MedUNAB , 2005,
Abstract: With 10 million new cases and three million deaths a year, the tuberculosis (TB) is one of the illnesses infectocontagiosasmore important of the world, preceded only by the malaria andthe VIH-SIDA, for what it is supported as one of the illnessestransmissible of big worry and occupation for the systemsof health. But not always it was like that, a moment came in the historyof this illness that one believed inclusive in his eradication, withoutit impeded the appearance of new,and the conjunction of old factorsthey have helped to reposicionar to the TB as a problem of attentionimmediate for the public global health. In this work we developa brief review of four factors that are impactandodeeply in the present and future of the TB: 1) The poverty; 2)The resistance to drugs, 3) The systems of diagnosis, and 4) youraffiliation with the virus of the inmunodefi human science. So much froma global perspective as national, and we conclude with the brief one evaluation on as we are preparing ourselves to face tothe tuberculosis

Abstract: The brucellae are α-Proteobacteria facultative intracellular parasites that cause an important zoonosis. These bacteria escape early detection by innate immunity, an ability associated to the absence of marked pathogen-associated molecular patterns in the cell envelope lipopolysaccharide, lipoproteins and flagellin. We show here that, in contrast to the outer membrane ornithine lipids (OL) of other Gram negative bacteria, Brucella abortus OL lack a marked pathogen-associated molecular pattern activity. We identified two OL genes (olsB and olsA) and by generating the corresponding mutants found that olsB deficient B. abortus did not synthesize OL or their lyso-OL precursors. Liposomes constructed with B. abortus OL did not trigger IL-6 or TNF-α release by macrophages whereas those constructed with Bordetella pertussis OL and the olsB mutant lipids as carriers were highly active. The OL deficiency in the olsB mutant did not promote proinflammatory responses or generated attenuation in mice. In addition, OL deficiency did not increase sensitivity to polymyxins, normal serum or complement consumption, or alter the permeability to antibiotics and dyes. Taken together, these observations indicate that OL have become dispensable in the extant brucellae and are consistent within the trend observed in α-Proteobacteria animal pathogens to reduce and eventually eliminate the envelope components susceptible of recognition by innate immunity.
MICRODISCOIDECTOMíA, VENTAJAS ECONóMICAS

Archivos de neurociencias (México, D.F.) , 2004,
Abstract: objective: to show the economical advantages of microdiscectomy vs conventional standard discectomy clinical materials and methods; from april 2001 to august 2002, 6 patients underwent microdiscectomy and 12 patients standard discectomy. results: 18 patients were included as a total in the present paper, there was a male predominance, the patients that underwent microdiscectomy were younger than the standard procedure. there was a reasonable economical saving in the total cost for the microsurgery group, including direct medical costs and indirect costs. conclusions: this paper clearly shows that the microsurgery discectomy offers a reasonable economical saving not only for the patient but, for hospitals too. it requires less surgical materials, shorter hospital stay and a hortened interval before return to previous activity.

A dichotomous key is provided for determining the different species of butterflies of the genus Morpho from Colombia, with ilustrations of the male genitalia and dorsal and ventral pictures of representative males and females of the main subgenera. For the study of the taxonomic characteristics of the species, the parameters given by Clarke (1941) were followed with some modifications that simplified the use of this technique. Wing morphometrics and coloration patterns and mal e genitalia features were also included, in some cases, references of the literature were given (Le Moult & Real, 1962; Blandin, 1984).
