Abstract: In this paper the authors present and discuss results obtained from on the conformation of a practice of virtual laboratory attended with Matlab, for the design of a multivariavels controller for a distillation column. It' carries out a study of the decoupling method to be implemented, which is based on the use of the transfer functions matrix of the researched process. The innovative aspect of the employed methodology lies in the use of the experimental model of a real distillation column in order to implement, through simulation, techniques of classical decoupling with the correspondent performance evaluation. The final results are shown through the obtained time responses using Matlab.

Abstract: supranumerary or ectopic parathyroid glands are the main cause of persistent hyperparathyroidism (hpt) in patients with end stage renal disease (esrd) submitted to parathyroidectomy (ptx). purpose: to evaluate the prevalence and location of parathyroid glands in these patients. methods: thirty-five patients with esrd and severe secondary hyperparathyroidism (hpt2) had been submitted to total ptx at hucff from december 2001 to july 2005. surgery was always performed by the same surgeon, who described in details the location of the glands. results: sixteen patients (45.7%) had ectopic glands, which were also extranumerary in five of them (14.3%). the most common locations were the thyroid parenchyma (33.3%), thyroid-thymus conduit (18.5%), and thymus (14.8%). before ptx, the sensibility of ultrasonography and scintigraphy with technetium-99m sestamibi was low (48.3% and 35.3%, respectively). moreover, 51.4% of the nodules found at us were thyroid nodules. however, 99mtc-sestamibi was useful to identify ectopic glands in those two patients with persistent hpt after ptx. conclusion: the presence of extranumerary and ectopic parathyroid glands in hpt2 is sufficiently important to justify their exhaustive search. as the preoperative image exams present low sensibility to locate them, it is necessary to develop an exploratory routine embracing the most common sites of location.

Abstract: One experimental model of diabetes mellitus (DM) similar to type II DM, called n5-STZ, is obtained by a single injection (via i.p.) of streptozotocin (STZ) in the 5th day of life of newborn rats. The present investigation aimed to characterize alterations in excitability of rat peripheral neurons in n5-STZ model. n5-STZ DM was induced, and electrophysiological evaluation was done at 12th week of rat life. Rats developed glucose intolerance, sensory alteration, and hyperglycemia or near-normoglycemia ( and ?mmol/L). In near-normoglycemia group the significant electrophysiological alteration observed was decreased in amplitude of 2nd wave (2nd component, conduction velocity: 48.8?m/s) of compound action potential (CAP) of sciatic nerve. For hyperglycemic rats, decreased excitability, amplitude, and conduction velocity of 2nd CAP component of sciatic nerve were found; a depolarization of resting potential (4-5?mV) and reduction in maximum ascendant and descendant inclinations of action potential were found in DRG neurons but no alteration on Na+ current ( ). Thus, n5-STZ rats develop alterations in excitability which were related to glycemic levels but were not likely attributable to changes on . Our data confirm that n5-STZ model is a useful model to study type II DM. 1. Introduction Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder with great worldwide prevalence in adult and elderly population [1]. This disease is characterized mainly by hyperglycemia and insufficient insulin secretion or resistance to insulin by tissues. It is generally classified as type I diabetes, in which there is absolute lack of insulin caused by pancreatic beta cell destruction and type II diabetes, in which there is insufficient insulin secretion or insulin resistance in peripheral tissues [2]. Several complications are associated with DM including retinopathy, nephropathy, and peripheral neuropathy [3]. Neuropathy is the most frequent complication, reaching an incidence up to 50% in cases of long-lasting DM evolutions [4]. Due to the large incidence and debilitating characteristics of DM, animal models have been developed to simulate the symptoms of human diabetes [5]. One of these models is the streptozotocin (STZ-) induced DM, which has been widely used to study diabetic complications. This model presents features that resemble human disease and can be used to induce both type I and type II DM [6, 7]. To induce type I DM, generally adult rats (rat adult model of DM) and doses of STZ, which in one week induce DM with plasma glucose levels >15?mmol/L, have been used [7–9]. In

The sugar apple (Annona squamosa L.) is native to tropical America, occurring spontaneously in Northeastern Brazil, where it is exploited mainly as subsistence without adequate management and without genetic material selection. An experiment was developed aiming to evaluate yield, physical and chemical characteristics of the fruits of ten sugar apple genotypes in Bom Jesus, Piauí State, Brazil. A completely randomized design with treatments represented by ten genotypes and three replications was adopted. The following variables were evaluated: vitamin C, titratable acidity, soluble solids, SS/TA ratio, longitudinal diameter and transverse, LD/TD, number of seeds per fruit, fruit weight and fruit production per plant. The genotypes were grouped into seven groups, with emphasis on the group III (Gen-02) and group IV (Gen-05), what explicited the differences among sugar apple genotypes studied in relation to the chemical, physical and fruit production. Genotypes GEN-01 and GEN-02 present potential for installation in commercial crops, due to its fruit production, even as natural sources of vitamin C.

Abstract: a systematic review was carried out of national and international literature on the available knowledge regarding nutritional assessment methods for anthropometric evaluation during pregnancy and its association with obstetric outcomes among brazilian women was confirmed. tracking resulted in 26 studies, where the most commonly used weight-gain assessment method was that proposed by rosso (1985). some of these used only pregestational nutritional status institute of medicine (1990) or weight gain during pregnancy assessments of world health organization (1995). the results indicate the lack of appropriate methods for assessing nutrition during pregnancy, which reflects the low importance prenatal services give to the standardization of anthropomorphic evaluation during pregnancy. there is an urgent need for well-defined methodological studies involving pregnant women that address age differences and intervening factors. most researchers consider birth weight to be the main outcome of nutritional assessment during gestation to validate anthropometric methods. outcomes encountered in this study demonstrate a lack of information, both quantitative and qualitative, to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional assessment methods among pregnant brazilian women. the development of studies using a rigorous methodology in this field is essential and these should address differences in terms of age and biological, socioeconomic and environmental factors.

Abstract:

Available information of the effects of manganese nutrition on the forage genus Urochloa is scarce. In the context, this study aims to evaluate the tolerance of Urochloa brizantha cv. MG5 to Mn toxicity. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the University of the State of Sao Paulo (UNESP) in the city of Jaboticabal, SP. Plants were cultivated in vases (3.5 L) filled with soil according to a completely randomized experimental design comprising of five levels of Mn (0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 mg?dm?3) and four replications and cut in two periods: one is 42 days after sowing and the other is 30 days after the first one. Samples from both cuts were evaluated as to plant height, number of leaves and tillers, dry weight, Mn content and accumulation, and the green index was determined in the last cut. Manganese addition to soil caused an increase in chlorophyll content at the dosage of 68 mg?dm?3 observed in the second plant cut. Dosages of Mn above 15 mg?dm?3 did not induce increases in nutrient accumulation and in the number of leaves in the first and second cuts of the grass, and tillers in the first cut. The highest concentrations of manganese in the shoots did not produce visual symptoms of damage or a decrease in forage productivity demonstrating that Urochloa brizantha cv. MG5 has high tolerance to manganese toxicity.

The availability of credit for an industry is directly affected directly by the insolvency index; knowing its causes helps to prevent its incidence. The objective of the paper consisted in identifying common factors that had generated the forced agreement of three companies from the Brazilian copper wires and cables industry in 2002. Identifying these causes is useful, to the measure that it serves as a learning tool for new credit ratings and for the company’s financial management. The specific objectives were to identify the causes of the insolvency of the three companies involved, to verify the contributions of the traditional and dynamic analyses of the financial statements for this identification and to elaborate a synthesis table on the coincident causes. The analyses make it possible to identify the companies’ financing and applications resources structures, as well as their operational performances in the previous five years before the forced agreement order. The ratios groups found disclosed high indebtedness, unpredictable liquidity and activity ratios, low return on capital and absence of working capital sufficient enough to keep up the companies’ operational activity. The common determinative factors of the forced ag

Abstract: this article aims at describing our experience in obtaining statements using the phenomenological interview. eleven prostitutes were interviewed in teresina, pi. along this journey we have had several remarkable moments such as: the strategy of approaching the interviewee, the site of the interviews and the own emotional narration of the prostitutes. this process has showed us that one needs to be familiar and empathic with the research subjects. we have also learned that there is not a specific formula of conducting the interview, but it is the role of the researcher to identify the difficulties and propose strategies to obtain the statements. thus, the empathic relationship that we have experienced in obtaining the statements from these women through the phenomenological interview was essential to understand the contact with violence throughout the prostitution daily life.
