Abstract: a metallurgical industry in san luis potosí city, méxico, has contaminated the zone by lead (pb) and arsenic (as). since 1989 were reported by our group high concentrations of pb in blood (pbb) and as in urine (asu) in the local children. in present work, a risk communication program (rcp) was generated to inform the children about the environmental risks of the site where they live, and to change conducts to diminish the exposure to pb and as. we worked with 170 children (5 to 7 years) of the zone. the rcp was applied and the evaluation was realized by means of analysis of drawings, questionnaires and biological monitoring. in drawings of the children appeared toxic elements such as pb, contaminated soil, cigarettes, among others. in the questionnaires applied to the children and family parents it was possible to estimate a change in the knowledge and in some conducts with regard to the pollutants, their effects and their exposure. there was not a decrease in the levels of pbb and in the levels of asu. these were due probably because the principal route of exposure is not only the soil that had been contemplated previously.
Solarization and goat manure on weeds management and melon yield: (with 1figure & 2 tables)

Phyton (Buenos Aires) , 2004,
Abstract: the effect of soil solarization during 30 days and the fertilize with goat manure to the soil at the rate of 0,20 and 40 t ha-1 was studied; the objective of this experiment was to increase soil temperature in order to study its effect on weeds population and on muskmelon yield. solarization produced maximum soil temperatures of 55°c and 44°c at the depth of 1.5 and 10 cm respectively, which in turn clearly reduced the emergence and growth of weeds in solarized plots. goat manure only increased soil temperature by 1.5 to 2.5°c, but it had an apparent antagonist effect on weeds density, however, this effect was not clear on solarized plots. perennial weeds like cyperus esculentus was affected but not eliminated by solarization. the effect of high soil temperatures on weed control was reflected in higher melon yield of solarized treatments, meanwhile, non-solarized plots yield was significantly reduced, reporting 11.83 t ha-1 compared to almost 30 t h-1 of solarized treatments. yield of control plots was significantly increased by goat manure. we concluded that soil solarization combined with organic matter could be a sustainable alternative to methyl bromide fumigation or to the use of herbicides for weed control and for increasing melon yield.

Revista de Salud Animal , 2007,
Abstract: a longitudinal study during one year was followed in order to determine year season effect (dry and rain) and breed on some physico-chemical characteristics and composition of goat milk from alpine french (af) and saanen (s), with the aim of establish criterion to buy goat milk. milk samples were collected from both breeds (af and s), reaching a total of 25 and 27 samples of each breed respectively. milk analysis was carried out by the methods recommended by aoac and fil/idf. af milk showed higher values for protein, total solids (ts) and non-fatty (snf) contents (p < 0.01) as well as for, density, fat and lactose values (p < 0.05). the lowest fat, protein and ts levels were found in both breeds during rainy season. year season variations in ph and ts contents were statistically different (p < 0.01), along with snf (p < 0.05) between goat milk under study. an interaction breed-year season was observed for protein (p<0.01), snf (p<0.01) and ts (p<0.05).
Insurgencia y turismo: reflexiones sobre el impacto del turista politizado en Chiapas
Coronado, Gabriela
PASOS : Revista de Turismo y Patrimonio Cultural , 2008,
Abstract: The paper analyses the interrelations between politics and tourism considering the impact of political instability generated by the Zapatista indigenous rebellion on tourism in Chiapas, Mexico. By analysing tourist products and fieldwork observations the transformation of the tourist industry is explained as an effect of pressures from a new kind of visitor, “political tourists”. Attracted by the indigenous movement and its relevance as a global social movement, their political and ideological position created demands that affected interethnic organisational networks and the social value of tourism activity. As a response indigenous and non indigenous tourist agents generated new strategies for economic recovery, including changes in the organisational networks and marketing symbols and ideologies as “commodities”.

Using the epistolary genre, a letter to my mother, I reflect on my life and identity as an emigrant in Australia by exploring my perceptions of cultural and linguistic difference. Far from my children and grandchildren in Mexico, in this belatedly written letter I recall my memories, nostalgic feelings and expereinces in the new environment, and above all, I speak of my difficulties in mangaing emotionally my fears of being absent in the important moments of the cycle of life, sickness and death.
Discourses of Anti-corruption in Mexico. Culture of Corruption or Corruption of Culture?
Gabriela Coronado
PORTAL : Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies , 2008,
Abstract: In the context of global capitalism the so-called developing countries are considered ‘commodities’ in offer in the global economy as emerging markets or for foreign investment. Countries need to show they are potentially highly competitive with low risk. The value of country characteristics is set by globalised managerial discourses, based on postcolonial ideologies that rate cultures and societies in terms of linear notions of progress and civilisation. Cultures and behaviours are judged positively or negatively according to the position countries supposedly have in the evolution of world society. In this framework one element that countries need to eradicate or reduce in order to be seen as ‘attractive’ is corruption. Towards this aim international and national government and non-government organisations have put in place anti-corruption campaigns. In communications with the general public, these schemes represent actors and acts of corruption through discursive strategies that characterize world cultures and their links with corruption in terms of postcolonial ideologies. In this paper I focus on the implications of the metaphor ‘culture of corruption’ for rating countries, questioning its effectiveness in anti-corruption campaigns. I argue that anti-corruption instruments based on postcolonial ideologies corrupt representations of national cultures and peoples behaviours, instead of targeting local and global sectors that gain from institutionalised corruption. Through the analysis of anti-corruption cultural texts publicly available in Mexico I illustrate how the ideological misrepresentation of corruption fails its stated aim, to transform a ‘culture of corruption’ into a ‘culture of legality’.

The Smell of Memories. A Mexican Migrant’s Search for Emotional Sustainability through Mexican Films.
Gabriela Coronado
PORTAL : Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies , 2011,
Abstract: For more than 10 years living as a Mexican migrant, between two countries (Mexico and Australia), two cities (Mexico City and Sydney), and two social worlds (Mexican and multicultural Australian ‘families-friends’), I have been immersed in a systematic process of self observation and self reflection on my life in my country of destination. During this time I have explored my memories of place and their relationship with my emotional experiences, looking for strategies to continue to be connected with my country of origin and my people. In this process I discovered films were especially significant in sustaining me emotionally. I benefited from the memory associations triggered by representations of Mexico in films produced by Mexicans or by filmmakers from other nationalities. By reflecting on my responses to those films, in this paper I explore how representations of their country of origin can impact on migrants’ emotional life. Using autoethnography, examining my own subjectivity as a way to arrive at a deeper grasp of these processes, I analyse the roles played by different senses in the process of recollection and in the emotional effects produced, which come to embody the experience. My particular focus in this article is the sense of smell triggered by complex interactions within the sensorium while watching films, producing associations and feelings through which I re-live my memories and maintain my emotional sustainability.
La violencia en la sociedad contemporánea
David Coronado
Espacio Abierto , 2007,
