Translation of English and Chinese Addressing Terms from the Cultural Aspect

Abstract: Terms of address are frequently used in social communication to show the identity, rank and relationship between the speaker and the hearer. It is important to have a profound understanding of addressing terms, especially in cross-cultural communication. However, due to the difference in history, religion and culture, terms of address vary in different countries and regions. In this paper, the author discusses the translation of English and Chinese addressing terms from the aspect of cultural background. First, the author defines terms of address and gives the reason why people use terms of address in social communication. Then, the differences between English and Chinese terms of address are analyzed from the point of kinship terms and social terms of address. Last, four translation methods are given according to different situations, namely, literal translation, translating flexibly, specification or generalization and domestication and foreignization.
Cultural Differences on Chinese and English Idioms of Diet and the Translation

Abstract: Idioms is a special culture which is shaped in the daily lives of the local people, particularly the idioms of diet has a close relation with various elements, such as the eating custom , history, fairy tales, geographic situations. Also, different ways of translation on different diet idioms in English and Chinese will be analyzed in this article. As a result, it will be very important to know the great culture contents in the idioms of diet in order to do a better job in the research of cross-culture communication and the translation.
Up-regulated oncoprotein P28GANK correlates with proliferation and poor prognosis of human glioma

Abstract: Background The significance of p28GANK in gliomas remains unknown. This study aims to clarify the clinical significance of p28GANK in human gliomas. Methods The expression of p28GANK in 138 gliomas and 50 matched para-cancerous tissues was detected by immunohistochemical staining, and statistical analyses were performed to test the correlation of p28GANK with clinical parameters. To investigate the effects of p28GANK down-regulation on the growth of cells both in vitro and in vivo, an siRNA targeting p28GANK was transfected into U251 cells. Results P28GANK expression was significantly higher in tumor specimens than in matched para-cancerous tissues. Over-expressed p28GANK significantly correlated with high karnofsky performance score (KPS), advanced WHO grade and poor overall survival of the patients. Univariate analysis showed that WHO grade and KPS also correlated with the survival of patients, and multivariate analysis suggested that KPS and p28GANK expression were two independent prognostic factors. Moreover, p28GANK gene silencing decreased the malignant growth of U251 cells both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions Increased expression of p28GANK is correlated with poor clinical outcomes in glioma patients. The down-regulation of p28GANK significantly inhibited cell proliferation, indicating that p28GANK might be a potential therapeutic target for glioma treatment.
Investigation on the Competition Interaction of Synthetic Food Colorants and Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride with Bovine Serum Albumin by Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Abstract: The effects of synthetic food colorants like tartrazine (TTZ), sunset yellow (SY), and erythrosine (ETS) on the binding reaction between ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CPFX) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy in the aqueous solution of pH = 7.40. Results showed that CPFX caused the fluorescence quenching of BSA through a static quenching procedure and the primary binding site was located at subdomain IIA of BSA (site I). According to the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it confirmed that CPFX bound to BSA by electrostatic interaction. In addition, the colorants affected the formation of BSA-CPFX complex. This resulted in an increase of the free, biological active fraction of CPFX. The binding distance of BSA-CPFX systems was evaluated according to Förster's theory. Results suggested that the binding distance were increased in the presence of synthetic food colorants.

Abstract: Adsorption of 4-(4-nitrophenylazo)-l-naphthol (NPAN), an azobenzene derivative, on Au(111) has been investigated in aqueous HC1O4 solution by using the cyclic voltammetry and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The molecule is found to form a stable monolayer on the electrode with a (6×4) structure relative to the underlying Au(111) lattice. Cyclic voltammograms show that the redox reactions occurring on the electrode are retarded by the formation of the monolayer. A structural model is proposed for the two-dimensional adlayer.

GGE Biplot as a novel tool for the investigation of marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) seedling growth on composted corn stalk as a substrate

Abstract: This project investigated the feasibility of using ground corn stalks as the substrate to cultivate marigold (Tagetes erecta L.). Five treatments including peat moss, composted corn stalks and freshly ground corn stalks were tested for their effects on marigold seedling growth. Seedling quality was described by several morphological and physiological parameters. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and GGE biplot analysis. There were significant differences among the treatments for several growth parameters, such as seedling biomass, root biomass, stem diameter, leaf area, seedling vigor, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, root activity, stomatal conductance, and intercellular CO2 concentration. Treatment T3, which contained composted ground corn stalks, had the best effect on marigold seedling growth. The results showed that corn stalk was a good substrate for marigold seedlings. GGE biplot demonstrated the substrate effects on marigold seedling quality, and graphically displayed the interrelationships among morphological and physiological parameters. T3 treatment was the best because four morphological parameters, including seedling biomass, roots biomass, stem diameter and seedling vigor, along with six physiological parameters fall into this sector. These results were consistent with the results analyzed by Statistical Analysis Software. For morphological parameters, the correlations are complicated. For physiological parameters, they were all positively correlated between each of two parameters.

Introduction When drugs are absorbed, they enter the circulatory system and bind to serum albumin extensively and reversibly [1]. The effectiveness of drugs depends on their combination abilities. Binding of drugs to serum albumin has significance in pharmacology, since it controls their free concentrations and, as a consequence to the degree and time of action in the body, affects duration and intensity of their effects [2–4]. In other words, binding to serum albumin will significantly affect the distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs. Drugs are subjected to the influences of many factors in vivo, among which dietary habits cannot be ignored. Interactions between diet and drugs reflect the change of pharmacodynamics and the incompatibilities. There are various researches about the influences of sugar, wine, and tea on the efficacy of a medicine [5, 6]. However, researches about the effects of synthetic food colorants on medication have not been reported. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CPFX, the structure is shown in Figure 1) which belongs to the third-generation synthetics of quinolones shows striking potency against enteric Gram-negative bacilli, lesser activity against nonenteric Gram-negative bacilli and staphylococci, and generally marginal activity against streptococci and anaerobes [7, 8]. Energy efficient prediction clustering algorithm for multilevel heterogeneous wireless sensor networks

Abstract: In designing wireless sensor networks, it is important to reduce energy dissipation and prolong network lifetime. In this paper, a new model with energy and monitored objects heterogeneity is proposed for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. We put forward an energy-efficient prediction clustering algorithm, which is adaptive to the heterogeneous model. This algorithm enables the nodes to select the cluster head according to factors such as energy and communication cost, thus the nodes with higher residual energy have higher probability to become a cluster head than those with lower residual energy, so that the network energy can be dissipated uniformly. In order to reduce energy consumption when broadcasting in clustering phase and prolong network lifetime, an energy consumption prediction model is established for regular data acquisition nodes. Simulation results show that compared with current clustering algorithms, this algorithm can achieve longer sensor network lifetime, higher energy efficiency and superior network monitoring quality.
