Pharmaceutics , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/pharmaceutics5010115
Abstract: The analysis of nanomaterials in pharmaceutical or cosmetic preparations is an important aspect both in formulation development and quality control of marketed products. Despite the increased popularity of nanoparticulate compounds especially in dermal preparations such as emulsions, methods and protocols of analysis for the characterization of such systems are scarce. This work combines an original sample preparation procedure along with different methods of analytical electron microscopy for the comprehensive analysis of fluid or semi-solid dermal preparations containing nanoparticulate material. Energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and high resolution imaging were performed on model emulsions and a marketed product to reveal different structural aspects of both the emulsion bulk phase and incorporated nanosized material. An innovative analytical approach for the determination of the physical stability of the emulsion under investigation is presented. Advantages and limitations of the employed analytical imaging techniques are highlighted.

Generation in Norwegen. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0802140 The social integration of first generation immigrants in Norway is the main topic of this paper. If certain conditions are fulfilled, a workplace may be a key arena for identity reproduction and social integration. For some, they are a means of finding new acquaintances and having their identity affirmed. For others, they will seem closed off, and even appear as sources of social exclusion and discrediting. If we look beyond the general reasons for the absence of social relations between immigrants and hosts we may find some further explanations in the nature of the work immigrants tend to have. In this article, I focus at three mechanisms that influence their integration and identity reproduction at the workplace: a) The meanings immigrants attached to contact structures at the workplace, b) the degree of occupational displacement that immigrants experience and c) the occupational status and the status position within the workplace. Given the focus on immigrants' voices, the data is mainly gathered through qualitative interviews with them.
Refugees' Social Trajectories and Trajectories of the Self Las trayectorias sociales de refugiados y las trayectorias de identidad Flüchtlingsleben: soziale und pers nliche Verlaufskurven

Abstract: The focus of this article is on refugee's social integration in the receiving country. It examines how refugee ethno-social preferences and practices fluctuate and develop. The primary goal is to explore how post-resettlement social trajectories are linked to changes in identities. It is argued here that ethno-social practices and identities of refugees need to be seen in the light of their migration biographies, everyday experiences, and anticipated futures. The findings in the article have important methodological implications in terms of the methodological potential offered by biographical narratives as a tool in gathering qualitative data. In demonstrating the advantages and weaknesses of biographical narratives, the article is of relevance not only to researchers, but also to social workers and other service providers who work in the field of social integration and who can use this approach to map out the social life of each refugee.

Abstract: Mild non-ionic sucrose ester surfactants can be employed to produce lipid-based drug delivery systems for dermal application. Moreover, sucrose esters of intermediate lipophilicity such as sucrose stearate S-970 possess a peculiar rheological behavior which can be employed to create highly viscous semi-solid formulations without any further additives. Interestingly, it was possible to develop both viscous macroemulsions and fluid nanoemulsions with the same chemical composition merely by slight alteration of the production process. Optical light microscopy and cryo transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the sucrose ester led to the formation of an astonishing hydrophilic network at a concentration of only 5% w/w in the macroemulsion system. A small number of more finely structured aggregates composed of surplus surfactant were likewise detected in the nanoemulsions. These discoveries offer interesting possibilities to adapt the low viscosity of fluid O/W nanoemulsions for a more convenient application. Moreover, a simple and rapid production method for skin-friendly creamy O/W emulsions with excellent visual long-term stability is presented. It could be shown by franz-cell diffusion studies and in vitro tape stripping that the microviscosity within the semi-solid formulations was apparently not influenced by their increased macroviscosity: the release of three model drugs was not impaired by the complex network-like internal structure of the macroemulsions. These results indicate that the developed semi-solid emulsions with advantageous application properties are highly suitable for the unhindered delivery of lipophilic drugs despite their comparatively large particle size and high viscosity.
Two-step homogenization of asphalt mixtures
Richard Valenta,Michal ?ejnoha
Bulletin of Applied Mechanics , 2008,
Abstract: A novel approach to the prediction of nonlinear macroscopic response of asphalt mixtures is presented. It combines well established first order homogenization method and a concept of so called statistically equivalent periodic unit cell. Such a unit cell allows us to take into account a real microstructure of asphalt mixture when searching for the estimates of nonlinear macroscopic response. To that end the Fast Fourier Transform methods is examined. To enhance feasibility of the solution of the underlying nonlinear problem a two-step homogenization procedure is proposed. Several numerical examples are presented to show applicability of the proposed approach.

Abstract: The quality of research infrastructure in Czechia has been so far evaluated as lagging still considerably behind more developed western economies. At the same time, it is generally agreed that the availability of front-end research infrastructure plays important role not only for the quality of the research activities, but also for international cooperation and collaboration with the industry. The existing deficit of the research infrastructure in Czechia is addressed by the current European operational programmes supporting establishment of new (large) research centres. The real impact of these new research infrastructures being built, however, depends highly not on the physical infrastructure itself, but also on its utilization, being dependent on the ability to attract excellent research teams and researchers into these centres. This paper therefore assesses the availability of existing human resources in research and development and compares them with the indicated requirements of the emerging centres in order to evaluate potential risks and challenges stemming from these projects. The analysis shows that in some of the research fields the future demand for new employees might exceed the contemporary trends of human resources in research and development, jeopardizing the existing or the emerging research centres, and thus expected impacts of the new research infrastructure.

Automated DC Substation Short-Current Evaluation

Advances in Electrical and Electronic Engineering , 2004,
Abstract: Technical praxis has no easy-to-use standardized method for a DC short-current evaluation. For a correct rating of rectifying blocks (diodes) and input and output current-carrying cables is need to know short-current parameters. The current flow in the substation is derived by commutation of rectifying blocks, which define current of transformers and DC part. For evaluating exists a semi empiric formula, that has a delimited relevance to small power range up to 50 kWatts of output power. New way of evaluation of short current is based on simulation of simplified substation model using the capabilities of DYNAST simulation program, or other dynamic equation solver based on numerical method, like Matlab.
