ± 18 months among 47 patients (55%) without svr. hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed in 1 (3%) vs. 8 (17%) responders and non responders respectively (p = 0.02). conclusion: patients with cirrhosis due to hepatitis c virus who achieved sustained virological response had significantly lower incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma when compared to those without treatment response. interferon treatment without achieving sustained virological response does not seem to protect against hepatocellular carcinoma
Effect of HFE gene polymorphism on sustained virological response in patients with chronic hepatitis C and elevated serum ferritin

Arquivos de Gastroenterologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-28032012000100003
Abstract: context: abnormal serum ferritin levels are found in approximately 20%-30% of the patients with chronic hepatitis c and are associated with a lower response rate to interferon therapy. objective: to determine if the presence of hfe gene mutations had any effect on the sustained virological response rate to interferon based therapy in chronic hepatitis c patients with elevated serum ferritin. methods: a total of 44 treatment na?ve patients with histologically demonstrated chronic hepatitis c, all infected with hepatitis c virus genotype non-1 (38 genotype 3; 6 genotype 2) and serum ferritin above 500 ng/ml were treated with interferon (3 mu, 3 times a week) and ribavirin (1.000 mg, daily) for 24 weeks. results: sustained virological response was defined as negative qualitative hcv-rna more than 24 weeks after the end of treatment. serum hcv-rna was measured by qualitative in house polymerase chain reaction with a limit of detection of 200 iu/ml. hfe gene mutation was detected using restriction-enzyme digestion with rsai (c282y mutation analysis) and bcli (h63d mutation analysis) in 16 (37%) patients, all heterozygous (11 h63d, 2 c282y and 3 both). sustained virological response was achieved in 0 of 16 patients with hfe gene mutations and 11 (41%) of 27 patients without hfe gene mutations (p = 0.002; exact fisher test). conclusion: heterozigozity for h63d and/or c282y hfe gene mutation predicts absence of sustained virological response to combination treatment with interferon and ribavirin in patients with chronic hepatitis c, non-1 genotype and serum ferritin levels above 500 ng/ml.
Efeitos de variáveis individuais e contextuais sobre desempenho individual no trabalho
Coelho Junior, Francisco Antonio;Borges-Andrade, Jairo Eduardo;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2011000200001
Abstract: this paper aims to empirically test a theoretical multilevel model for the prediction of individual performance at work. antecedent variables, isolated or in interaction, were age, gender, function, scholarity, period of function and perception of learning support, in the individual and contextual levels, and satisfaction at work, an individual variable. this study was accomplished in a public corporation which deals with agricultural research in a national scope. the participants (n = 808) were distribute in 45 central and noncentral units for the brazil. data collection was done online, by e-mail. the multilevel results confirm the hypothetic theoretical model and make evident that the performance's variance were predicted by different individuals and context variables, isolated or in interaction.
Zoogeografia marinha do Brasil: I. Considera??es gerais sobre o método e aplica??o a um grupo de crustáceos (Paguros: Crustácea Decápoda, super-famílias Paguroidea e Coenobitoidea)

Abstract: the present paper is the first of a series dealing with marine zoogeography of brazil. the brazilian marine fauna has been well worked only recently, and the contributions on the zoogeography of various groups are in dependence of conclusions of faunistic surveys. since dana (1852) to present, various authors have divided diversely the littoral in natural regions, according temperature, salinity and species ranges. in the present paper the littoral between french guiana and north argentina was divided in 26 strips 2o wide, each strip extending from the coast to the 200 m isobath. the temperature and salinity data (surface and bottom) collected in each strip by oceanographie ship "almirante saldanha" were gathered in order to calculate the mean temperature of extreme months and the corresponding salinities (other data were also used, when necessary). the species list of each strip was made with the previously published records and the data of research institution files. the distributional data for the hermit crab were analysed in three ways: horizontal distribution; bathymetric range and substrate preferences. it was possible to divide the study area in five provinces (guyanian, brazilian, st. paul's, uruguayan and argentinian); the st. paul's province is a transition zone between tropical and anti-boreal regions.

Rotulagem de suplementos vitamínicos e minerais: uma revis?o das normas federais
Carvalho,Patrícia Borges de; Araújo,Wilma Maria Coelho;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232008000700028
Abstract: in brazil, there is a steadily increasing offer and demand for products on the basis of vitamins and minerals. according to brazilian law, the differences in the dosages offered to the consumer in each product are the parameter for its classification as alimentary supplement or medicament. the limit between these two concepts, however, is confusing and lacks clearness. considering the risk posed by imprudent consumption of such products and seeking to facilitate the interpretation and consolidation of the norms dealing with vitamin and mineral products as well as to create the basis for a master's degree dissertation, a bibliographical survey and evaluation of the entire juridical basis regarding the labeling of these products was conducted. it was concluded that the normative regulations are extensive, complex and of difficult understanding, with a great number of norms dealing with the same subject issued by different authorities. these norms are not consolidated leading to difficult interpretation by retailers, health professionals and consumers and even to failures in the application of these norms by the control authorities. suggestions are made for helping to correct the failures identified in the study.

Abstract: investing on intellectual capital became the guiding pillar for personnel management actions. the organizational behavior literature highlights the effect of contextual variables on the performance of individuals. the impact of these variables, which belong to different levels of analysis, needs a better comprehension. this paper discusses the potential multilevel modeling contributions for investigating predictors of that performance. in addition, it also discusses the application of this modeling for understanding usually studied organizational behavior. these contributions may favor structuring predictive models which may better grasp the meaning of the inclusion of diverse and complex levels of variables from the labor context.
On the Popularity of GitHub Applications: A Preliminary Note
Hudson Borges,Marco Tulio Valente,Andre Hora,Jailton Coelho
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: GitHub is the world's largest collection of open source software. Therefore, it is important both to software developers and users to compare and track the popularity of GitHub repositories. In this paper, we propose a framework to assess the popularity of GitHub software, using their number of stars. We also propose a set of popularity growth patterns, which describe the evolution of the number of stars of a system over time. We show that stars tend to correlate with other measures, like forks, and with the effective usage of GitHub software by third-party programs. Throughout the paper we illustrate the application of our framework using real data extracted from GitHub.
