Environmental factors and entrepreneurial activity in Latin America
Neurospora crassa is a widely studied model of circadian rhythmicity. In this fungus, metabolism is controlled by multiple factors which include development, medium characteristics and the circadian clock. The study of the circadian control of metabolism in this fungus could be masked by the use of restrictive media that inhibit growth and development. In this report, the presence of a circadian rhythm in the activity of the enzyme Succinate Dehydrogenase in Neurospora crassa is demonstrated. Rhythmic and arrhythmic Neurospora strains were grown in complete medium without conidiation restriction. A circadian change in the enzymatic activity was found with high values in hours corresponding to the night and a low level during the day. This finding highlights the importance of deeper studies in the circadian control of metabolism in this fungus, given the existence of multiple pathways of regulation of metabolic enzymes and a circadian clock control at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels.
Utility of nitrate reductase assay for detection of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a low resource setting Utilidad del ensayo de nitrato reductasa en la detección de Mycobacterium tuberculosis multirresistente en caso de recursos limitados
Marcela López,Claudia álvarez
Biomédica , 2011,
Abstract: Introduction. The performance of a drug susceptibility test may change when moving from the research stage to implementation on a population level in actual public health practice. Objective. The performance of a rapid drug susceptibility test was described for detecting multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis when implemented in the routine workflow of a low-resource reference laboratory. Materials and methods. A prospective study was done comparing the performance of the nitrate reductase assay with the conventional proportion method for rifampicin and isoniazid on 364 isolates were obtained from multidrug-resistant tuberculosis risk patients referred from diffrent Colombian laboratories. Results. When compared with the proportion method, the nitrate reductase assay sensitivity was 86.8% and 84.9% for rifampicin and isoniazid, respectively, whereas nitrate reductase assay specificity was 100% for isoniazid and rifampicin. Nitrate reductase assay sensitivity was significantly higher when the age of isolate was less than 70 days. A sensitivity of 94.4% dropped to 78.1% for rifampicin resistance for fresh and old isolates, respectively (Fisher exact test, p=0.05). For isoniazid resistance using fresh and old isolates, 94.7% vs.74.3% sensitivities, were achieved (chi square test, p=0.03). The proportion of nitrate reductase assay ambiguous results was significantly higher in multidrug-resistant than in non-multidrug-resistant isolates (17.6% vs. 4.0%, chi square test, p<0.005). Conclusions. The nitrate reductase assay demonstrated provided reliable results for antibiotic resistance. However, using old cultures leds to a higher proportion of false sensitive results; furthermore, the nitrate reductase assay capability to detect multidrug-resistant tuberculosis decreased due to a higher proportion of non-interpretable results.

Abstract: in argentina, scorpion poisoning is an entity with high morbidity and mortality mainly produced by tityus trivitatus sting. this species is distributed all around the center and north of the country. clinical manifestations range from local pain and paresthesia to multisystemic failure followed by death. diagnosis is done by recognizing clinical features, and is reinforced by the history of a sting and the identification of the scorpion. specifc treatment is antitoxic serum. we strongly recommend preventive measures to keep scorpions far from building areas. at present, a new species, tityus confluens, arouses in association with lethal events.

Una aproximación al concepto de cultura organizacional
García álvarez,Claudia María;
Universitas Psychologica , 2006,
Abstract: in order to make evident the instrumental nature of the concept of culture applied to organization, this essay develops a comprehension of the concept of organizational culture. this effort is important because the concept of organization itself implies a construction of a social order from meanings becoming hegemonic in the framework of a particular context. organizational psychology, even with its neutrality pretension, is not innocent about the instrumental role that social sciences have had in the organizational arena; however this essay introduces alternatives from critical approaches that allow ways of comprehension and why not, intervention from perspectives explicitly political.
EL HOSPITAL COMO EMPRESA: NUEVAS PRáCTICAS, NUEVOS TRABAJADORES
GARCíA áLVAREZ,CLAUDIA MARíA;
Universitas Psychologica , 2007,
Abstract: this paper is the result of an organizational culture research made in a public hospital, aimed to make an approximation to discourses circulating in a hospital which is in process of transformation towards an “empresa social del estado”. the analysis illustrates how the transformation of hospital into a productive enterprise leads to the displaying of new ways of doing things and new discourses imported from the context -client, registers and administrative control, information management, flexibilization of labor, efficiency- that contribute to the worker’s construction. however, opposing voices against changes embedded in economic logic make evident that the new order is no hegemonic so far.
