Are there differences in the process of construction of the gender/sex identity between athletes and non-athletes? This research aimed to compare the self-percept and self-quantified gender/sex identity of athletes from different sport modalities (180 men and 180 women) in relation to sedentary participants (22 men and 22 women) regarding to personality and childhood ludic preferences. Men perceived themselves as more masculine and women more feminine. There were more non-heterosexual women than men among the athletes. Men were more likely to enjoy breaking the rules and wanted to be a sports champion when younger. The female athletes who played more with boys in childhood rated themselves as more masculine, daring to transgress the boundaries of gender roles, which may have facilitated their interest

Abstract: objective: in brazil, older adults frequently participate in community groups. however, the influence of this participation on physical activity levels has not been fully investigated. it is known that both regular physical activity and social support are beneficial for health. the aim of this study is to evaluate the association between participation in community groups and physical activity among older adults from florianópolis, brazil. methods: the sample consisted of 1062 adults with a mean age of 71.9 (±7.6) years. among these individuals, 293 subjects participated in community groups and 769 did not. a questionnaire to collect sociodemographic data and the long version of the international physical activity questionnaire were used for the assessment. results: the prevalence of active older adults was 66.6% among participants in community groups and 58.4% among non-participants. participation in these groups was significantly associated with being more physically active in the transportation and domestic domains, but with being less physically active in the leisure-time domain. some changes in these associations were observed when the sample was stratified by age, gender, body mass index, and health status. with respect to total physical activity, participation in community groups was associated with being more physically active in only two strata (subjects younger than 70 years and women). conclusion: the results of this study indicate that older adults who participate in community groups are characterized by a greater probability of being more physically active. however, longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether participation in community groups facilitates the adoption of physically active behavior.

Motricidade , 2011, DOI: 10.6063/motricidade.7(1).116
Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare active and passive joint range of motion in children in relation to gender and age. This study involved 103 children (43 boys and 60 girls) categorized into two groups: G1 (7 to 9 years old) and G2 (10 to 12 years old). The flexitest protocol, active and passive, and the SAPO were used to evaluate joint range of motion. A paired t test was applied to compare active and passive joint range of motion and an independent t test (p < .05) was used to compare active and passive range of motion between gender and age. Results showed that the passive joint ranges of motion of the lower limbs are higher than active motion (p < .001). Girls presented greater passive ankle flexion than boys did (p = .002). Children between 7 and 12 years of age presented similar standards of joint range of motion of low limb. Significant differences were found between passive and active angular range of motion in the hip, knee and ankle. There were no differences between boys and girls in the joint range of motion as well as among age groups.
Sommerhalder, Cinara;
Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722010000200009
Abstract: the unceasing search for meaning to life is part of the existential questioning. viktor frankl is a pioneer in this field. later, researchers have used his lessons to expand the definition of the construct 'meaning of life'. transcultural studies lead to a better understanding of this theme, but further research still needs to be done. the available instruments are being tested and improved; however, we already have relevant information on the theme, and it contributes largely to the study of the development of adulthood and later life. this article aims at showing the evolution of the concept 'meaning of life' and how researches have been dealing with the theme in the field of adulthood and later life development.
